With this year’s New Zealand Tasman Revival races over it seems like a good time to start looking forward to the 2010 series which will be featuring the Bruce McLaren Festival, with the expectation of a huge attendance of McLaren cars. I hear from Bruce's sister Jan that they are getting a fabulous response from McLaren owners all around the world, and are expecting it to be a wonderful event.

Are any TNFers thinking of attending?
The thought of a New Zealand summer and numerous McLarens as an alternative to winter in England seems very appealing.

Jan and the team at the Bruce McLaren Trust are also currently working hard on registers of McLaren cars, and the various cars that Bruce drove, and would no doubt like to hear from more present or former McLaren owners or others with any information.

2010 Festival information follows:

Bruce McLaren Trust
The Bruce McLaren Trust welcomes the invitation by the HRC Inc to be part of the Bruce McLaren Festival 2010. The Trust will be keen to see a large number of McLaren and other cars that Bruce was associated with come “home to New Zealand”.

As guardians of New Zealand’s Motorsport History and Heritage, the aims and objectives of the Festival are very much in line with the Trust objectives to promote in perpetuity the memory of Bruce McLaren, and to own, restore, and display McLaren cars.

Linking past present and future is always a priority for the Trust and it is exciting for the Trust to be associated with the Festival.

This will be one of first major events to be held at the new Hampton Downs race track and complex. Bruce was associated with the build of Pukekohe back in 1963 - this is history repeating itself for the Trust to be involved with this new era. I urge you to visit www.hamptondowns.com to view what this large project will do for Motorsport in New Zealand.

For further information on the work of the Bruce McLaren Trust log on to our website www.bruce-mclaren.com

I look forward to seeing you in New Zealand at the Tasman Revival Series 2010 Bruce McLaren Festival.

Tasman Revival Series 2010
The Historic Racing Club Inc is proud to announce
THE BRUCE McLAREN FESTIVAL
to be held in
AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND
JANUARY 2010

In 1970 New Zealand’s Bruce McLaren died in an accident at Goodwood, UK, while testing his latest Can-Am sports racing car in preparation for the 1970 Can-Am series of races to be held in USA and Canada. Forty years later, to mark the significant contribution made by Bruce to international motor sport, the Tasman Revival Series 2010 will feature the ‘Bruce McLaren Festival.’

The Tasman Revival Series 2010 featuring the Bruce McLaren Festival will be held over two consecutive weekends. The first three day race meeting will be held on the new 3.8 km international Hampton Downs race track, on Auckland Anniversary weekend, Saturday 23rd to Monday 25th January 2010. Hampton Downs circuit is located on State Highway One, 60 km south of central Auckland and 70 km north of Hamilton.

The second race event will be held one week later over the period Friday 29th to Sunday 31st January 2010 and will be held on the 2.8km track at the Pukekohe Park Raceway. Bruce McLaren won the 1964 NZ International Grand Prix at Pukekohe driving a ‘works’ Cooper Climax racing car. The Pukekohe race track is located in the township of Pukekohe some 56 km south of central Auckland.

We are expecting a large number of McLaren cars from overseas with a number of owners already confirming their attendance. After the successful Tasman Revival Series 2008 which featured the opening rounds of the Formula Junior 50th Anniversary Celebrations we also expect a large number of Formula Junior Cars to compete in the Tasman Revival Series 2010 as well.

With Formula 5000 going from strength to strength in New Zealand we will be guaranteed a large field of F5000 cars along with Historic Formula 1 cars from the same era in the Tasman Revival Series 2010.

Both of the Tasman Revival Series 2010 events will be promoted and run by the Historic Racing Club (HRC) Incorporated. The HRC has a long & proven reputation for running successful Historic, Classic and Marque Motorsport Events.

If you are interested in these events during the New Zealand summer while the Northern Hemisphere shivers and want more information, check our website www.grandprix.org.nz

I made the trip across the ditch from Sydney in 2008 to the Tasman Revival at Pukekohe and had a great weekend, even just as a spectator.
It looks like I will be doing the same in 2010 at the new track at Hampton Downs.

P.S. Some people look at you a bit strange when you tell them you went to N.Z. for the weekend to watch motor racing. I suppose they will never understand.

I had such a good time at the Revival last year, even though my car broke in the first practice, that I am definitely going again, with a different car ! We have even booked our accomodation already.

