And the lunch which included:

A recent festive season tradition is the get-together of motorsport drivers, mechanics, engineers, supporters and other aficionados at the holiday home of Janet Wilson and Greg Mills in Pringle Bay. Held over a feast of crayfish (generously supplied by racers Derek Hulse and Peter Little – also Pringle Bay homeowners), the event has grown from around 20 in 2005 to the most recent event, held on 27 December 2008, with more than 50. The 2008 lunch included a number of Johannesburg-based racers to honour the release of the book on Paddy Driver, their attendance generously organized by Eddie Keizan.

The event is held within the spirit of the establishment of the Motor Racing Legends Trust earlier this decade, the idea behind its formation to provide an endowment to support former drivers and others who have fallen on hard times. The aim of the trust is to raise R1 million through a number of sources including the books written by Greg Mills and Robert Young.

Legend’s Lunch, Pringle Bay, 27 December 2008. Attendees: Dave Charlton, Eddie Keizan, Uta Blignaut, Jackie Pretorius, Mary Tingle, Philip and Ann (Tingle) Johnson, David and Debbie Tingle, John and Sheelagh Tingle, Colin and Eva Davis, Paddy Driver, Bruce Johnstone, Rob and Sue Young, Don Philp, Peter Little, Derek Hulse, Dickon Daggitt, Janet Cotton, Peter Gough, Nigel Payne, Koos Swanepoel, Bill Jennings, Peter de Klerk, Nanette Mills, Larry Swantner, Dale Lautenbach, Patrick and Yvonne Lautenbach, Kenny and Sheila Gray, Piet van Niekerk, Andrew and Di Thompson, Jock Boyer, Ernest Pieterse, Andrew Thompson, Stef Kruger, Arnold Chatz, Basil Green, Di Dugmore, Dave Alexander, Eric Salomon, John Amm, Roddy Mills, Shelley Sandell, Janet Wilson and Greg Mills. Apologies were received from Frank Hoal and Tony Maggs (attendees in 2005 and 2006), Neville Austin (2006), Denis Joubert (2006 and 2007), Gordon and Su Littleford (2005), Tim and Jeanne (Tingle) Clark (200-7), Bob van Niekerk (2007) and Neville Lederle.

This turned out not only to be a four-wheel event, but a number of other sportspeople dared also to show their faces! We have worked out that those present (Messrs. Keizan, Charlton, Pretorius, Johnstone, Philp, Jennings, Payne, Pieterse, Driver, Davis, De Klerk) together drove in over 40 Grands Prix, there were four Olympic selections (for cycling – Boyer and Swantner), five Tours de France (Boyer) with a best finish of 12th, more than ten SA rowing titles (Wilson, Mills and Johnson) and about the same number of Henley appearances (Daggitt, Mills, Johnson and Wilson), one Nine-Hour (Johnstone) and one Wynns 1000kms (Keizan) victory each, several SA saloon car titles (Chatz, Swanepoel, Keizan, and Gough), three SA F5000 titles (Driver twice, and Keizan), two SA karting titles and World Championship appearances (Mills and Mills), nine SA driver’s championships between Messrs Jennings (3) and Charlton (6), one Targa Florio victory (Davis in 1964), one SA and UK Formula Ford championship each (Gray), and a fourth (Davis) and a sixth (De Klerk) at the Le Mans 24 hour in 1966.

I am posting that e-mail herewith but am as yet unable to edit and post the attached photos due to the format in which they have been sent to me. I am attempting to resolve this issue one way or another, and will post them on Gail's behalf in due course on this thread.

Hello

Please will you post this message and the photos for me? I haven't a clue as to how to do it. I am Shirley's cousin and she was my godmother, so Jackie came to be my 'godfather' by marriage.

They were a great couple, always hospitable (even to unannounced crowds of hungry and thirsty teenagers - I well remember the day Walls ice-cream presented him with the ice-cream celebratory cake - we stopped in on an impulse to say hi and were immediately welcomed andd invited to share in the celebration), loved to dance, were immensely soft hearted towards and kind to animals, even adopting stray cats that just pitched up on the doorstep, generous to a fault (renting me a car when mine was stolen), and helping me buy my first (and second and third set of wheels), and always but always, plain full of fun and mischief.

They took my daughter and me to Sun City for a holiday, had us around to stay, and Jackie spent long sessions teaching my little daughter to swim and dive in their pool at Glen Austin.

I cannot begin to tell you of the deep sadness we feel at their horrible fates, but hope you will post for me the photos I attach here so others can see them in happier times.

I left South Africa in 1999 because of the violence, and never dreamed that my two favourite people in the world would succumb to it.

