Not sure if this is old news, but Google is now hosting the Life Magazine Photo Archives....The racing photo's are fairly few and far between, but there are some real gems that are certainly new to me at least...

For instance:
Fangio

Anyway, check it out if you haven't already...

Very interesting. Some really lovely shots. There seem to be about 200 images if you search for "Auto Racing". There is one taken in 1969 of a Can Am car, #?4, with the rear end on fire. Who and what is that, when, and where?

There are some truly fascinating pictures there. I found this nice one of Bruce McLaren .

I got quite a few results by typing "racing car" into the search box.

Some Sprint Car ;) pics, too:

http://images.google...02bcb158c8da395

The "Ed Lowther Offy", a former Sam Traylor car and originally the 1951 Caccia/Offy, seen here late fifties, possibly early sixties. Driver could be Van Johnson, Jud Larson, Cotton Farmer, or even A. J. Foyt...

http://images.google...3829dd5a7bcc1b9

Another former Sam Traylor car, the 1951 Beal/Offy leading from the 1956 Schmidt/Offy - with the latter carrying #8, this has to be a 1960 shot, meaning the Beal is now owned by Doug Stearly and probably driven by Johnny Thomson in one of his last races, and the Schmidt is now campaigned by its chief mechanic, Wally Meskowski, and probably driven by Eddie Sachs.

http://images.google...d822099127e3407

This is the Beletsky Offy, and I can't be sure but I believe it is, by coincidence, the third former Sam Traylor Offy! originally the 1954 Sweigart/Offenhauser, driver now (1960?) would probably be Jiggs Peters.

http://images.google...06c7aa07ec953f3

The Gehlhausen Offy, originally I believe the 1957 Dillon/Offenhauser, wearing a temporary #51 which means it's 1960 again. Driver Jim Packard?

http://images.google...a823d4f9f8f2c7b

Ernie Ruiz Offy in 1960, driver I can only guess: Chuck Hulse? Lowther Offy in background.

http://images.google...9f3c6247d832129

Well, I'm pretty sure the track is Langhorne, and all Sprint Car pictures probably from the same meeting.

http://images.google...e7a6afb271961a9

 The "short" version of the Doug Stearly Offy...

http://images.google...05ffe11d8ac1907

Another strange :drunk: pic! Al Herman leading in the Caruso/Offy #31, next car I don't recognise, then #78 the Fray/Offy, #19 the J. J. Smith car which I still have as an Offy in 1960, but obviously a Chevy here, and the Stearly Offy again.

http://images.google...f7a1603b48d689d

That's the former Hinnershitz Hillegass/Offenhauser, now owned by Herb Swan, I believe, and that could be Bobby Marshman driving?

http://images.google...9bf50eae5371c4d

A. J. to the power of two equals victory*: Foyt in the Watson/Offy #2, outside Don Branson Estes/Offy #1, then Sachs Meskowski/Offy #8, Elmer George HOW/Offy #21, Jiggs Peters Beletsky/Offy #3 and... don't know :

http://images.google...6df73a5b4392381

Branson, Jim Hurtubise (Barnett/Chevy #56) and Sachs.

http://images.google...4073a90c1f2fe5d

George, Joe Barzda (Barzda/Chevy #33) and Jim Hemmings (Iddings/Chevy #93).

* A. J. Foyt was the overall winner of this Langhorne 100-mile race (April 24 in 1960) in two heats, Eddie Sachs was second and Don Branson third, then either Jiggs Peters or Jim Hurtubise fourth.

An Indy/Champ Car and a Midget: the former is the 1939 Moore/Offenhauser, now (1947) owned by Fred Peters. The Midget is obviously a tube-frame Kurtis-Kraft job, I wonder is that Fred Peters? Did he also own a Midget?

Some interesting stuff, thanks. There's an unusual one of Moss with a beard - a bit Bonnier-like - and they also suggest in one caption that Fangio was a Mexican racing driver, which might upset Argentina.

My thanks to Wildman and GTB-4 for the link to Joan Galloway driving the Lotus at Santa Barbara. My brother Alan bought that car the following year. Unfortunately, all the photos I had of it racing were destroyed in the 1993 Laguna Beach, CA fire. It's nice to have these. Does anyone have a link to the actual issue that these photos ran in?

There is also a thumbnail on that webpage of a Corvette at Santa Barbara. I emailed Art Evans and he too thought it could well be Ginny Simms.
