I sincerely hope this does not happen. It's just a name, but Brawn deserves his name in the spotlight. Not being taken over by an opportunistic businessman

No, the Brawn name was always going to go at one or the other, they need a title sponsor, but I agree I'm not impressed with Virgin, but hopefully someone else can jump in quick

If you read what Brawn said earlier, 'Brawn GP' was a temporary solution, for the time they don't have title sponsor. They have now, not THAT much of a story really.

I admit to being a bit emotional, and maybe not reading the news properly. Still, "name" teams like Williams always carry a bit more of the true independant racing spirit.

Better a team with someone else's name than no team at all, and in the current climate, where sponsors are cancelling, I don't think you should be harsh on a new sponsor who sees opportunity where others are short sighted and see profit for shareholders. Like I said in the other thread I am biased towards Virgin as they sponsor the London Air Ambulance, so you have to take my words with that bias. :)

I'd rather see Branson and his big grin than Fred Goodwin and his bulging wallet at GP's :D

Andy

iirc they need the support of all other teams to change their name this year, what's the chance of that happening after the 1-2 today?

Virgin is not a title sponsor.
Not yet.
They are in talks to increase the funding within the next few weeks and what is apparently on the table is to call the team 'Virgin (F1?)' if agreed.

I liked the name, it seems wrong that virgin will be taking it over.

Slowinfastout also has a very good point, this car was developed by honda who at the time had a huge budget, of course brawn probably had a influence on the design so its his car also. I wonder now if honda are regretting pulling out.

I don't really get all the negative towards Brawnson on this board. He looked quite honest during the interview when when was asked about being on the front row from the get go: "well, we decided to invest in the best engineer and.. Ok, I'm a lucky bastard". And sure, I'd rather have a team named Brawn GP than Virgin GP (or Honda) on the grid, but it's still Brawn's team, it doesn't matter that much.

Wrong. This is the Honda team, led by Brawn. The Honda engine is gone. What's left is what Brawn put in place, with Honda Money. Now it's what he put in place with someone else's money

No it's the Brawn team without the handicap of a Honda engine and bad management

It probably boils down to he always getting his name on tv and his high profile marketing gimmicks which rubs people up the wrong way, but like I said he also does stuff you wouldn't really know about such as the London Air Ambulance etc.

Like you I'd far rather have someone like him who sums up the individual rather than corporate boards who sponsor most of the teams. Also, unlike a lot of people who want to own their own team, for the kudos and then take it nowhere ( Midland anyone?) he is clever enough just to let the people best suited to run it actually run it.

Ross seems happy, he's always wanted to run a team and now he has and I am very happy for him how it has turned out up to now. The first layer of icing on the cake will be a win tomorrow.

This isn't worth the news article it's gotten at the moment - Richard Branson was just asked about the possibility of taking over the team name, and he said it was possible, which is what anybody would say.

When asked if it was possible Virgin could take over the name of the team, Branson said: "It is certainly a possibility. But we will see what happens over the next three or four weeks.

It's a non-story for now.

Just a long as Branson doesn't come in and starting f***ing things up... we've got a little fairytale going on at the moment, and i want to enjoy that :)

Why it can't just be Brawn GP with Virgin all over it beats me... its hardly like Branson put the team together himself... did you see how quick he flew down to Melbourne when it looked like the funny little white cars were going to go well? Hes a total opportunist.

Virgin taking over the name sounds okay as long as Branson is kept away from the decision making within the team.

There's no need to be sentimental about losing the Brawn GP name in just the same way as there's no need to be sentimental about losing the Honda one (or at least, I seemed to be getting slapped down by other posters for even so much as making a faint suggestion about that the lustre of that marque's F1 history at the time of their withdrawal announcement). I've not read the full news article yet, but just so long as he leaves the day-to-day running to the same men and simply provides some financial clout, then surely nothing will change for the worse, on or off track, and indeed only for the better... hopefully.

No, it's a Brawn team with a 18-month Honda developed chassis.