In the Sun City photos, I am standing between them. In their wedding photo, I am the little flowergirl. My older sister Lyn is the bridesmaid. In turn, when Lyn was married Jackie and Shirley were their best man and maid of honour. If I recall correctly, the two dogs were Gigi and Cha Cha (Esperanza of Sunningdale to give her her full pedigree name!).

Many thanks

I have now received an extended personal tribute from Gail Joslin, and the photo's she referred to. This is a very personal and touching insight that Gail wants to share with Jackie's friends and fans, and I am delighted to be able to do this on her behalf.

Gail has also asked me for assistance in obtaining photos of Jackie's great friend, Doug Serrurier, and also of Pieter de Klerk; can anyone on TNF be of assistance to her with this?

Dear All.

I am Shirley's cousin and she was my godmother, so Jackie came to be my 'godfather' by marriage.

They were a great couple, always hospitable (even to unannounced crowds of hungry and thirsty teenagers) - I'll always remember the day Walls ice-cream presented him with the ice-cream celebratory cake - 15 of us stopped in at their house in Blairgowrie on an impulse to say hi and were immediately welcomed and invited to share in the celebration braai). They loved to dance, and taught me to do the Cha Cha, Rumba and Samba.

They were so happy to buy their property in Glen Austin - the only other house there was the double storey one opposite. It was so rural that Jackie waged a constant battle of wits against the wild rabbits that loved the vegetables he was growing. They created a paradise garden and nurtured the wild birds and animals that visited it.

They were immensely soft hearted towards and kind to animals, even adopting stray cats that just pitched up on the doorstep, (more of this below), generous to a fault (renting me a car when mine was stolen and refusing to let me pay them back), and helping me buy my first (and second and third set of wheels), and always but always, were plain full of fun and mischief.

When I was about seven years old I went to our aunt Snowy’s house in Highlands North for the weekend and Shirley and Jackie brought over their young mongrel dog Butch of whom they were very proud. Scruffy and nothing to write home about in the beauty stakes, he was a highly intelligent animal – he was watching my mom and aunt turning a long skipping rope so my friend and I could practise running in, skipping and running out. Then out of the blue, having never met us or seen this activity before, Butch timed it perfectly – he ran in just after I had run out, jumped up and down on his hind legs about eight times and then ran out to wait his turn again. He never once tripped up the rope and the three of us kept doing this for about half an hour. Then he tired of it and went over to get his food bowl, balanced it on top of his nose and set off to hunt down Jackie. Needless to say he got some great treats from Jackie who was beaming from ear to ear. This was a favourite story he repeated many times to friends.

At breakfast time every morning Jackie kept an extra side plate next to him on the dining table so that he could feed tidbits of his food to his faithful dogs and cats. Shirley pretended to be exasperated with this habit of his, but she was probably even more besotted with them, and often did the same. So everyone just laughed at the show.

They had a magnificent friendly longhaired black and white cat that they never got around to naming, and she was therefore known as ‘Kitty Pretorius’. At about the age of 25 years she finally succumbed to old age. About 10 days before she died, a really beautiful female cat appeared on the property, took up a post on the wall outside the kitchen and kept meowing at Shirley who was adamant she was not going to feed it and kept telling it not to make itself comfortable. Of course Jackie sabotaged this, and the cat moved in – I know they were both very happy about this, feeling that somehow the ‘jungle telegraph’ of animals had foretold Kitty’s imminent demise, and it helped ease the pain of Kitty P’s death for them both.

They adored their dogs, and had a little bed specially made, complete with pillow, sheets, valance, duvet and bedspread. When it was bedtime, Jackie told the dog (I think it was Cha Cha) to go to bed and she got in just like a baby, covered herself up and fell asleep. Others of her dogs copied this and they all got turns.

They had another little dog that was a real grumbler that they named Brommie. He used to strut around like a sergeant major, and this gave Jackie and Shirley some good laughs. Friends of theirs will know who they named this dog after (I’m not telling).

The dogs were very protective of Shirley: Jackie would sometimes ‘play fight’ with Shirley and watch the dogs go berserk, yapping and snarling like crazy at him. But then the next minute they would waltz over to get him to scratch their tummies. It was a crazy household – with lots of laughter and pranks.

They took my daughter and me to Sun City for a holiday where inevitably Shirley won enough money to pay for the accommodation. Jackie taught my daughter to swim and dive in their pool at Glen Austin when she and I were there on holiday, and he was so incredibly patient and kind. She has really good memories of this.

My favourite flowers are sweet peas. Shirley grew them outside their bedroom. Whenever they were in bloom she and Jackie would ‘order’ me to cut as much as I wanted because they insisted that the more I cut the better the plant would grow. No matter how many I took they would cut about six times more and ‘force’ them on me to take home – a really generous couple!