As you will all be aware – the eyes of the motorsport world will fall on New Zealand when we welcome the biggest ever gathering of iconic historic and classic racing cars in this country for the double-head NZ Festival of Motor Racing which takes place over consecutive weekends at Hampton Downs and Pukekohe.
We believe that a conservative NZ$100 million plus of some of the sport’s most iconic racers will gather for meetings at the tracks – January 22-24at Hampton Downs and January 29-31 at Pukekohe - with the first theme a celebration of the life and achievements of legendary Kiwi racer and race car builder Bruce McLaren.
Discounted Early Bird tickets are available for a limited time through the event website, www.nzfmr.co.nz.
There are only very limited numbers of tickets available at these advance prices and we would obviously prefer that benefit to be shared with are valued members and their families as widely as possible, so please buy now to avoid disappointment or higher prices!

Rally New Zealand
Media statement
1 October 2009
Rally New Zealand to use Hampton Downs
When the World Rally Championship contenders head for Rally New Zealand in May next year, they’ll get to sample New Zealand’s newest motorsport complex, Hampton Downs, as part of the weekend’s competitive action.
Saturday 8 May will see the Rally New Zealand field utilise the Hampton Downs circuit and facilities for an exciting day of up-close rally action for fans, says Rally New Zealand’s clerk of course Willard Martin.
"Competitors will depart Parc Ferme in Auckland City early on Saturday morning and head south to run stages in the Franklin, and North Waikato," says Martin.
"Late in the morning the field heads for Hampton Downs, which is near Meremere and to the east of the stages used earlier. At this excellent new complex, competitors will run one timed super special stage around the 2.8km asphalt circuit. As New Zealand rally driver Mark Tapper says after his experience running on gravel-spec tyres on tarmac stages in Australia, it’s exciting for both competitors and fans to have the powerful rally cars tackling an asphalt stage on gravel-spec tyres."
The Hampton Downs complex also hosts a remote service park for all teams to perform their mechanical repairs and preparation before the driving crews head back out for the afternoon’s rally stages. Options for corporate hospitality are being developed at present, as are a range of other entertainment options designed to create a family-friendly day of rallying and other motorsport action at the circuit.

The rally cars return to Hampton Downs in late afternoon to complete a second super special stage before returning to the main service park at Auckland’s Queens Wharf.
The modern new Hampton Downs complex offers car fans from the major cities of Auckland and Hamilton and all surrounding areas an excellent opportunity to see the exciting WRC cars in action, says Jamie Kett, CEO of the motorsport and events complex.
"The new venue has another fantastic opportunity to prove its worth as a multiplex of events and activities as it helps host Rally New Zealand on Saturday 8 May," says Kett. "We’re excited to be involved and offer a unique dimension to this iconic motorsport event."
Kett says Hampton Downs Motorsport Park is scheduled to open in October of this year.
"When it does it will be New Zealand's best motorsport facility. The 2.8 kilometre clockwise circuit, one of three in the complex, features six corners, hilly contours, plenty of overtaking opportunities and superb spectator viewing along with top class facilities. Situated 68 kilometres from central Auckland and 65 kilometres from the city of Hamilton the circuit is well placed to attract huge crowds to the exciting events planned for the facility – if you put a dot on Hampton Downs and draw a 220km circle around it, more than half of New Zealand’s population lives in that circle."
Rally New Zealand runs from 6 to 9 May in 2010. The event’s home-base is Auckland City and the route taking competitors both north to Whangarei and Kaipara districts and south to the Franklin, North Waikato and Raglan districts with the remote service parks used on each of the three days now confirmed at the Quayside Town Basin in Whangarei, Hampton Downs motorsport complex and the Raglan airfield.

I am taking 2 cars home. Being a Kiwi, this will be my first race in NZ as I've only ever competed in Europe.

The ex-Bruce McLaren Cooper T51 and a McLaren M1B are leaving from the UK in about 15 days.

"PS anyone heard anything more about a related meeting around the 16th Jan.."

