A Chev big block with auto?

You'd have been just the man to handle that rig at speed, KB! I've seen you at work!

Camera mounted on car by Wally Willmott in the day

Wally will now explain this picture:
Somewhere in Hong Kong a Clint Eastwood lookalike fires a fake rocket. You quickly come to the realisation in the film industry that nothing that you see should be taken for real.

Using skills I had learnt in those days at McLaren, I put together a kit of bits that would allow me to quickly position a Camera where ever the director wanted it, and was lucky enough to get some amazing jobs.

Side mount made by Wally
Wally will explain these mounts now:
" Didn’t have to be ‘pretty’, just had to be created as quick as possible and strong enough to carry an often valuable camera at high speeds."

Jay Esterer getting ready to take the McBegg out for practice with Wally Willmott helping
This comes from Wally:
The motor ran well and strong, and everything else works fine. We have been making alterations each session trying to get rid of some ‘snap’ over steer it has. Work in progress at the moment.

Wally Willmott and Bruce McLaren and Eoin Young in 1962.
This is the start of McLaren Racing. Patty McLaren was also part of this team.

Does anyone know where in Perth this was taken?
Could this place be what later became a Bob Jane station?

Wally Willmott finally getting a chance to drive the McBegg
Posted Image
Wally in the pits waiting for his run.

Here are Wally's thoughts on getting to drive the McBegg on a demonstration run:
The ‘Demonstration Laps’ at the Speedfest meeting were a good chance to get a feel for the car after having spent many weeks with Jay Esterer fine tuning and fettling the thing.

Bearing in mind that the organisers would not have been best pleased if I had let it get out of control, and the right foot of a 71 year and 11 month old Wildman had to cool it as I was Very keen to see my 72nd birthday.

Given that the thing has more power at your disposal at any given point in time than tire traction can handle, it is quite docile now, and most of the rough edges are gone. Masses of torque mean that you really only need 3rd and 4th gear for a very fast lap of Teretonga, and with the steering, gearshift, and brakes all working very well it is no longer as frightening as it was on those first few drives that I had in it – in fact after 4 laps I was starting to really like it to the point that I could have had the organisers on the edge of their seats and reaching for the red light button – so I made it back to the pits and parked it, much chuffed.