The Honda engine would not be a handicap because it would have been allowed the same upgrades Merc and Ferrari were allowed during the engine freeze.

I can't see how Branson is any worse than Malya? Branson, although a businessman, does seem to have an adventurous spirit. I think Virgin Galactic is brilliant way to spend some money, he has lots of it and let's not forget, this is what Brawn need if they are to be able to keep Ferrari and McLaren from roping them back in.

I have no qualms about the team being renamed, and the livery being plastered in Virgin colours.

Branson's got the money. He's not a boring businessman in a suit, and I'm sure he'll leave the team in Brawns hands. Who wouldn't?

It might not. McLaren's are still named after Ron Dennis' old F3 team? (IIRC?)

But yeah.

Branson has money. Lots of money. Just like Malya. This can surely only be a positive thing for Brawn and the team. Virgin is a pretty big deal. Maybe if this season goes well they'll have a bigger budget to ensure they can always fight at the top from now on?

EDIT: As usual it looks like the forum is torn between people that actually give a damn about the sport and the team, and people that like to have Big Brother style vendettas against certain people  So the fuck what if Branson is just trying to get publicity.

THAT'S__________WHAT__________SPONSORSHIP___________IS__________FOR

It's a mutually beneficial deal. To accuse someone of sponsoring someone because they want their name out there is the most retarded thing I've ever read on a motorsport forum. F1 teams don't run on some Jesus Christ figure walking in and promoting world peace.

Brawn wants to name the team with a Title Sponsor, he only used "Brawn" as a stop-gap until he got a main sponsor.

The 100 million Honda left him for this season is will eventually run out, and he needs someone to pay the bills.

Exactly. I can think of nothing better than a huge multi-billion pound brand doing the smart thing and jumping onboard. It benefits BOTH parties, as any good sponsorship deal should. Virgins stickers were on the cars before they got Pole. Branson said himself he said it would be excellent if they broke in to top five, and a even better if they got in to top 3.

Reality check anyone? Honda team was up for sale. Management buy-out happen, and newly formed Brawn GP was looking for sponsors, and they've found a major one - Virgin, who were also linked with buying Honda earlier in the year. Every buyer would be a 'opportunistic businessman', negativity towards Branson based on him investing in Brawn GP is utter nonsense.

I just think some people don't like Branson, it's not business, it's personal.

If it was Microsoft, Intel, or some other big name, no one here would be upset about it.

I think it will be a compromise if the change happens:

Virgin Brawn GP

Sir Richard has already called the car the Virgin BGP001 in the statement on brawngp.com

To have a change in the title of the team will require the other teams to ALL agree too....

Nothing against Virgin or Branson, I just don't like how he has handled this affair, waiting till they was topping the grid to jet over to sign a contract like some glory hunter, thats not saying you can't blame him, but....

It was signed before they topped the grid, but...

WHAT ON EARTH IS SPONSORSHIP IF IT'S NOT AN EXCHANGE OF MONEY FOR GLORY?

Would you rather someone LESS able to provide money sponsored Brawn? Perhaps AFTER they qualified?

Don't you dare forget that NOBODY ELSE this big has come forward before hand. Virgin is the FIRST major backer to do so.

SOME people really need to grow up and get over taking things like this so god damned personally.

Am I missing something?

A team looking for a sponsor... a businessman who owns a well known brand and has the financial means to plough a fair whack into said team... Is that not what EVERY team has?

Tell me one team who is not backed by either a single person with a large budget, or a company/group of people with a large budget.

So what if the car turns red overnight? Surely it mus be better than that hideous lime green effort.

And as for the name, if I was backing a team as number 1 sponser, then i would be looking at having my company name incorperated into the team name. Red Bull, anyone?

Hopefully it will just be a title sponsor name change. For example, the official name is "Scuderia Ferrari Malboro", but everyone refers to them just as Ferrari.
If Browns name changes to "Virgin Brown GP", i hope people will still just call it Brown. Please not Brown GP, just Brown.