Anyone who ate at their home knows how wonderful the food was in taste and how generous the quantity and how no-one got to leave without ‘doggie bags’ to take home with them. She also made wonderful ice-cream and cakes, and patiently taught me how to untangle jewellery chains and clean jewellery with toothpaste and washing up liquid. However, sadly she was never able to make me to be as efficient, clean and tidy at keeping house as she was.

Shirley had a remarkable talent for being able to conduct multiple telephone conversations without missing a word or forgetting what she or the other persons had said, and could pick up and continue any one of them at a moment’s notice.

She was highly valued by SA Philips and when she left their employ was invited to help herself to any products she wanted. She and Jackie did not think just of themselves – they gave Snowy a radiogram, and I still to this day have the hand mixer I received at the age of 16. Whenever I had to leave and make the journey back to Cape Town, Jackie would pack my car with lots of homebaked goodies, freshly harvested vegetables and fruits from their garden and stacks of tasty padkos to keep us going on the long road, and his talent for using every inch of space in the car was a work of art few could copy. Not to mention the brilliant gifts of Wynn's car products that I found secreted in little corners when I got home.

Whenever I think of them, I always see them laughing, and so I hope that these memories and anecdotes help others to remember the good times, and not dwell on the end of their lives. They gave so much of themselves to others, and everyone who was privileged to spend some time in their company came away enriched in many ways and with more than they could ever have given.

I cannot begin to tell you of the deep sadness we feel at their horrible fates, but hope you will post for me the photos I attach here so others can see them in happier times.

RIP Shirley and Jackie – we all love and thank you for allowing us so generously to share your lives.

Your cousin

Gail

Sad, sad news.

While writing this message, I'm looking to the wall of my home. There is a big poster that I made when I was about 20. A number of pictures that I loved. I cut them from magazines.
There is Mad-Ronald in his red March 711; Rikky von Opel in a dark green Ensign; Nanni Galli's Iso-Marlboro; Jacques Laffite's Ligier with the big airscope; the dark-blue Walker-Lotus 49 of GH at Monaco; Chris Amon in his light-blue Amon; Pedro's BRM; Emmo's JPS; Andrea de Adamich in a red Surtees; Lauda's and Rega's Ferraris and many others.
On the bottom of the poster, between Jochen Rindt and Denny-the-Bear I have a small small picture of an orange-and-black Brabham BT26A.
He is Jackie Pretorius.

Thank you very much for sharing this tribute. It very much says it all.

At Jackie's funeral on Friday the pallbearers included Paddy Driver, Peter de Klerk and Dave Charlton. The scripture reading was from Psalm 23.

When I was in my first year of primary school, my brother who is 10 years my senior, had a Castrol booklet / race programme he got at a race meeting held at Killarney. At the time I was intrigued by the photo of the Walls sponsored car in the booklet because at that age ice-cream was an important part of one's diet (still is). Well, as the years rolled on and my brother's interest in racing cars rubbed off on me, I came to know who actually drove the car and what a role he played in South African motor racing.

It therefore came as a shock when this thread appeared on the forum of the attack on Jackie Pretorius especially after what had happened to his wife previously. However, I just want to thank Hieronymus for
keeping us up to date during this sad time. Having just read Psalm 23 again, I trust it will comfort those who are in grief over this sad loss.

Gail's tribute gave us some insight into the private life of this great racing driver and personality. Gail, thank you for taking the time to share so much with this forum. I am sure there are many more wonderful memories that you have and that will live with you forever.

PS. Marius thank you for the PM you had sent me regarding the Wordsworth poem recited by Jackie Pretorius. Any chance of it being added to this thread?

Unfortunately it is on my office PC, so I can't post it right now.

Jackie was apparently fond of reciting from poems and people like Wordsworth, Shakespeare et al. I think it was John Fitzpatrick who said that he was completely stunned when he heard Pretorius reciting a famous poem in his heavy Afrikaans accent. Then there is also the nice story of the time when Jackie cornered Jody Scheckter, just before the latter left for Europe. Jackie told Jody that he wanted to learn him some big words to impress the Europeans/Brits. He said he would give him three there and then - AGRICULTURE, FURNITURE and MARMALADE. Preferably to be used in conjunction with one another...

A couple of years ago, I had a good "lunchtime" session with Jackie at his favourite haunt, "The bowling club". ISRC its in Observatory. Anyway there he was in his 70s playing pool and holding court with his mates, he was just as I had remembered him from his visits to Bulawayo in the F5000 days. And then to top it all he starts singing "Me and Bobby McGee" , word perfect I might add. Kristofferson would have been proud.... Cheers Jackie you were the real deal and you brightened a lot of peoples lives. Its nice to think that you're finally back together in peace with your beloved Shirley.