Umm - your own post of 03.Oct reported this ;

"HRC Tasman Revival Meetings
The two non historic Tasman Revival meetings will be held at Hampton Downs 15 /16 /17 January 2010 and Taupo 5 /6/7 February 2010. Entry forms for these events will be posted on www.motorsportentry.com. within two weeks. At present it is planned the Taupo meeting will have a round of the Formula Toyota Championship. Info about this weekend (16/17.Jan) is a bit sketchy, but I spotted it on the Historic Racing Club website - grandprix.org.nz . In addition to F5000 classes listed as racing include ; AES Trade Zone, Alfa Trofeo, Tracer Saloons, BMW Open, BMW E30, Historics, Super Historics, Sports Cars, Classic Trial

It does mean that for those keen enough there is, on consecutive weekends ;

Jan 9&10 - Lady Wigram Trophy meeting - Ruapuna, Christchurch - F5000
Jan 16&17 - Hampton Downs - non Tasman revival (F5000 + classes listed above)
Jan 23&24 - Hampton Downs - "NZ Festival of Motor Sport" featuring Bruce McLaren - see "nzfmr" website
Jan 30&31 - Pukekohe - "NZ Festival of Motor Sport" featuring Bruce McLaren
Feb 6&7 - Taupo - non Tasman revival (F5000 + modern classes?)

It's like the Tasman Series hey day

For those really into forward planning I believe they have announced that NZ FoMR will in Jan 2011 "feature Chris Amon". Could someone please ask Aba Kogan if he might bring the Matra MS120 out to NZ for that. Please. Please

THRIVING FORMULA 5000 REVIVAL SERIES KICKS OF 09/10 SEASON AT MANFEILD

Per capita New Zealand has more restored Formula 5000 racing cars than any other country. And this weekend the 18 confirmed for the opening round of the 2009/10 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series are the main attraction at the 24th annual MG Classic Race Meeting at Manfeild.

The stock-block V8-engined Formula 5000 category was New Zealand's premier motor racing class through the 1970s with the likes of driver/constructor Graham McRae from Wellington, Graeme Lawrence from Hamilton and Ken Smith and David Oxton from Auckland building successful careers on their ability to get the most out of the big, spectacular cars.

Incredible as it may seem, 30+ years on evergreen racing veteran Ken Smith is back behind the wheel of one of the cars this weekend, bringing favourite status with him to Manfeild on the back of his popular win in the 2008/09 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series.

Smith, now 67-years-of-age and in his 53nd consecutive season of national level competition, was first reacquainted with a Formula 5000 single-seater two years ago and after finishing a close second to Christchurch's Chris Hyde in the 2007/08 MSC series returned to win the title in 2008/09.

This weekend he is back behind the wheel of the ex Teddy Pilette/Alfie Costanzo Lola T430 facing competition from 2007/08 series winner Chris Hyde (McRae GM1), former series champion Ian Clements and Napier driver Sefton Gibb (both Lola T332) and Aucklander Aaron Burson (McRae GM1).

Hyde is back after a season's sabbatical behind the wheel of category stalwart Stu Lush's McRae GM1 and this weekend Aucklander Burson will be seen for the first time behind the wheel not of the Talon MR1A he has raced for the past four seasons but the McRae GM1 raced here last summer by Canadian Jay Esterer.

Dunedin's Steve Ross, who impressed last season behind the wheel of one of the earlier model Class A cars, a Lola T142, will also be behind the wheel of a McRae GM1 this weekend, this time the one Chris Hyde used to win the 2007/08 MSC title.

Meanwhile making their debut in the MSC series this weekend are former Truck and SuperGT racer Calven Bonney of Auckland and Rotorua driver Brett Willis.

Bonney has bought the ex Jim Murdoch/Phil Mauger Begg 018 off Invercargill's Noel Atley while Willis has had a Lola T330 restored by Christchurch-based specialists Motorsport Solutions.

Lola is the most popular marque in the field with eight cars followed by McRae with four, the New Zealand-built Begg with three and March and Chevron with one each.

Joining Ken Smith, Sefton Gibb, Ian Clements and Brett Willis in Lolas are Auckland's Shayne Windelburn in a T400, Blenheim's Russell Greer in the ex Graeme Lawrence/Murray Sinclair T332, Poul Christie in a T190 and Kerry Anderson in a T142.

Joining Chris Hyde, Aaron Burson and Steve Ross in McRae GM1s, meanwhile, is Burson's father Peter in his own car.

Local interests are satisfied by the three Begg cars in the field with Calven Bonney driving the last car built by the Southland manufacturer, the 018, young Feilding driver Tim Rush behind the wheel of the ex David Oxton FM4 and Auckland driver Kerry McIntosh driving one of the first F5000 Beggs built, an FM2.

