Hi all, I've just completed a two year restoration of a 1970 Elfin Type 500 Formula Vee and am about to apply for a Certificate of Description for Historic Log Book. I have been able to collect a large amount of history but have no photos of the car from 1970 to late 1971. In 1970 it was driven by Keith Poole, Ian Hill and Tom Jones. In 1971 it was driven by Ian Hill and Leo Anthony. The car was blue in colour and ran at times as number 41 and number 12. The photos I have from 1971 are of the car upside done at Calder when driven by Leo Anthony. Perhaps someone out there may have a photo or two that would help with it's history.

Cheers,
Des

You need to find Rod Gibb, who had pics in RCN in that period...

I see that Poole had a win at the July Mallala in a Stag Elfin... is that the car?

Thanks Ray, I'll see how I go tracing him. The problem with Keith Poole I'm sure you will agree is that he was always racing and in many cars, so its hard to know which is which. This car is actually the last ever type 500, built by Keith while he worked for Garry Cooper and as such is quite special. I have been able to track and speak to most of the drivers and recently had two of them , Leo Anthony & Damian Ridgeway, visit and relive their experiences. Leo's full name was Leo Anthony Fusinato but he dropped the Fusinato for family reasons.
Leo was a sensational driver and held the lap record for vees at Sandown for ten years, until the circut was changed.

Thanks for the help,
Des

The Lemm brothers might be able to help...

If they were taking photos at that time, they might have something... but if not, they might know where to get onto Rod Gibb.

The win I mention came in "Len Miller's Elfin"... Len Miller Motors was the entrant. Is that the car?

I have a video/dvd of the Nationals at Phillip Island with Damien Ridgeway driving won by Doug Angus. It's around 1977/78 Boy was that interesting then. A wet track, a bunch of vees charging down towards the now called Honda revision with the flaggies standing on the naturally wet grass on the edge of the circuit waving flags! Ian Lee (chequer 57) may know if the dvd's are still available. Slightly o/t but if there are any chassis photos of Elfin 500's floating around out there it would be nice to see also. I had to do some work on one recently and chassis photos were non existent.

Unprotected on the wet grass, what's more...

Those were super events, the Vee Nationals at the Island. Doug Angus really deserved that win too, he'd been working hard at winning all year. Anther winner worth recognising in that event was Dave Turnbull, who drove an Elfin too IIRC.

G'day Guys,

Sorry for jumping onto this thread, but was wondering if anyone has any photos of Doug Angus in his national winning Elfin NG?

I currently own and race this car but don't have any photos of it from back then.

Thanks.

James

Thanks again Ray, not sure about the entrant but all possible connections to explore. Most of what I have in terms of results have come from RCN and it still amazes me how often the racing took place back then and the detail in the reports, well done.

Thanks also Jacer, I'll talk to Chequer. Have you seen the two CDs of Vee history?

Cheers

James, my recollection of the events was that Doug Angus won the Nationals in a Nimbus...

G'day Ray,

Your are correct in a Nimbus in 76 & 77, but he also won in 81 & 82 in an Elfin NG.

Photos of the Elfin NG 8120 are suprising on www.fvee.org.au/nationals look down the page.

These are the photos that Doug scanned for me about two years ago.

Funny thing about 8120 there are two chassis going around with that number but yours is the Doug Angus one.

BTW the CD's have a stack of Doug Angus shots. Shot me an email and I'll send them to you

He is now, I spoke to him about three months ago working out when the first Poole built Scorpians came into being.

I think that was about 1987/88....... Andrew Reid, Cameron McConville and Dave Turnbull having the first 3 cars...... I stand to be corrected though....

Dave's car being bright "flourecent orange" I think that's what the colour was called....

Yep that's right Terry Southall has the Dave Turnbull's Scorpion KP01 and I was talking to Dave to see if it was pre 86 and thus eligable for Historics .... but it's 88 thus no cigar.

KP02 the one Daniel Orr used to win the Nationals in 94 is in Tassie with Noel Clark [greedy man has two Nationals Winning Cars now ;) ]

G'day Des, sorry that I don't have a shot of your type 500, but this one can give you some "period cues" - my best estimation is that this one is the prototype raced by Garrie Cooper and Bob Mills, having debuted on Boxing Day 1965 at Mallala, it was owned from new to this day by Bill Roberts. Elfin Works employee, Ron Lambert is seen behind the wheel out the front of Conmurra Avenue.

James, I can't help with Doug, but I wonder if anyone knows who the driver in this shot is & what the venue is. I suspect it's the first (Roberts) car as when Garrie ran it, the car did sport no.22 for a while......

I don't suppose it could be Eric Spehr, John Kenny or Bill Roberts himself?

Thanks indeed SJ, ( Spencer ? ). I've had the great pleasure over the past two years of getting to know Bill Roberts and having the opportunity to see his 500 anf 600. The last occasion was down your way at Haunted Hills hillclimb. ( Posted on Old Formula Vees In Australia thread ). The photos you are posting are great, keep it up.

