I think you've hit the nail on the head there Brynmor. As much as we all love to visit the circuit my observation over the last few years is of an event that's not taken seriously by MSV, does appear to become more 'watered down' as the years go by, does indeed lack fresh ideas and pales into insignificance in comparison to the Silverstone Classic. Sad but true ?

Trevor Taylor in the Team Elite Surtees TS5, pristine in white at Oulton Park September Guards 5000 meeting in 1969, the second visit of F5000 to the circuit in that first season. The race was won by Mike Walker in his Alan McKechnie Racing Lola T142 Chevrolet.
Trevor very nearly won that inaugural championship, only losing out when he collided with eventual winner, Peter Gethin at Brands Hatch.
Trevor was Jim Clark's No2 at Team Lotus in 1962 and 63. He's 72 now, and living in the Sheffield area. I would be really nice if someone could persuade him to come to the Gold Cup this season???

Surely that was the third 'visit' for the F5000s as they were part of the Gold Cup race as well?

Yes Steve, you are technically correct, although it was not part of the F5000 championship even though it was sponsored by Guards. As the programme states "for Formula 1 Cars, and 8 invited leading Formula 5000 cars". These turned out to be Willie Forbes,Jackie Oliver,Mike Walker,Mike Hailwood,& Keith Holland in Lola T142's,Andrea de Adamich and Trevor Taylor in the work's Surtees TS5's, and Alan Rollinson who was entered in Doug Hardwick's T142, but in the event finished in 6th place in a Brabham BT30 entered by Irish Racing Cars.

Pictured above, Willie Forbes West End Garage, Aberdeen entered Lola T142 pictured in the paddock at Oulton Park before the Guards 5000 Guineas F5000 race, March 27th, 1970.

I was reminded of this pic when I saw the similar yellow Lola T142 for sale on the Motorsport Vision/Oulton Park stand at Cholmondeley at the weekend, supervised by our very own Kingsleyrob.

As the Gold Cup meeting is less than 6 weeks off now, is there any news of anything special coming together to celebrate 40 years of Formula 5000?

A nostalgic moment for me; Mike Hailwood's new Epstein-Cuthbert/Team Lola T190 at the old fuelling station in the Oulton paddock. Mike pranged it in part 1 of the race, and didn't make part 2.

Neither did Trevor Taylor's Team Surtees TS5A seen behind the pits as the team struggled with engine maladies that could not be cured in time.

I hope the HSCC can put up a good show at this year's Gold Cup and capture some of the atmosphere of those wonderful days of F5000 at Oulton Park.

Perhaps it would be gallant to forward a copy of the Prophet shot to his daughter who posted on here a while ago when she was establishing the David Prophet Racing www. website thing. ISTR that she was a very positive supporter here.

Re. the Gold Cup, we were quizzing Aurora Phil about progress made towards getting a field of F5000 cars together for the 40th anniversary celebration on the formula, and it crossed my mind that there are so many out there that are rarely seen, but it would be lovely if they turned out....

Pictured is a rarity; this is a McLaren M10A that was rebuilt by Simon Hadfield and then given one race by him to win a round of the HSCC- Derek Bell series in March 2008. IIRC it was the ex-David Good car; wouldn't it be great to see that out again, as it was an M10A in the hands of Peter Getin that won that opening round at Oulton in 1969.........

Phil did tell us that both Peter Gethin and Mike Walker are expected to attend the meeting, but wouldn't it be great if they could get the Taylor's, both Sid and Trevor there for it, and there must be many other personalities from that period about out there.......

Where art thou, Jake Allport?

Whither Kaye Griffiths?

Fred Saunders, Davy Powell, John Bowtell, Bob Miller, Lingard Goulding - It would be great to see some of the characters of early F5000 make it to Oulton.

I've been in touch with John Bowtell but can others be made aware of the event such as David Berry, Willie Forbes, Bob Evans, Gordon Spice, Mike Wilds, Dennis Leech Jock Russell, Damien Magee etc etc.

Can anyone make contact with these guys? Its sure to be a fun weekend.

I have been given an introduction to Sid Taylor (who lives close to me) by our very own Jerry Entin, and have referred this to MSV who are running the event before I take it any further. More may come of this. I've also been in contact with Bev Bond who drove the Hepworth-Ferguson in the first race at Oulton; he will be there, due to the F3 reunion, but I'm not sure the car still exists...... anyone?

This McLaren M10B is arguably the most successful F5000 of all time. It gave Peter Gethin his second championship with 8 wins and 9 fastest laps, before giving Derek Bell a win in his first F5000 race, and further wins to Reine Wisell. It was pictured here at the 2008 Festival of Speed where it was entered by Mark Longmore and driven by Matthew Wurr. I wonder if this iconic car can be persuaded to appear at this year's Gold Cup celebration?

A little at a tangent, can anyone advise what happened to the Dulon of Bob Miller.
A strange looking one-off car, but part of the mix that made the Formula interesting.

As you all know by now, we are having a get together for F5000 "Old Boys" at the Gold Cup.

There will be a reception for them on Sunday night and I am going to set up a projector showing period F5000 Oulton Park pictures.

With the kind permission of Messers Giraffe and Cox, I will be using the fine examples shown on this thread.

Does anyone out there have some more I can borrow?

Phil,
If you PM me an e-mail address, I'll send some files direct to you; it's a bit of a palaver posting them here, I have to resize them and put them on my website first. They are all along the lines of this one, which has suffered some compression for web, the full-size files are better. Some of them will be in Mr Lawson's forthcoming F5000 book

I have been attempting with the kind assistance of Jerry Entin to get Sid Taylor to attend the Gold Cup, as he was one of the formula's most successful entrants. In doing so, I have enlisted the help of Chris Sharples of HSCC and of Grahame White who knew Sid from those days.

Here is an excerpt from a recent PM from Chris to myself:

"Alan Jones in the HSCC office tells me that to date we have confirmations from Peter Gethin, Ian Ashley, Mike Walker, Chris Featherstone, Alan Rollinson, Gordon Spice and we are still hunting more names (I would like to see Tom Belso re-united with the 208 Lola).Frank Lyons says Trimmer is driving one of Frank's cars. We received a very kind letter of apology from Brian Redman.

To clarify on cars; When I spoke to Simon this morning he said he would try and get the 10A on the truck, Marl Longmore (the owner of the 10B has entered the car to race, I believe we have an M18, as you know Bev (who is coming up) will hopefully be re-united with the Hepworth, we'll have a Surtees and my task in the next few days is to attract a 142 and ring the man with the Harris.

Independent of the F5000 stuff, Brian Classick and a few friends are arranging something in memory of Rodney Bloor."

Here are a couple of random shots I took with my trusty Instamatic at Knickerbrook, Oulton Park where I was marshalling for the 20th September 1969 F5000 meeting. I need some help with identification.
The first shot may be Alan Rollinson in Doug Hardwick's Lola T142???; it is distinguished by the high oil cooler over the rear wing, and the driver appears to be wearing a yellow helmet. Now the second pic I think features Terry Sanger with open face helmet in John T. Williamson's BRM P83. Both these cars were powered by Ford V8's.