The other two cars in the field are the March 73A-2 of John McKinley and the Chevron B32-01 of Hamish Paterson, both men from Auckland.

The MSC Tasman Cup Revival Series cars head a varied programme of classic and what could be termed contemporary classic categories at the annual MG Classic meeting with support from the Central Muscle Car, BMW, Pre 65 and New Zealand Sports Car categories

Over the years Manfeild has been the scene of some classic Formula 5000 races and chief executive Heather Verry says she that it is always good to see the cars and their drivers back at the circuit.

"Formula 5000 was the premier category of New Zealand motorsport in the 1960s through the 1970s, which is also the period when Manfeild came into life. The circuit hosted some fantastic F5000 racing back in those days, including memorable tussles involving our own Ken Smith, a New Zealand motor-racing legend who, fittingly, will be here this weekend in one of the great cars of the period.

"It's a real coup that people can have the opportunity to come to Manfeild this weekend to see cars these cars in their full glory again. It is a fantastic opportunity for those people who might recall seeing these cars in their heyday, and also for a while new generation who might have only read about the F5000 era but never had the chance to see and hear them.

"F5000 has been described as being the equivalent of speedway sprint cars for the circuit - they are fast, they are loud and they are hugely memorable. We are very lucky to have, in New Zealand, a group of people who have had the passion and foresight to bring these amazing machines back to life, and use them to their full potential."

Cars will be on track at Manfeild from Friday, when testing begins, with qualifying and the first round of races across the classes on Saturday and a full day of racing on Sunday.
The MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series is organised and run with the support of sponsors MSC, NZ Express Transport, Bonney's Specialized Bulk Transport, Pacifica, Toll Holdings, Smith & Davies, Avon Tyres and Exide

DAY 1 REPORT
HYDE BACK TO HIS MSC F5000 SERIES BEST AT MANFEILD
Former series champion Chris Hyde (McRae GM1) was back to his winning best on the first day of competition at the first round of the 2009/10 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series at Manfeild this afternoon.

Hyde, who won 2007/08 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series, claimed pole position with the only sub 1 minute five second time in qualifying this morning then ran away with the first race of the weekend late in the afternoon crossing the finishing line after eight quick, incisive laps with a seven-and-a-half second buffer on second placed Sefton Gibb (Lola T332) with another former series champion, Ian Clements (Lola T332) third a further half a second behind.

In the absence of defending series champion, Ken Smith, who returned home last night after cracking a gearbox housing in practice on Friday afternoon, Hyde got a jump on a fast-starting Gibb then eased away as Gibb found himself defending second place from Clements and - early on in the piece - Dunedin's Steve Ross (McRae GM1).

In his first race in the car Chris Hyde used to win the 2007/08 championship, Ross qualified fourth quickest and was part of a three car battle-pack with Gibb and Clements until he left the track at the Dunlop sweeper, his car sustaining damage to its nose cone, radiator and left front suspension.

That elevated Blenheim's Russell Greer (Lola T332) to fourth with Aaron Burson in his hew ex Jay Esterer McRae GM1 fifth, John McKinlay (March 73A/1) sixth then a mid-pack battle pack of Hamish Paterson (Chevron B32), Peter Burson (McRae GM1) and category newcomer Brett Willis (Lola T330) leading impressive young local driver Tim Rush (Begg FM4) in the first of the Class A (pre 1970) cars.

As Chris Hyde edged away up front, interest mid-race came from the middle of the pack with Aaron Burson slowly closing the gap on Russell Greer, and Brett Willis making up places after a cautious - his first in his new car - start.

Burson beifly got past Greer too, before Greer fought back and Burson ran off the track at Higgins after locking a wheel while in pursuit.

That left Greer in fourth, John McKinlay having one of his best ever races in the category in fifth and Hamish Paterson sixth.

While son Aaron got himself back on the track his father Peter flashed past to eventually cross the finish line in eighth place with Tim Rush the first of the Class A competitors home in ninth and Aaron Burson tenth.

Afterwards race winner Chris Hyde said everything had gone to plan and admitted that he had 'a wee bit' an pace in hand had either Gibb or Clements got closer.

"But in saying that, I think everyone has, " he said. "It's the first meeting of the year and we all want to get to Melbourne (for the final round of the 2009/10 MSC series at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix meeting). In my case, yes, there is still a bit in the car and in me but as much as anything else today was about looking after the car and all the work Stu (Lush the owner) and the guys have put in to get me here."

