AFAIK John Lewis retired it after the Bobby Unser Pirelli experience-can't remember who paid for the damge- and still has the car.

I seem to remember piecing this together after I was told that the car I had seen Mac racing at Silverstone was "definately" the ex-Protheroe car but it clearly wasn't either of the CUT 7s associated with him.
Or am I dreaming?

I remember it as being a dark blue roadster, that was very successful in historic raing in the early/mid 80s.That Bobby Unser ran it in a Pirelli rally.Seems a pity its not at the Goodwood style meetings.I'm probably wrong but wasn't the E type that Roger Mac raced in the '80's the second CUT7? After Protheroe crashed it in testing before racing it he was offered the lowdrag coupe so he sold this one on to Lewis who entered it for the then teenage Mac. They later replaced it with the ex. Atkins/Salvadori Lightweight but John Lewis either kept the original car or reaquired it for Mac to race in the '80's.

"Déjà vu on DJU – The Blue Jaguar E-type registered 256 DJU is known today for Roger Mac’s European Historic Sports/GT racing exploits. But race goers 20 years ago have seen it all before for Mac first made his name in the very same car. Andrew Whyte relates its incredible history during the intervening years, and Willie Green takes it onto the track"

Thanks for the info. Amazing what appears in the back of the mind when prompted, but then if it refers to racing E types I'm always interested.
A little off topic but are the present whereabouts of the 1962 Lumsden/Sargent "Coupe" known? I saw a car which I thought may have been this through the dusty window of a car dealer somewhere round the back of Charing Cross Station way back in 1969/70. A couple of years ago I had the priveledge of speaking to Peter Sargent and he said he had seen it for sale himself around that time somewhere in London.
One of those "if only I hadn't been in a hurry" moments.

If my memory serves and I had a quick book check, do you mean 49 FXN (chassis S850663) of Peter Lumsden and Peter Sargent?A little off topic but are the present whereabouts of the 1962 Lumsden/Sargent "Coupe" known? If so, then it was certainly well at Goodwood four days ago! This is the only photo of it I took that day though I may have others ...

I think that's '898 BYR' but I don't believe I have any current photos or info. I know a man that likely will if you can wait a couple of days though ...That looks like the Lightweight Coupe fom 1963/4 which now appears regularly. Don't have reference material to hand but I meant the car that finished 5th. at Le Mans in 1962.
Lovely picture by the way.
There's a photo of it at the top of p261 of Andrew's Jaguar Sports Cars... He mentions it was surviving ca 1975.

Nigel Mansell also raced it a few times in 80/1.
No, he practised it once at Silverstone and the brakes failed. It was damaged such that he did not race it.

Dammit, I'm supposed to be doing my VAT return and now I've spent all morning on E Types! A quick google search has brought up chassis no. S850009.
Edited to add, quick search on the DVLA site 898 BYR is currently taxed.
And belongs surely to Allen Lloyd.

How far removed is from todays E-types racing in Historics, would it be up the pointed end of the field? In earlier days it was raced by John Scott-Davies,and later by David Cottingham.

Yes, I don't think anyone is disputing that?Excuse to introduce amongst connoisseurs, but I'm pretty sure (from research...) 898BYR and 49FXN are different cars, the first one beeing a standard (steel) roadster adapted as a coupe lookalike (LM 62 and other races, s850009); and 49FXN a Lightweight (S850663) rebodied as a lowdrag coupe. Both from Peter Lumsden/Peter Sargent. Could I be right?

After your remark and upon reading the thread with more attention, you've really made the distinction (898BYR Vs 49FXN). Sorry, my mistake.
