Owning my own business, I often have trouble getting to sleep. To help dozing off I imagine I have won the lottery (currently here in Illinois @ 64 Million wretched American Dollars).
I imagine that I would buy a membership in the local upper class private sportscar track and then begin to fill up my garage....

Since it is almost impossible to purchase the real thing, I would buy replicas of famous racing cars. Here is my shopping list:

1) The new Scarab clone being built now a days. 1958 front engined American sportscar. Silky smoothe. The last of the really big bore front engined sportscars. And drop dead georgious!
2) The replica Corvette Grand Sport. Brutal. Perhaps undeveloped because Chevrolet pulled out of racing about the time it reached the track. A real Cobra killer if it had been allowed to continue.
3) Herb Thomas's Cheetah. The quintessential hotrod front engined (maybe MID engined) sportscar. Wicked fast. Brutal. Would have given the Grand Sport and Cobra a run for the money if Chevy haddn't pulled out!
4) Jim Hall's Chaparral 2E. Still built. The first of the big aerodynamic wing cars. Precursor to the Can Am cars. Elegant!, with style!

All today built pretty bullit proof for old ham fisted (and footed ) guys like me.

Give me those and I wouldn't bother the wife anymore....

What would YOU buy if YOU won the lotto?

Perhaps straying a bit from the intentions of your post...

I'm unemployed and I often have trouble getting to sleep. To help fall asleep, I also imagine I've won the lottery (don't know what it is here in Indiana, but if it's $64 million, I wouldn't much care if they're "wretched" American Dollars or not).

I'd build a house out in the middle of nowhere, next to some busy railroad tracks and build a nice kart track on the property. I'd do it up right. It would have "karting-scale" corners like Eau Rouge and other famous corners I've heard about over the years. I'd put in all the neat timing systems I could. Then blast around having fun. If I get tired of that, I'd go up to the house and watch trains and play around with my elaborate HO scale model railroad...

:)

Well I came damn close to winning it in Indiana 2) weeks ago. Hit 4) of the 6) numbers. Missed the other two by one digit each. Won $52.00. Not quite the same cache' as "millionaire." If I'd win, my whole family & my friends win too. Try to pay my parents back for all the things that they sacrificed over the years to help make the awesome life that my brother & I have had. Take care of sending the nephews off to college to ease that burden on my brother & his wife. Enough to each of my dearest friends to make us forget the daily financial trappings of life. If it was a "big one", like the 64 million mentioned above, I like the idea of the private track club. A new Ferrari California, and a couple of vintage IndyCars, probably should get a vintage F1 car or two in there also. Then try not to take myself out by driving them all too fast! It would certainly be nice. I'm glad I've got family & friends that far outweigh any dollar sign though. That is the greatest wealth of all.

I wouldn't mind what I bought, as long as it's eligable for, and reasonably competitive at, Goodwood.
Certainly have an XKSS on my road car shopping list though.

I would try to get the following:

1) Ferrari 250GT SWB
2) Porsche 908
3) Bugatti T57
4) Chevron B19
5) F5000 - first choice Chevron B24 second choice Surtees TS5
6) BRM P153 or P160

Of course they would have to be the genuine article not a "continuation model".

build a nice house in a nice spot with a big room where i can put 2 of those in.
I'd get my favourite car in the best possible condition which is this one and maybe something like this
...and aah of course, how could i forget that one which leads to this (i'd buy the backdrop too in that case)
ummm..let's see...maybe a few of those ,just in case something goes wrong with one of the others.
aah..and i'd never work for anybody else again....
off to bed...
cheers marty

I like your tagline (world's deadliest joke, from Python? Can't translate it though... : ) but not necessarily your choice of cars

I'd rather drive the real cars than a simulator......just don't get the 'seat-of-the-pants' feedback the same unless you're in the real thing.

I think I'd get these nice people to build me one of these with a new BRM V8 from H&H.

Then I'd have a nice motorhome with trailer and take it round all the surviving great circuits in the world......

Would have to be a Miller 122...

Then, a McLaren/Ford M23 parked next to it, perhaps a Mercedes 35PS for Sundays, and something glitzy for special occasions, let's see... a Fiat 806/406, or a nice Meskowski/Offenhauser Champ Car (Foyt's 1963 Sheraton Thompson #2)? :cat::cat:

I'd want one of the cars that I drooled over in my childhood while reading exotic American (car) magazines. So it would be a genuine Corvette Grand Sport, or a Chaparral (any, but don't you think a 2J would put a few noses out of joint in historic racing?), or a proper Le Mans Ford GT40 or MkIV. If I find I'm disappointed by any of them I'll sell it and buy something boring, like a Ferrari 330P4. I wish.

GT40 in Gulf colours
Chevron B16
RS1800 works replica Escort

That would be a nice starting point, then I could enjoy two loves, cars and travel

oops..almost forgot a Lotus Type 26R

If I had millions...