And runner-up Sefton Gibb?

He was just glad to be abel to start the race after what he described as 'the scariest moment of my motor racing career so far' in qualifying.

"One of the stays on the rear wing broke when I was at maximum speed at the end of the back straight, " he explained. "That folded the wing down towards the ground and the air got under it lifting the whole back end of the car off the ground. I managed to gather it up but when it came down it came down sideways and went one way then the other before I could get it pointing in the right direction again. It was very, very scary and I wouldn't want it to happen again."

Despite the fright, the Napier man drove a fast and calculated race and richly deserved second place.

"The plan," he said," was to tuck in behind Chris (Hyde) at the start and hopefully get the jump on Ian and that, pretty much, is what happened. He (Clements) is a very good driver though and when I missed a gear change towards the end there he made up several car lengths. That's how competitive the class is these days. Miss a gear and you could lose a place!"

MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series newcomer Brett Willis admitted to a couple of missed downshifts himself. But he had a smile a mile wide on his face afterwards and reckoned buying a rare Lola T330 and having it rebuilt for the series was the best thing he has ever done.

"I'm really enjoying it," he said of the crowd-pleasing MSC Revival series."I've always been drawn to these cars and the plan is to improve with each race. It's always nice to pass the odd car or two though and I'm looking forward to the rest of the meeting and season."

As is local driver Tim Rush, whose move to the MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series last season was something of a leap of faith.

""Before I drove this," he said of the ex David Oxton Begg FM5 he and his family own," the only cars I'd raced were a Morris Minor and a Chevron. It's definitely been a steep learning curve but I'm really enjoying it and to win my class today was just fantastic!"
Action at the annual MG Classic meeting at Manfeild, where the MSC F5000 cars are the star attraction, continues on Sunday with a second race in the morning and a third and final in the afternoon.

The MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series is organised and run with the support of sponsors MSC, NZ Express Transport, Bonney's Specialized Bulk Transport, Pacifica, Toll Holdings, Smith & Davies, Avon Tyres and Exide

Chris Hyde winning race 2

MCLAREN TROPHY BACK IN HYDE'S HANDS AFTER MSC F5000 TRIFECTA AT MANFEILD
The Bruce McLaren Trophy is back in Christchurch driver Chris Hyde's hands after another winning performance at the opening round of the 2009/10 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series at the annual MG Classic motor racing meeting at Manfeild over the weekend.

Hyde, who won the MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series in 2008 before taking a sabbatical in 2009, won the Bruce McLaren trophy for the first time at the MG Classic meeting at Manfield in 2007. And he won it for a second time by completing a three race MSC series clean-sweep in the 12-lap feature final at the MG Classic meeting at Manfeild on Sunday.

Having set the quickest lap time in qualifying on Saturday morning then won the first race of the weekend on Saturday afternoon and the second on Sunday morning, Hyde could hardly have had a better start to his 2009/10 campaign. And for that he was quick to thank car owner, series stalwart Stu Lush and his Auckland-based team.

"Really, " he said, " I'm just the guy lucky enough to be under the helmet. Stu, Grant and the boys have put so much time and effort into the car and this campaign, it's as much a win for them as it is for me."

Second in the Bruce McLaren Trophy feature was Sefton Gibb (Lola T332), the Napier man and his crew members winning a battle against time to replace a half shaft which broke in the sprint race on Sunday morning.

Also forced to strip and rebuild his car's transaxle between Sunday's races was second quickest qualifier and former MSC series champion Ian Clements (Lola T332) after he lost the use of second gear - coincidentally while he was disputing second place with Gibb - in the second race.

In the absence of defending MSC series champion, Ken Smith, who returned to Auckland after cracking a gearbox housing in practice on Friday, it was Gibb, Dunedin driver Steve Ross (McRae GM1) and Clements who provided Hyde with his closest competition over the weekend.

Clements qualifying second quickest and finishing third in the first and second races and fourth in the third; Ross qualified fourth and came back from a dnf (did not finish) in the first race to finish second on Sunday morning and third in the afternoon, while Gibb qualified third and bracketed a dnf of his own in the second race with second place finishes in the first and final races.

A clear, and very popular, winner of the Class A category for earlier model cars was Tim Rush, the Feilding local, in only his second season in the MSC series, splitting the later model Class B McRae GM1s of Aaron and Peter Burson in qualifying and ending up with a stand-out sixth place in the final.

