Nasty rumours floating around that Suppo was "asked" to leave because he was making unwanted advances on a certain riders wife. Don´t know how true it is.

I hope Uccio dealt with him swiftly

Was that something that made that driver very tired, distressed, almost chronic fatigue? ;)
Joking of course, but on the other hand - why not? That would not be the first time something like that happened.

Strange thing with Suppo is that he got criticised for not handling the PR side of Stoner's absence, and now he's been appointed as the marketing director at Honda. A bit strange that. I wonder too what he doesn't like about Rossi, as anyone would realise that Ducati and Rossi need to be together at least for one season. Except of course Honda or Yamaha. ;)

Stoner pulled out a flyer near the end, Spies close to Toseland but I wonder if he has yet to get the Bridgestone front tyre "trick" that Colin found but James never did?

Looking forward to the 250cc practice to see William Dunlop out, watch out for him no.33. Looks like he got something similar to his uncle anyway!

Obviously not expecting anything, he is racing the bike that took him to wins at the North West 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix this year.

Keep er lit William!

Looking through the 250 grid William will be very lucky not to be last in all honesty, his bike is a privateer amongst the privateers!

Wow. Less than 2 tenths off of Toseland in his first outing on the Yamaha MotoGP bike. Thats not bad.

And his first time riding on the spec Bridgestones, I might add. :)

He wasn't trying to go fast today--just feeling things out. I'm very curious to see how he goes tomorrow. I'm going to go out on a limb and say he outqualifies Toseland.

Yes it was so stupid, when there was more cheaper methods they could use to slow the 1000s down.

Yes and get rid of this stupid fuel limit. Let them use another gallon or litre of fuel, it is not as if motorcycles are causing most of the pollution.

As for BS, this entire weekend is like a test session for him. He will continue to improve, and as always the last few tenths will be the hardest to find. Even if he matches Colin Edwards by Sunday it doesn't necessarily mean great things for his future.

Wait, I just looked at the time difference between Ben and Colin again, and it's already only .9. So I'll say it'll be closer to half a second tomorrow, maybe a little less.

But how should they slow the bikes down? It is just a question, I do not expect any revolutionary answer, but the speed is a problem. The dilemma is that they have to be the fastest bike on the planet, otherwise it loses it's status, but you can go into a shop and buy a bike that is insanely fast without much hassle. This was not a problem in the seventies and looking back at how it was will not solve any problems. Remopve the electronics and the bikes will be only marginally slower, in top speed, but immensely more difficult to ride and would will see a lot of nasty accidents. Maybe it is possible to have a ECU that gives any engine a fixed torque and hp curve, regardless of any extra power the engine is able to produce. If that was possible, and the limits was set quite low, it would become cheap to build engines again. I don't know, but unless they do something they will have to go down to 600cc soon.

Raising the minimum weight would be a thing to consider, especially when it comes to corner speeds.

Not a bad start from Ben but not great either. One would hope that he would end up the fastest Superbike rider by the time the race is over on Sunday and I think he's still got a great shot at it. We'll have to see if he can catch a tow in qualifying to help his grid position, something that he hasn't really had to do.. um.. ever.

CD, he did OK--he feels really comfortable. He was making no attempt at all to do fast laps today--it's like, he did an hour's worth of installation laps. But seriously--he kind of did. He's basically on Vale's bike, and used Vale's setup today (they're exactly the same height, which is unusual these days), and he'll start making tweaks tomorrow.

I don't know if he'll be faster than Nicky, but he's already faster than Vermeulen, and Toseland will be done and dusted tomorrow. Colin will be a more difficult proposition--until April or May. ;)

Are they really the same height? On the Superbike he looks huge and in your fellas pic his arms seem very long. I'll watch on Sunday, maybe it is just his riding style that looks odd.

Corner speed or straight line speed?
I don't see a problem with straight line speeds, at least I've never seen anyone complain, and there are very few points in the calendar where they really get to max out and top 200mph. So they could very easily have bigger engines but also ban carbon fibre/exotic brake materials. That would keep the straight line speed in controle, I guess, given the greater braking distances. As for the corner speeds, you just need slightly less grippy tyres. These are spec, but they are also the best ever. As far as I know, Bridgestone took no step back from 2008 to 2009, they just stopped where they were.

I'm no expert, but I think it is possible to keep speeds at bay and run bigger engines.

Top speed is not a huge problem that can be done fairly easy, but its cornering speeds. Colin Edwards said riding a GP bike is so much more physical that a superbike. Adding weight might help that. Thinner tires to :p

Also does anyone know if Ben is on the same bike as Colin and James?

Interesting fact: Ben's pole time from Valencia on the R1 would have put him 4th fastest in practice ahead of Valentino. The commentators did mention that it was windy today but it still makes you think that there's gotta be more to come from him.

No. He is on Rossi's bike.

F1J, Vale and Ben are the same height, but Ben is much bigger physically. Vale's so skinny I do believe he has to run around in the shower to get wet. I'd post a pic from the press conference, but the web in this media center is so slow that we'll all be old and grey before I can link to it. If you go to Motogp.com, there's a photo of all of them standing up after the Thursday press conference--Ben and Vale look like they've invaded Lilliput.

Yeah, it's embarrassing when on the podium they have to still get on tip toes to kiss the girl giving them the flowers and trophy

Yep, as people mentioned, Spies against Toseland today and then against Colin depending on how well he gets on. I think the top 4 might be interesting too. Going to be a really fun weekend. Considering the new tyre Spies is doing very well, will be interesting to see his final performance by Tuesday.

Yes, we need to go back to 990cc and dump the electronics. Man against machine. When riders go to the MotoGP they should be saying they are blown away and overawed, that has been watered down recently with them saying it is just hard to ride fast, not hard full stop. Do you see where I am coming from?

One good thing about raising the minimum weight is that big riders would get less penalty. They would be a smaller percentage of the total weight. Small guys really have a huge advantage at the moment and I am not sure it is so good for the image if only Pedrosa sized riders had a chance to win races. Nothing wrong with small riders, but it should not be a mandatory attribute when someone is looking for the future WDC.

About removing electronics, I don't think it is possible, they would be slower than WSB and the whole balance would be upset. I would like it though, big, torquey, engines and no electronics. Would be beautiful!

Great Qualification - Ben Spies has shown plenty good luck to him for the race - but Stoner - he's so fast, the way he was throwing that Ducati through the corners is impressive! Race win I think.
