Trying to figure out how many Renault RS01 were built.

I believe RS01 is the actual chassis number of the first car, as it has also been refered to as the Renault RS.
I have reference to a RS02 also.

The next in line were the RS10 series, (chassis RS10, 11, 12 and 14), before the RE20 appeared.

So the question is how many of the initial 'non-ground effect' RS01 were built?

In the book "Alpine & Renault" it states that there were 4 chassis made of the RS 01.
Number 2 was Jabouille's favorite.

Which beggars the question how many of the Alpine test car that preceeded it existed? I always thought 1 but there were lots of different bodywork variations that maybe point to there being more than one chassis. How close was the RS01 to the test car in terms of design?

rvbasten => Thanks for sharing the information.

ghinzani => Yes, the bodywork variations, might suggest that more than one chassis were built. Neither of the bodywork variations I have seen, looks like the RS01.
Of course they could still share similarities hidden by the bodypanels.

If you want to know more about the Renault RS01 and the development of the car, then I recommend the book I referred earlier:

It has all the info and some exclusive pictures of how they built the car.
It is a very good read.

One other thing, early in 82 around the time of the Casablanca summit Renault revealed that when they first came into F1 in 77 they had intended running one car themselves and supplying one other team. That team was Tyrell, however they were only looking to supply 1 car which is possibly why they turned down the chance, although the given reason was that Ken didnt think it would be any good. Imagine an RS01 in the hands of a private team...
