Chapman's cap

- Did he do this from "day 1" when his cars won (i.e. Innes Ireland's first win at the Glen in 1961?) or, if not, when did it start and was it spontaneous?
- Were there any embarrassments (did he mistakenly throw it when Emerson came "second" at Mosport in 1973 or did he miss any wins, maybe Ronnie's last-lap win at Kyalami in 1978?)
- Did he throw at Indy in 1965? And similar to above, in 1966 when Jimmy came "second"?
Are there any other renowned win celebrations? The nearest thing I can think of is Ken Tyrrell's abobe head handshake which I've seen a few times on film clips / pictures

according to pete lyon's in autosport , yes he did, 'high into the air.. with a gesture of real exhuberance'. The next bit of the report goes on to describe the official holding the chequered flag looking on in bemusement whilst waiting for Peter Revson's McLaren to wave it at... and the rest of the field 'pummelling' the cap as it lay there in the middle of the track.
quite a nice little picture really - and im sure ive read elsewhere of other occassions where 'the cap' became a target for the rest of the field at the end....

ps btw the cap was thrown at kyalami, its on the tv footage.

just before the start Chapman made them take a few litres out of Andretti's car to save weight. Mario was leading the race but with 3 laps to go he had to make a pitstop to refuel and finally finished 7th a lap behind. Ronnie Peterson took the lead from Patrick Depailler on the last lap for a thrilling victory and duly had Chapman's cap thrown. In his autobiography Mario says that he was so annoyed about the refuelling that he was strongly tempted to run over the cap!

just checked it out, VERY deliberate! must have been well p*ss*d off at having lost the lead so late in the race with a slow puncture and the last thing he would have wanted to see was the cap being thrown with gusto!. The coverage goes on to show 'parc ferme', Jody can be seen in the background looking 'grumpy'...

I wonder when the last on-track celebration took place in F1? Did Chapman go on to the track when De Angelis won in Austria in '82?
Certainly, some Renault personnel were on the track to greet Jean-Pierre Jabouille at Dijon in '79.

I think the Leyton House team celebrated with similar exuberance at Paul Ricard in 1990 for the win that nearly was.

Mario was in 1st place for the first 20 laps of this race. Never after that. Depailler lead from lap 64 until the last lap (78) when Peterson took the lead about 1km from the end.

It went further in time than that... I can recall Lotus mechanics were on the track to greet Senna when he won in Portugal in '85. Afterwards I think they finally banned the practice.

Made of black corduroy, it was pretty neat, but I have no idea where it is now... Probably at the bottom of some cardboard box in my Mum's house.

Ed, I still have mine! Got it in the early 70s as a gift, and still wear it occasionally. But I only wear it around knowing people, as the non-enthusiasts all think I am wearing a Greek fisherman's cap. It does have a tab inside of it labeling it as a "Jackie Stewart Cap". I always thought that Chunky was wearing something very similar, if not the same.Originally posted by SEdward
I once bought an article that was marketed as a "Jackie Stewart Cap" in the early 1970s. Very similar to Chapman's artifice.

There was almost an accident, because Mansell, who was following Senna, had to take evasive action.