Friends:

Isn't there something we can do together, someone of major influence in South Africa to whom we can express our feelings? Do South Africa's leaders understand that this is abnormal and unacceptable to the civilized world? Can we somehow inspire them to try to improve the situation to prevent at least some future tragedies? In racing, we look at a tragedy and see how it could have been avoided, then we do something to prevent another. How can we do that here? The loss of these two people and many others surely justifies some effort. How do we direct it?

Ten years ago exactly I went down to Johannesburg on business to visit Mick Formato who used to race Formula Ford with some success against Scheckter, and his son Gary, the voice of F1 South Africa (I am told) and winner of the Kyalami 9 hours. It was at the time of the "taxi wars" when cab companies were machine gunning down their rival's customers. I stayed in Sandton, and witnessed no violence of any sort in that pretty but sanitised part of town. It did amaze me at the time how many of Mick's employees had been carjacked at sometime, and they seemed to consider it part of daily life.
By sheer coincidence, a day after my return to the UK I spoke with the author Wilbur Smith who I recall lived in Capetown. He told me a then recent story of his new nextdoor neighbour moving in without security fencing, floodlights, alarms etc for the first few days. He too had an uninvited nocturnal visitor whom he engaged in a violent tussle, eventually restraining him. It was at this point when he asked his wife to phone for the Police that the intruder advised him not to do so as he would get a short prison sentence after which he would return to rape his wife and burn his house down. The neighbour told his wife not to bother making the phonecall and to bring him his revolver................

The anecdotes about Jackie are quite wonderful! What a colourful character he was, and how we could do with the like of him in our sport, in any sport, in life today.
Re. the violence, I repeat my earlier post herewith. What struck me on my visit to Jo'burg was the complacency; they have had it for so long down there that it has become part of life and I found that quite scary when talking to people. It will almost inevitably take some dreadful occurance, perhaps at the World Cup when the international spotlight is on South Africa for world opinion to force the South African government to take the drastic steps necessary in order to negate this now long running problem.
Let's hope Jackie & Shirley did not die in vain.

This song was also played at Jackie's funeral.

I received the following pic from Robert Young over the weekend. Rob asked me to post it on TNF. I am sure he will comment later, but the photo was taken on 27 December 2008 at the gathering of "old" racing people in Pringle Bay (see photos of an earlier post). Peter de Klerk and Jackie Pretorius.

Marius I cannot 'see' the photo. Maybe it's because of the local internet or my computer?

Anyway Peter and Jackie were signing advance copies of the book "Paddy Who' by Greg and Denis Mills, Ken McLeod and another.

Jackie was as pleasant, mischievous, friendly, approachable, humble as ever and had seemed to be over the terrible grief after his wife's murder.

I have said to Greg that at least he had a wonderful day and enjoyed himself - as did we all.

Sadly, we get almost 'immune' to such atrocities - until it happens to us .........senseless....barbaric...words fail me

Rob, not sure if others have the same problem? It is pretty clear on my PC. I am not using imageshack anymore, since I have too much trouble accessing them and their download speed is far too slow.

BTW...a great book and a splendid effort by you and Greg Mills. Nice to see that it also contains photos of Jackie.

I have no problem opening the great pic, Hieronymus. I would like to try and purchase the book, "Paddy Who"; do you have an isbn number for it, so I can order it?

I will try to search out pics of Jackie in the various, (and seemingly many!) cars he campaigned during his career; this is turning into a bit of a difficult, but rewarding challenge!

An e-mail received by me today from Gail..................

Hello Tony

Thanks for your email. I'll take a look at the picture - thank you for letting me know. (Jackie & Pieter).

The weather here was horrible over the Easter weekend and so I just mooched around the house, watched TV (why, I have no idea - it's all rubbish), and switched off my cellphone. Feel better now.

Was thinking about another Jackie episode: we all went fishing for the day at Hartebeespoort Dam. Shirley had packed in a tin of Sharp's toffees along with all the food, and Butch (still a puppy) found and scoffed around half a dozen - only thing is that his jaws got stuck and he couldn't open his mouth, but was frothing like mad. After Jackie had picked himself up off the ground laughing, he had to scoop out all the gunk, and then insisted on brushing Butch's teeth so they wouldn't rot from the sugar. Dog wasn't crazy about the treatment. He was also quite cautious about stealing toffees again, although he did really like them.

A rather belated tribute to Jackie (and Shirley) - may you both RIP together. A legend in South African motor racing and obviously to all who loved him dearly ...............

 Definitely. I was re-reading this thread a few days ago and thought again what a loss Jackie's passing has been.

One of a generation of South Africa legends. Getting fewer by the month.

I wonder if the savages were ever caught following Jackie's murder? If so, probably let loose by now.

Have not heard anything through the grape vine of any capture, and certainly nothing regards a trial. Another great result by our friends in blue I'm afraid.