"Unbelievable," he said as he was surrounded by well-wishers after that race. " What an amazing race and a fantastic way to finish the weekend."

Action-wise the three races followed a similar pattern, with Hyde getting the jump on Gibb, Clements and Ross at the start with series newcomer Brett Willis (Lola T330) and Auckland drivers John Mackinlay (March 73A/2) and Aaron Burson (McRae GM1) taking a watching brief.

There was also added drama in the final when the Safety Car was deployed late in the race so that Aaron Burson's car could be removed from the gravel trap at the end of the start/finish straight.

That bunched the field up behind race leader Chris Hyde and when the Safety Car returned to the pits the race ended with Hyde leading a closely following Gibb - who set the fastest race lap - Ross, Clements and Willis.

Tim Rush was a weekend-best sixth overall after a daring move around Kerry Anderson (Lola T142) - who was being lapped - and Peter Burson.

Burson had been leading Rush up until that point but was powerless to do anything about the quick-thinking Rush as he was forced to follow Anderson through the infield as Rush made the most of the advantage.

Of the other drivers, for someone who has not raced seriously for over ten years, Rotorua man Brett Willis had a dream MSC series debut, getting quicker and more competitive with each race.

Blenheim's Russell Greer (Lola T332) was part of the battlepack on Saturday and Sunday morning but had to sit the final race out after clutch problems slowed him in the second.

John Mackinlay and Aaron Burson were also quick early on only to strike problems, Mackinlay struggling with and eventually pulling out of the final with fuel starvation problems and Burson locking a front wheel and slipping off the track without damage ('apart from my pride,' he quipped after the final) in the first and third races and accidentally knocking a fuel pump switch off in the second.

Finally while young gun Tim Rush was claiming most of the limelight in the Class A category, long-time class and series supporter Poul Christie (Lola T190) was enjoying the added competition, finishing a meeting-best eighth overall in the final behind Rush and Burson Snr but in front of Kerry McIntosh (Begg FM2) and Kerry Anderson.

The 14-strong MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series field was given top billing at the 24th annual MG Classic meeting at Manfeild with support from the Central Muscle Car, BMW Series and Pre-65 classes.

The meeting was held in unseasonably cool, windy conditions with the rain which had been threatening all weekend finally materializing on Sunday afternoon.

Fortunately for the MSC F5000 series drivers the light showers which dusted the circuit just after lunch blew out and the heavier showers which saw the last Central Muscle Cars' race red flagged started as the MSC cars completed their cool down lap.

The MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series is organised and run with the support of sponsors MSC, NZ Express Transport, Bonney's Specialized Bulk Transport, Pacifica, Toll Holdings, Smith & Davies, Avon Tyres and Exide.

The next round will be part of the annual Lady Wigram Trophy meeting at Christchurch's Powerbuilt Raceway at Ruapuna Park over the January 10-10 2010 weekend.

Ken Smith winning Round 1 in his Lola T-430

KEN SMITH DOMINATES MSC F5000 TASMAN CUP REVIVAL SERIES RACES AT HAMPTON DOWNS

There was a fairytale finish to the final MSC New Zealand F5000 Tasman Cup Revival series race at the inaugural Festival of New Zealand Motor Racing at the new Hampton Downs motor racing circuit south of Auckland on Sunday, evergreen New Zealand veteran Ken Smith (Lola T430) making it four wins from four starts.

Though 2007/08 MSC F5000 series winner Chris Hyde (McRae GM1) pipped him for pole position in qualifying defending series champion Smith proved to be the man to beat in all four races, winning the first from 2009/10 series points leader Steve Ross (McRae GM1) and former series champion Ian Clements (Lola T332), the second from Mark Dwyer (Lola T332) and Chris Hyde, the third from Dwyer and Monaco-based British compatriot Peter Dunn (March 73A) and the final from Dunn and Aaron Burson (McRae GM1).

With a capacity field of beautifully restored and race prepared V8-engined 70s-era cars contesting the third round of their MSC-backed 2009/10 series the Formula 5000s provided one of the highlights of the Hampton Downs meeting with a 10,000-strong crowd enjoying wheel-to-wheel action in all four races.

As well as winning each race 68-year-old super-vet Smith also set the quickest race lap in three of the four races, even bettering 2009/10 title rival Chris Hyde (McRae) pole time (1.02.945) in the third race with a new category track record 1.02.279.