I'd try to coax Gordy out of retirement to do a one-off at a short track somewhere...

And I would start my own race team and hire a couple of my NorCal sprint car driver friends. :D

I would also be able to build my own dirt oval in the area, that'd be way too fun.

I'm not sure if it's enough to fulfill my pipe dream of rebuilding an exact replica of Riverside, Turn 9 and all... :stoned:

While there certainly are some tempting trinkets noted here, the last two sentences in Brian's reply (post #3) pretty much sum it up for me.

I'd probably give most, if not all, of it to family/friends/church. My 92yo mother is fond of saying, "The best things in life are not things." The older I get, the more I believe the truth of that.

I wouldn't fancy buying anything I couldn't drive confidently. So... GT40's and 917's are out. I'd love a 2 litre sportscar (Lola, Chevron or Osella - I'm not fussy), a BT28 in full 1 Litre F3 spec, a Lotus Elite (or 26R - it would be a waste to own both) and a 1982ish F3 Anson.

I'd buy 40 or so acres near Glendale, Utah, and build a 1000 sf cabin with a geothermal heat pump, a well, extensive solar panels and a generator for when that wasn't enough. I'd have a separate garage, also heated, and a paved driveway. I'd keep the Beemer for riding distances, and add a 4 wheeler ATV for messing around on the property, and a Ducati 1148 for messing around on the roads of southwestern Utah.

I'd also buy about a 40 foot sailboat well equipped for living aboard, and keep it somewhere on the west coast, say San Diego.

I'd ride the roads in the Summer and the waves in the Winter, and would continue to enjoy cars from a distance.

I'd structure the money so that no one would ever have to take care of me (financially at least), make sure I couldn't blow it all too quickly, and properly dispense out the remainder to my kids and a couple of favorite charities.

Of course I've never played the lottery in my life, and don't anticipate doing so in the future. I figure I'll get the Utah property and maybe even the sailboat, but that's another 10 or 15 years away.

The very first thing I would do is give cousin Peter enough money to get the car rebuilt to a running condition, then wait to see if we could get it entered for the Monaco Historique in 2010.

I'd give a substantial donation to Les amis du circuit de gueux to enable them to complete the renovation of the stands and pit /paddock buildings at Reims, followed by digging up one side of the dual carriageway that now forms the old RN31, reinstating Thillois corner and the section from Bretelle Nord to Muizon then subsidising the first few years of racing which would feature a revived 12 hours race. The profit :D from those activities would be used to begin similar projects at Rouen, Cadours, Montauban etc.

I'd also put money into a cure for flu since it was my daughters first birthday yesterday ( 14th Nov ) and she suffered really badly :(

Well,if I am driving- slow ,fat,old,- that removes F1 cars and the more extreme sports cars so...Ferrari 330LMB; Ferrari 206SP; Lola T70 (and yes I am sure I would struggle) and a little slicks and wings single seater - a BT 30 with an FVA would be just fine. A Type 35 Bugatti would be fun too. And for the road - 911; BMW 330d; a small 4x4 and I shall keep my current R400 Caterham.

It would have to some the iconic cars from the 69 Le Mans I attended
Daytona Cobra Coupe
Alfa GTZ mk1
and a GT40
and a Lotus 23
Of course , I don't really have to wait as I have notification of wins of hundreds of thousands in my email every day , not counting the multiple good people whose whole family has perished in car/plane crash/revolution and are just waiting to share their multi million pound windfalls tied up in some African bank.

First thing would be to buy a new house for Mrs B with all the things she wants. This will help me to buy the things I want. Next, set up trust funds for the kids and college funds. Then a charity. Now my turn...
Set up a full shop with all the bells and whistles. Inside the shop will be a 250 GTO, Lola 332, modern F1 car, Porsche cup car, and my daily drivers Porshce and McLaren.
Oops, I think I went over budget already.......
I'll hope to win another lottery.....

Ah, it's fun to dream this dream. My wife and I play through it now and then.

As for me I think I would collect some Coopers - lowline, bobtail, 500, monaco. I'd also probably make the first call to try and talk the current owner of the McKee MK4 into letting me be its caretaker. One of the king cobras would definitely be on my short list.

I also understand the thread starter's desire for replicas. I'd also like to have a crop of historically accurate replicas that I can play with and potentialy prang without destroying a historically significant original. I'd get a leaf sprung small block cobra, a daytona coupe and a GT-40, and drive the snot out of them :)

These and a well equipped shop to tinker and I'd be set I think.

For me. Cisitalia 202 coupe.
Ferrari 166/212 coupe by Touring. Oh yeah I'd take a Barchetta if no coupes available.
Early Gordini monoposto.

Then would come, wine, women and song. I would then squander the rest!
