I guess, we are far away from the original story: 1996 Formula 1 World champion and British Racing Drivers' Club president, Damon Hill will receive an honorary award from the University of Northampton next month at the institution's Winter Graduation ceremonies.
Hill is being presented with an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his career and outstanding F1 success and for his local connections to Silverstone, Northamptonshire where the British Racing Drivers' Club is based.
It just says that Damon gets an award for what he has done! And not for anything he das NOT done. I guess some comments are unfair and are missing the point.
I am proud for Damon and his family that he is choosen for this honour.
Regards from Vienna, Austria - Alfred

There are times when making a comment out of ignorance is one thing -- one of the reasons this forum exists, but launching into a tirade on a political or social issue is quite another. Try the Paddock Club next time...............

As the thread was opened to enquire into Hill's education in the context of him having been offered an honorary award, it would have been somewhat unusual if contributions did not range over adjacent issues such as the patronage, some would say corruption, associated with the awarding of these 'degrees'.

This thread typifies the ongoing decline in standards of behaviour on TNF.
And when, in the absence of an active moderator, respected members of the forum remonstrate with posters all that is elicited is further rudeness.

Any subsequent post which doesn't address this specific issue is off-topic
Any discussion on honorary degrees - quite a different thing from an honorary fellowship - is even further OT
Wuestions of paying for degrees, honorary or otherwise, is further OT still

I was brought up in a place called Oxhey, near Watford. When I write my memoirs, the title will be An Exciting Childhood Near Watford, Among Other Oxhey Morons.
Anyway, a) Damon is one of the good guys; b) Alfred of Austria has made a crucial point; c) I am attempting, with some difficulty, to imagine Doug Nye on a bicycle.
