When was the first ever motorsport event and was it a race, rally or a hillclimb?

It was a gymkhana-type event. A sort of modern pentathlon, with a road element, a hauling element and a ploughing test. A contest between steam engines in Wisconsin in July 1878. The winner was an Oshkosh driven by F. Shomer and A. M. Farrand, as it finished the "race" element from Green Bay to Madison. The only other competitor was a Green Bay built by its driver E. P. Cowles.

At least that's what the Guinness Book fo Car Facts And Feats states. I've never found another reference to it.

Search BB wouldn't have turned up The birthplace of racing

For a more conventional answer than ensign's one you could go to sites by different TNF members; Dennis David, Leif Snellman, and Quintin Cloud. If I've done the links right with the new software that is.
