Agreed, Richard has a fantastic selection, but if I won a roll-over, just where would I stop? I would have most Lotus,Lola, Ferrari and McLarens and would have more cars than Nick mason, what a dream!

Trouble posting in this thread, it starts you dreaming!

As I don't even do the lottery and cannot seem to win even £50 on the premium bonds, its not too likely !!

Funny that Richard, I have a batch of premium Bonds and have never won, although I know of three friends that have won in the last few weeks!

.............sets sights much lower to an affordable (and humble!) MK 11 1600GT Cortina :

Since I didn't earn it or do anything to deserve it, give it all away to my church and to charities or other non-profits such as the IMRRC. Such money, judging from the oft-told tales of greed gone amuck on the part of the "winners," is more trouble than it is worth, so it seems best to put it where it can do some actual good rather than allow someone to wallow in dreams of greed and selfishness.

That's my problem too--you can't win if you don't enter.

That said, I love the idea of buying a vintage race car and joining the historic racing circus. I'd love to have a Lola T70 Can-Am car.

And a continuation Chaparral 2E, or course. ;)

True enough, but still, since I have some expertise in managing a very small fortune, it might be fun for a change to, as the saying goes, obtain one by starting with a larger one than by the slow accretion method I've been employing.

Spoken like a man who already has a bit o' money...

... but you're right to a great extent; one could make a lot of people comfortable, and help a lot of pals, with that sort of money.

But it wouldn't be TOO big a sin, would it, just to keep a little of it for oneself, would it? Just enough for just one, teeny-weeny Bobtail Cooper?

Here in the USA we get to play the Lotto. Several states combine into one big whopper. Some people who really do not have any money will buy $500, $1000 worth of tickets when the pot gets big....
Me... I figger that the only way I'm going to win the lotto is if God wants me to. And if God wants me to win........ I only need one ticket.............

P S I'd rather HAVE a replicar to thrash around vs. the real thing that I could STILL never afford.

I almost won the $300 million Super Lotto, once. Well, I almost bought a ticket.

Had I and had I, I'd quarter it:

· 75 mil to Carroll Shelby's fix-the-kids charity

· 75 mil to the near and extended family members so they wouldn't miss me so much

· 75 mil to Bernie and Co. so I could snigger up my sleeve at the rest of y'all who value F1 way too much

· 75 mil to buy up all the ugly Lotus road cars, crush them, and populate the world's highways and byways with early Elans using modern mechanicals ...

Wait! Mazda's already done that. Full stop after " ... crush them".

Well, then, my work here is done.

After taking care of my immediate family and my church, I would turn my sights on improving the racing scene in one or more ways.

1) Currently the fastest amateur racing class in the US is D sports Racer, and the fastest car is the latest Stohr. I would comission Lee to have a couple dozen or more identical cars built and then create a new IROC meets ROC series to be run in the winter months. Something to put the various discipline drivers head to head.

2) Find a nice, appropriate mountainside to build a proper Hillclimb course. Include plenty of area for spectating and paddocking. Host a US Style FoS.

3) run 1) on 2) for a "King of the Hill" event.

First, I would beg on my knees asking a Floridian car collector to sell me his Mercedes GP car for a first :D
Seriously. If not, I would build a replica of it. Even if yes, I would still build a replica of the car to learn the technics to drive the hell out of those kind of "beasts."
Next, I would buy all the Gordinis coming for sale.
Add to this a Veritas RS, a couple of Brookland specials. Also a nice Lagonda, an ERA, a Bugatti.
I would have then my own museum with its own race tracks to demonstrate cars to the public. Asphalt, dirt, off road, etc.
Finally, I would have a couple of rent-a-drive race cars because I would be already ruined.
Oh and I would buy that old garage in Brussels, used by Siemens now as a car park.

Figure you would need to win lottery twice to get Mr Collier to part with Merc but what about the original 917 in there!

I would buy Oulton Park and return it to its 1972 state.

There would be just three meetings a season; the Gold Cup for in-period Formula 1 and Formula 5000 cars (by invitation only), the Tourist Trophy - again for sportscars from 1972 and prior - and an historic "club" meeting (for Formula 3, Group 2 saloons, modsports, special saloons, etc.)

Spectator admission fees would be a fiver a day and all profits would be ploughed back into the company to preserve the circuit in its absolute magnificence.

I would envisage attendance figures in the region of 60-70,000...

There's no point in me buying any racing cars, I wouldn't be able to drive them at anything like their true potential, and if I even tried I'd scare the brown stuff out of myself. Having said that, I'd like a Brabham BT30 and Chevron B16 to look at, and to sit in and dream. And I suppose I could emply someone who knew what he was doing to race them, but again I'd be panicking in case he bent it. Even with money no object, I'd still be worrying.

I'd treat my self to a Gordon Keeble for the road, and a Honda CB400/4. Now those I just can't resist.

On a different tangent, American NASCAR driver Jay Sommers funded his entry into racing after winning $5.8 million dollars in the Michigan State Lotto in 1988. Unfortunately the story had a sad ending:

Ciao to all,
with 64 millions of dollars,
I will buy every vote, I will corrupt anyone,
I will cheat on everything in order to became: President of FISA,
and run the motor racing sport, with the right rules.
That would be enough to me.

My best regards,

With $64,000,000 my first automotive priority without doubt would be to see the Connew up and running, and as has already been suggested at Monaco, where I believe the original optimistic plan was for the car to run in 1971.

25% to charity
25% to my family

Then I'd buy this and rent it out to race teams, auto clubs and OEM as a "job". I'd then keep one of the garages for personal use and I'd have a Kremer 935 in it for after hours activities at the track.
