Trials:
Familiar face but can't put a name to it; a guess, Nigel Birkett?
The great Sammy Miller (the firmest handshake in all motorcycling . . . and curator of a pretty classy bike museum)
Dougie Lampkin
Tony Scarlett

MX:
Dave Thorpe (one of the nice guys of motocross . . . until my quad got in his way during a Weston Beach Race)
Noycey,
Don't know
Pure guess, Pete Mathia?

I remember World of Sport and the 'scrambling'! Dave Bickers ended up as a stuntman on Bond films and stuff. I liked Vic Eastwood. I rode a Greeves Hawkstone for about ten minutes until my hands were numb! Fit or what?

Surprised no-one has mentioned the TV programme 'Superbike Six' which was a competition I think in 1978 to find the best all round rider. Mick Andrews won. They couldn't compete in their own category so it was quite a laugh. Andrews won on the MT125 Honda single in the roadrace, Reg won the karting (???) Eddie Kidd didn't win anything, I think Phil Read was there with Ron Haslam, Some of the others were Michael Lee, Martin Lampkin, Malcolm Rathmell, maybe Bruce Cribb, anyway it was good fun.

Rats........... Bircher was my second choice , for the last one, thinking about it, he looks a bit tall for Tony Caig .

For my sins, even though ive raced since 1975, i never ever rode a Maico.

Which is probably why you're still riding!

I think Caig usually wore black and white (he certainly did as a schoolboy) because he was a Newcastle United fan - made him quite distinctive.

Did you ever ride at Bootle or Bassenthwaite or any NW Centre track, Phil?

I don't remember much about this event, but i wonder if anyone was there or has any photos, it was the MX GP that was held @ Ladies Mile in Horndean Hampshire. Oh forgot it was about 1974 ish.

Had another trawl through my boxes of pics and thought it was about time I put some off-road stuff back onto page 1.

Anyone identify any of this lot? All taken in Cumbria (Barfield, Fell Green and Whittas Park).

Pure guess work.

#2 Honda: Mayson Wear
#31 TT Yamaha: helmet vaguely familiar, but elbows too low for Roger Harvey. And I can't remember him riding a four stroke.

Remarkably close, Peter. Mayson Wear is actually the 61 Honda! Would you like to take a look at the TT yam again? ;) (It's not Mathia, LamboNZ)

Thanks for the video links Rennmax - excellent stuff.

No one going to guess t'others?

If it's Roger #31 then he's looking like an AMCA junior!

It is Roger. That TT wasn't a particularly competitive or forgiving ride, which might go some way to accounting for his style.

No, he doesn't look comfortable. Though this is pre-US invasion when they brought with them the elbows-up, "attack" style, which Harv adapted to and used very successfully on YZs.
Great character, great storyteller.
Doesn't he work for Honda these days?

Well, I think it's about time I dragged this oasis of muddiness back onto page 1 with some more photos.

Some riders for you to hazard a guess at - all taken in Cumbria during the 1980s

Not sure you'd get away with racing in a denim jacket these days....

And a couple of start shots, just because I like them. Mayson Wear, Don Brockbank and Norman Barrow to the fore in this one

Had to ask a friend.

Rob Andrews says he's the Yamaha rider on #112. Stunning setting, so Bootle, in Cumbria.

Well, he should know Peter! (and he's right, of course)

Venue for that one is Whittas Park, Bassenthwaite, 1983 and it's Alan Blood he's scrapping with.

Any of the others ring a bell? The chap on the 250 Honda (No.14) is a fairly well-known name.

Never got to many northern events. I'm trying to dredge the memory, putting riding kit brands to riders, but it's not working! Go on, who are they?

To be honest Peter, they're not all Northern.

Mark Bennett at Barfield in the British Championship support race

Haynes 4 stroke stalwart Paul Packham at Whittas Park

Perry Leask on the CR250 at Barfield

The Blood/Andrews duel we've covered already :)

Tony Caig, in his distinctive Newcastle United black and white outfit

I'll have to dig out some non-northerners for my next batch, though they will all be at Northern tracks as I never ventured past the M62!

i wonder if any off road guys can help me out with some info.

i have been given the chance to buy a maico 440 which needs a bit of work, are these bikes worth the investment?

ive heard they are a bit of a handful and not the easiest to get parts for?

any help would be appreciated, the bike is late 80s as far as i know.