Race 3

Mark Dwyer got the jump on both Smith and Hyde at the start of the weekend's third MSC race on Sunday morning but Smith outbraked the Englishman into the second turn before edging away until the red flag came out and the race was stopped so that a prone car could be moved from the track.

Smith made sure Dwyer didn't get a second fast-starting chance when the race was re-started, claiming his second quickest race lap of the weekend on his way to his third win in as many starts.

Dwyer did try to return the favour on Smith into the second turn but the wily local veteran remained in front before easing away to eventually cross the finish line just over four seconds in front of Dwyer with compatriot Peter Dunn a further second back in third and Steve Ross fifth.

Hyde and Roger Williams disputed third place before the red flag came out, but both struck problems - Hyde spinning in his car's own water when a hose blew, Williams holding third place behind Smith and Dwyer until the last lap when he was slowed and eventually stopped by a driveline problem.

That left the way open for Peter Dunn to take the fight for second place to Dwyer, the difference at the flag just over a second with Steve Ross fourth, Ian Clements fifth and Aaron Burson sixth.

Visiting British drivers Mike Whatley and Daryl Taylor were ninth and tenth, Whatley again the quickest of the Class A competitors, with Bill Hemming (Elfin MR8 A/C) the best of the MSC series' four-strong Australian contingent in 12th

Race 2

It was Chris Hyde who got the jump on the field in the second MSC race (over 6 laps) of the weekend on Saturday afternoon, but Smith stalked him and made a successful bid for a lead he would again never lose on the third lap. Dwyer followed Smith's example a lap later leaving Hyde third then a gap to a battle for fourth between Steve Ross and Roger Williams

Second of the visiting overseas drivers home was Peter Dunn in sixth with Sefton Gibb seventh, Aaron Burson eighth and Ian Clements ninth.

With Mike Whatley a dnf in this race Class A honours reverted to local driver Kerry McIntosh in his New Zealand-built Begg FM2, the Aucklander crossing the line in 19th position.

The day's second race also saw the first race appearance this season of Calven Bonney in his recently acquired Begg 018, the former Truck and SuperGT class racer from Auckland finishing 21st in his first competitive outing in the car.

Race 1

Fittingly Smith got his weekend off to a good start with victory in the first race, over 6 laps, on Saturday morning, assuming a lead he would never lose after an action-packed first lap which saw Mark Dwyer spin off the damp track at the infield hairpin after grabbing an early lead, then pole man Chris Hyde fall back and eventually retire with brake problems.

Relishing the clear track in front of him Smith put his head down and eased away from the field crossing the finish line after six laps with a 16 second lead over Steve Ross with Ian Clement a further seven seconds back.

Clements was one of the big movers in the race, working his way from 10th on the grid to fourth with one lap to go and third at the flag after passing Sefton Gibb on the last lap.

Also making up plenty of places were Bruce Leeson (from 21st to eighth) and Frank Lyons (McLaren M26).

Driving one of the two McLaren F1 cars which have joined the F5000s for the weekend, Lyons passed an average of three-and-a-half cars a lap to get from the back row of the grid to ninth by the time the chequered flag came out.

Best of the 11-strong group of visiting drivers was Mike Whatley who crossed the line fifth (a placing which also earned him first Class A car home honours) with Peter Dunn sixth and Bruce Leeson eighth.

Dunn got a good start from P9 on the grid but lost several places when he was forced off the track to avoid the spinning Mark Dwyer.

Dwyer made it back onto the track unscathed but was one of seven starters who did not make the finish line, in his case because after coming off in his hand, his car's gear lever ended up jammed between the throttle and brake pedals.

Other retirees were Judy Lyons and Alastair Russell (engine problems), Chris Hyde (brakes), John MacKinlay and Daryl Taylor (contact) and Greg Thornton.

This weekend's New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing - Bruce McLaren meeting was the first of two (the second is at Pukekohe's Pukekohe Park Raceway over the January 30-31 weekend) with both attracting bumper entries across all categories including the MSC NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series.

Not Really. Certainly not in the class of Puke or Wigram. As a kiwi who has never seen o/s racing except on TV it was certainly something to see a track with some awesome elevation changes.

Assuming this is the real ex-Richards Twincam, and not a re-creation - some of us saw it in action the same weekend as you, at the TNF Hertfordshire film show, in the hands of Mike Crabtree
