Hill is being presented with an Honorary Fellowship in recognition of his career and outstanding F1 success and for his local connections to Silverstone, Northamptonshire where the British Racing Drivers' Club is based.

It just says that Damon gets an award for what he has done! And not for anything he das NOT done. I guess some comments are unfair and are missing the point.

I am proud for Damon and his family that he is choosen for this honour.

Regards from Vienna, Austria - Alfred

That there are nutters who have not a clue concerning the concept of honorary degrees and then rant and rave and completely push the discussion -- such as it is -- into a realm better suited for the Paddock Club is more than a bit, well, irritating. There are times when making a comment out of ignorance is one thing -- one of the reasons this forum exists, but launching into a tirade on a political or social issue is quite another. Try the Paddock Club next time...............

If by 'ranting and raving' you mean issuing insults and exaggerated claims, your contribuition fits the bill nicely. As the thread was opened to enquire into Hill's education in the context of him having been offered an honorary award, it would have been somewhat unusual if contributions did not range over adjacent issues such as the patronage, some would say corruption, associated with the awarding of these 'degrees'.

To save yourself from becoming further irritated, would it not be a sensible to concentrate your reading on the very many alternative threads ?

Why?

This thread typifies the ongoing decline in standards of behaviour on TNF.
And when, in the absence of an active moderator, respected members of the forum remonstrate with posters all that is elicited is further rudeness.

The original poster asked about Hill's higher education
Any subsequent post which doesn't address this specific issue is off-topic
Any discussion on honorary degrees - quite a different thing from an honorary fellowship - is even further OT
Wuestions of paying for degrees, honorary or otherwise, is further OT still

Because that is what enquiring minds tend to do - it's the product of higher education.

The 'respected member's' ingenuity in squeezing so much invective into so few lines is impresive indeed. Why not read it.

Russell Burrows -

It would have been nicer, and more in keeping with the original spirit of TNF, if you had not been so rude to the founder of this forum.
As Don says Try the Paddock Club next time...............

I was brought up in a place called Oxhey, near Watford. When I write my memoirs, the title will be An Exciting Childhood Near Watford, Among Other Oxhey Morons.

Anyway, a) Damon is one of the good guys; b) Alfred of Austria has made a crucial point; c) I am attempting, with some difficulty, to imagine Doug Nye on a bicycle.

Very funny! I spent a few years in Watford, under what is now the Inner Ring Road...although, fortunately, we moved before they built it. As to c), is there any chance that's on youtube?

What size of screen would be required?

By the way, Tony, when we moved, in about 1961, the buyer of our house was Gordon Horner.

Gents, can we get back to the topic in question? This thread has veered too far off course, so if that proves impossible then I'll shall just close it.

And can we do so in a normal, civilised TNF manner too please...

Trying to qualify the recalcitrant Brabham BT60B in 1992 must have contributed to his education - at the sixth attempt he qualified for a race at the British GP...

A graduation of sorts will take place tomorrow for Damon when he will stand down as President at the BRDC's AGM at Silverstone.
