Drivers generally liked Barber, but some changes necessary for racing.

He'll have to be a championship contender to guarantee himself.

Takuma SatoTakuma Sato is working on a drive in the IndyCar Series, reports this week's AUTOSPORT.

The 32-year-old lost out on a Scuderia Toro Rosso drive to Sebastien Bourdais this season and is now looking to a potential IndyCar deal which would include his home race at Motegi in September.

Sato was in Japan last week to film a television ad, and his commercial manager Matthew Winter attended a press event to launch the Motegi race and admitted that "we need Honda's help - that's what I'm here to ask for."

"It's a long way from happening yet," Winter told AUTOSPORT. "But if Taku could do Motegi that would be great. If he could do more IndyCar races that would be even better.

"He still wants to get back into F1 for 2010 and that means he wants to keep his hand in by racing this year."

AUTOSPORT understands that Sato would want to make his oval debut before Motegi.

Good for RHR! Maybe he can help Vision raise its game on road courses too.

After seeing the new F1 cars the IRL chassis don't look so bad anylonger.

Uglyness - we have a new winner!

Makes one thankful for ALMS, after seeing the new F1 cars, the COT, and, of course, the Daytona Prototypes. The 21st century is evidently not going to be known for elegant race car designs. :(

A friend of mine in Michigan just sent this to me. Thought I would share:

http://www.racecar-e...e-revealed.html

Is there anyone else out there that has any interest in the first race of the season? I know we have Formula 1 back in a big way (no complaints), however I'm surprised that no one has mentioned if they give a d***, let alone they might be attending. Myself included. The thing that I notice is that even the Indy Star has hardly printed a word in this week leading up to St. Petersburg. Anyone seeing any promotion of this event in any of your respective markets? Thanks for sharing what you can.

I hope that maybe my second part makes a bit of sense.
I'm going to go disappear for a while now so you can make proper fun of me.

I wouldn't mind a W16 engine but it's definitely a hoax.

I like this calendar... looks more like a classic Indy calendar. Nice mix of ovals, circuits and streets. And now that F1 made their cars ugly as hell, these don't look that bad anymore.

I'm sad Mexico didn't make the cut for the second year in a row, though :(

I was watching Top Gear on BBC America on Monday and there was an ad from Versus for the St. Pete race (and the entire season). I thought it was good ad placement, given the audience.

According to a press release from TB Communications, a press conference has been scheduled for Monday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a "NASCAR team owner" to announce an entry into the 93rd running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 24.

The release said the team owner will be making his debut as a car owner in the Indy 500.

Tony Stewart is my guess.

No chance surely, I don't think Chevrolet and his sponsors will let him miss Charlotte.

I reckon it will be someone "oh, is that it" like John Andretti.

I suspect the same. Stewart has said he would love to race at Indy but wants a chance to win, not just drive. I doubt he'd go for a one-off drive. And particularly since his team is doing well and he has a chance to make the Chase.

JA with RPM is not dazzling, but better than what I saw on another board: Stanton Barrett--who is running at St. Pete, a mere 4 seconds behind the next-slowest car.

Jimmy Spencer tested a Champ Car in the late 90s. If he can fit in one then Smoke will have room to spare ;)

I read 'car owner' and 'entry', not driver, thus my guess of Tony Stewart.

Any news on Milka at NHL?

Just the thought of Milka at NHL makes me shiver. It'd be like putting Shigeaki Hattori in a Penske.

He did not test... It was a bet with Chip "Buffet" Ganassi in which he lost so he had to squeeze into Ganassi's CART car.

To paraphrase the esteemed Ross Stonefleld , too bad Chris Farley didn't live to star in "Talladega Nights II-The Jimmy Spencer Story"

Actually Hattori did 180 from CART to Indycar. He became a capable driver and hardly made a mistake driving for Bradley Motorsports.

Ah, we didn't get IRL coverage in the UK at that point so I only ever saw him in CART. Could this be down to the level of competition at the time?

What did I tell you guys?

Wilson put Dale Coyne on P2.

See? I knew he could do it!

Congrats to Graham as well. Pole for tomorrow. Amazing considering he brushed the wall pretty good.

No Penske or Ganassi or AGR on front row! Should be an exciting one tomorrow on that alone!

Poor qually from Power. It seems he had the fastest time overall by a few hundreths from Franchitti, but did not do well with the strategy in this multi-part qualifying. :|

Before Penske, AGR, Ganassi, Mo Nunn, and Rahal showed up. Believe or not the racing balls to the wall at the time.