The Eric Spehr Vee, I believe, was modified in the mid 80's by a guy by the name of Hatherley. (sp) I think his name was Ron (?) & his wife was Denise. They both ran in the NSW hillclimb chamionships during the 80's. It ran a 12a rotary engine. It was sold on to a guy in Sydney - and for the life of me I can't remember his name. I bought the car in 1988, replaced the 12a with a 13BPP rotary. My brother Jase bought it, sold it on & it is now in Newcastle running a 2.2 VW engine in Formula Libre. The only thing that looks like an elfin on this car is the fibreglass nose.

The Elfin with the Rotary engine was run by Ron Hammond in the late 90's in the NSW Hill Climb Championship. It too is on my list of Hill Climb car I'd love to see converted back to Historic Formula Vee's

The Elfin Register is a bit more specific though
Original Owner –Brian Pymble
Joe Lapp [NSW]
Richard Hatherly

When purchased by Hatherly it had been
converted to wishbone suspension with Rennmax uprights and a big
capacity VW engine

Hatherly fitted a Mazda rotary engine and used the
car in hillclimbs.

Subsequent owners were:
Ben Sellers [NSW]
Brad Goulding [NSW]
Jason Goulding [NSW]
Ron Hammond [NSW]
Eric Day [NSW]
Ben Durie/Grant Cook? [NSW]

after that not much new info

The Eric Spehr Elfin 500's path goes something like this
Eric Spehr [SA]
Indianapolis Speed Shop [SA]
Kevin Fisher [SA]
Robert Fox [SA]

Hi Kym,

Took me a while to work it out you are refering to EP012[013] first log booked in 1986.

EP012/[13] July 1986 Keith Poole [SA]
[93 - 97] Trevor Pound [SA]
[97 - 06] Andrew Holloway
[06 – James Parkinson [SA]

etc etc

I suggest you ask Trevor Pound (engman@optusnet.com.au) he may remember what colour it was when the bought it in 1993...

Last I saw that car it was green.

Regards,

Ian Lee

PS: If you have the log books any Amaroo or Oran Park meet we could have a crack at just need the dates.

I'm thinking that would be a different car, Greg, unless Poole owned it twice...

This is sixteen years earlier than he's shown as the owner.

Here is a pic of the Eric Spehr car driven by the man himself Easter 1971 at Collingrove. At that stage it had been modified somewhat.

From memory it was running a larger 1600 motor and improved induction. Looks like a pair of downdraft Webers.

The car that Des is asking about is Keith Poole's Elfin 500, not the later NG.

Have you contacted Keith Poole, Des? If you need his contact details, send me an email....greg@kirrapak.com
Also, if you want, I can scan the above W. Farm result sheet, and send it.

Cheers, Greg

Thanks Greg, I would love a scan of the results. My email is desp@davidnutter.com.au. I spoke to Keith a couple of years ago and have since emailed him with progress reports as the restoration took place. The same with Ian Hill who was instrumental along with Paul English in establishing the history of the car.

The only photos I can see of the proofs of that meeting is of Jason Bargwanna and the No.11 Mobil sponsored car (who I though may be Jamie McHugh) It was late in Lance Ruting's career and he was not into taking many photos and didn't get around the track much.

See below

Who ever is in the No.11 car they are pretty fast to be in front of Frank Haire and qualify on the grid for 2nd. I suspect that is Jansen Hannagan though, as he was travelling alot that year and won a heat (witho out Frank Haire in it) over in Perth later that year at the Nationals (thanks for Terry Walker's results.)
See http://www.terrywalk.../1993-part2.pdf

You also have a bit of struggle with Keith Poole's Vees he seems to not only owned many at one time but he let other people drive them. Around time your are looking at he started building Vee's outside the Elfin Factory the KPV (that I assume he built in built in 86) and then the Scorpions (from 88 onwards).

Ian

Just remembered that I raced against Keith at the 1987 nationals at the Calder WTC meeting that had the thunderdome and circuit combined. It was plain white from what I can remember. I have a dvd of the race but as usual I've loaned it out and it hasn't come back yet. There were fleeting shots of it.

thanks kym
PS what do you know about the 12/13 story,I believe mine is #13 but being bad luck they just made it #12 but i think there is another #12 out there.

There are two "EP012"s your car and Paul Tucker's. Paul's car is recognised as EP012 and your car is the other EP012, it is thought the chassis plate was mistamped with 12. Please note there are not 13 Elfin NG EP's there are 8. The first 4 were made in 84 (to get some cash flow at Elfin) and the last 4 made in late 85. The No.13 is reference the the chassis made under the Edmondson Porter banner.

Historic is possible as a run on if construction was started before the end of 1985 as was the case with Daniel Brando's sister Elfin NG (EP10), I'll provide you with Daniel's contact details if you wish.

Umm not sure we know of 8 Vees (EP001-4 & EP010,12,(12/13) + one other that is supposed to be wrecked) and 2 Formula Fords (EP06 & EP09)

The Elfin Crusaders which were made from 86 onwards were all E cars.

Regards,

Ian

Someone earlier was looking for Rod Gibb - contact him via the Sporting Car Club of SA where he is currently President and is using Rodney rather than Rod
