Many thanks to all of you who attended yesterday.

Mike Wilds talked for 2 hrs about his career as a professional racing driver. It was highly entertaining, delivered with great modesty bearing in mind some 53 years of completion and massive amounts of success and race wins in just about any category you could think of.

My thanks as always to Jane, Bill and the catering staff and to Christine & Geoff  who keep the show on the road.

Those of you who did not attend missed a very  interesting talk on both the past and present motor racing scene. Put 27th April in your diaries for our next event .

This was yet another great day out. Mike's recollections and anecdotes about his more than half a century in motorsport were both poignant and fascinating, the films were interesting, informative and entertaining and the food was (as ever) superb. Add to that the pleasure of spending time with friends old and new and it becomes obvious why these events are always fixed in my diary. Congratulations and thanks are due to all those concerned in organising and running the day.

Thank you Richard and the team for organizing another excellent show. Mike obviously loves motor sport and his story was extremely well told with splendid candour. How the Goodwood organization can refuse his entry on the grounds of not being high profile enough is beyond me and the rest of us who attended.

I'm very sorry I couldn't join you, as a last-moment work project got in the way.  I had been looking forward to hearing Mike talk.

A lovely day, listening to Mike, wonderful stuff. I was probably at Brands watching him race his DRW all those years ago, a lifetime watching Mike race. So modest, and such a story to tell. Thanks to Richard and the “A “ team for all the hard work, preparation and super catering, appreciated.

Ouch - I got 81, in the 'long' quiz  (although I might dispute one of the answers given...).

(I was not able to download all the parts of the other quizzes, so could not attempt those.)

Tony-Ambrose-2-2.jpg

We have some very clever people in our audience at the film show - several of which have written books.

Philip Ambrose who many of you will have met, described to our gathering in April how he had discovered his late Uncle Tony's hand written autobiography and spent more than a year typing it out collecting extra material and photographs.

Well this week it has been published by Veloce and tells the story of a larger than life figure who became a works BMC Co-driver and sat alongside many great drivers including Rauno Altonen and Timo Makinen in both Austin Healey 3000 and Minis.

A lovely book £14.99 168 pages, nicely readable font , small enough to fit in a big coat pocket with colour and B&W photos. It tells the whole story and atmospheric account of the 1950s and 60s in a works Rally team.

Many well known figures in the world rally world have helped.

Always nice to give some a member of our group a bit of exposure. If you are interested in buying a copy why not drop an email to Philip. I am sure he will be pleased to hear from you. philip@theambroses.co.uk

Our next film show and talk day features a racing driver of over 300 races in Minis, Capris, F5000 and Le Mans, racing car constructor of the Spice Group C cars and car accessory business magnate Gordon Spice, and what an amazing story he has to tell of a packed life with over 27 24 hr race entries to his name inc 14 appearances at Le Mans and a whole lot more. Come and hear it all here in East Hertfordshire all day on Saturday 12th October 2019. Email or pm me for details if you have not attended before to book.

51.jpg41-2.jpg45-2.jpg

When one of our members and loyal supporters has a new book just out I do like to bring it to your attention. Beautifully printed on heavy art paper full of colour photographs it weighs 2 1/2 kilograms and is massive.

Roger Smith has just released this amazing reference work of some 720 pages. It is quite amazing and he will be on hand to show it to all who are interested. There will be a flyer on your seat telling you how to order. Or you can order now by phone direct to Veloce Publishing 01305 260068 or visit f1-1000.veloce.co.uk Roger will of course be pleased to sign on the day, but this is only available now by mail order. We will not have copies for sale on the day. I do recommend it, a remarkable work which must have taken thousands of hours to compile; a fantastic fast reference to every World Championship F1 race since 1950 to the 1000th race in 2019.

Happy Birthday Rich---with plenty of good cheer, albeit via the internet!

Congratulations too for the terrific job you do in bringing enthusiasts together and also for raising funds for charity.

You are a credit to the fraternity. Let's hope it's not too long before the next show.RH-cartoon.jpg

Thank you all for the kind words and good wishes .

Sadly with no film shows this year due to the virus restrictions - our model of 80+ people  mainly of retired (or close to it) age  in one hall sitting and eating together is probably the very last concept to have restrictions lifted.

In reality unless by some  miracle the virus  just dies out on its own( very unlikely) or a vaccine is developed and literally the entire world population  gains immunity from it  as a result. At present there is nothing we can do. So sadly having no guest speakers I have not been able to ask Rod to do any  splendid cartoons really since this time last year to mark the occasion.

I do know many had made new friendships, good camaraderie and they have been fun days and we had a great opportunity to meet and talk to  major figures in motor sport history - and I do very much thank all the splendid speakers we had in 30 film show days over 11 years  . Indeed I know many of you were most appreciative  of my sister Jane and family  producing the home cooking for us all  each day and despite everything  she never missed even one show , neither did Christine who has been so efficient at  keeping  all the very necessary admin and schedule to time .

In the meantime I can only wish you all well - do continue to take the most sensible precautions to keep out of harm's way  - let us hope that normal service will be resumed at some point - hopefully  by next year.

Richard, all of your comments resonate strongly. Your regular film shows have led to new friendships being made, by simply chatting to other guests at the tables and through online connections to arrange car shares. The films themselves (the original core idea of the event) are almost secondary to the interviews and social aspects, not least the opportunity to talk to some of the great names from motorsport of the last fifty years or so. Of course, Jane & Co’s excellent food always enhances the day.

I also hold very grateful memories of how supportive you were when Pat attended the events as her condition developed.

Thank you for your efforts so far, and let’s hope it isn’t too long before the next Film Show can take place.

Frank, I know I would never have met you and Jenny without the film shows. For that I'm forever grateful to Richard and his crew.

Greetings from Sweden

It reminds me that thanks to Richard's Film Shows, (and much more) I have made many new friends and met and chatted with some fascinating people over the eleven years.

Many, many thanks to Richard, Jane, Christine, Bill, Geoff and all the rest of the crew for 11 great years and hoping for more of course.

Stephen
