Yes, thank you Graham.

Anyone ever seen this colour of swingarm on other period Yamahas? Or know why it may have been changed?

Just thought I'd say Hi to anyone who remembers me and confirm 'twas me who won the 350's in 1980 and the 500cc Production in 1979. I have lots of cherished memories from those Bemsee meetings and fondly remember Kenny Pinks and many of the others on this forum. Great times, great memories. Nigel Corby.

Does anyone have contact details for Peter Weale who posted earlier in this thread? I have tried to PM him, but no luck.

Thanks

Stephen

Stephen, thank you for the enquiry; I have had time off during the Christmas hols and don't look at the computer at home.
Am now back at work and would be very pleased to chat about racing, especially during the seventies period.

Graham, have not seen that b&w pic before. Really nice, thank you.

Best wishes, Peter Weale.

Stephen, this is a standard TD2 swinging arm and is just painted red as I had some red aerosol; no other reason.

Hi Mike, how are you?.

I was looking through the forum for anybody that may have results from Bemsee club meetings from 1980 to 81.
I think most of mine were in my dads camper van when we sent it to the scrap yard!!.

Going back to your question about Bemsee champions I thought 79 was Kenny Pinks, and 80 was Nigel Corby.

Best regards
Paul

Hi Paul. I'm doing good thanks. Afraid I don't have any complete Bemsee results. All I do have is a book listing my own results and fastest laps for every race I did until '83.

Having moved house on average once every two years since then including changing countries I don't have a lot of stuff left.

I do have a few MCN and MCW cuttings with the results in though. Are we allowed to post them or will we end being hung drawn and quartered by the copyright police???

Fire ahead, son. You've already attributed their origin. When you're grabbing pics from sites and flogging them or using them for pet moneymaking projects, you can expect to get rolled, and rightly so. But clippings from mags of the day are fair game. The Copyright Police just had a swing at a bloke in the car forum over a link to a sound bite off a 1966 record that's no longer available, and had their toenails clipped.

It's on page 2, entitled Sound Track to the 1966 Le Mans... just had a quick peek, and it's kicked along a bit since I last had a look. Be interested in your take on it Gra, in view of what happened earlier in the year.

Slightly off piste Mike but I am restoring a Morris Marina and a Yellow Transit that have your name in the log book. Do you know how the Marina roof got so full of filler? Also, am looking for some Corsair wheels and a Formula Ford chassis last seen buried in a vegetable patch?

Two names come to mind, Graham Marchant and Peter? Darby. Did they become bemse champions? think the later was a king of brands and was in the 87 transatlantic.

Dommieracer, do you mean Pete Dalby ? IIRC he got the ride in the transatlantic for being Champion of Brands.

I recall reading or being told a good story about a "mod" his mechanics supposedly did to his GSXR750 for the transatlantic. They saw the factory airboxes that were on the american bikes and decided to rig up their own version. But not having the resources of Suzuki Japan to call on, they fashioned their own using a shoebox & gaffa tape :rotfl:

I'm not sure if it's true or not, but it always brings a smile to my face thinking about it.

Mark.

I can confirm it's true, I saw it.

I remember at the time thinking that he might go quite well as he was a bit of a Brands specialist and a tidy rider, but then you saw the absolute difference between a good rider on a good bike and a works rider on a works bike.

And hi Mark, seems a long time ago that we were both racing in the Bemsee 4 stroke 500 class.

Hi Desmophile,

Blimey, you've got me worried as you obviously remember me from way back - Bemsee in the mid to late 80's ? You're right, it seems like a lifetime ago now :rotfl:

I've been wracking my brains to try and work out who you are, but given your username I can only recall one Ducati rider (500 Pantah ?) from that time I knew in the paddock - Colin Carey ? Apologies if I'm wrong and you'll have to put me out of my misery :)

Mark.

Paul, I have all the Bemsee result sheets still from 1981, some from 1980 and 1982 as well. It's great to see some old names and great photo's on here!

I raced an LC in 250 Production in 1981 and won the Championship that year, I can't quite remember who won the other Championships that year though.

I'm still enjoying my racing, but in the US now on a Buell 1125R and a Manx Norton.

Pat Mooney.

Hi all. This thread was originally a purely selfish idea but maybe it could be interesting for others.

Back in 1981 I was lucky enough to win the Bemsee 350 championship. The trophy was a magnificent shield with all the past winners names on. These were some great names including IIRC, Read, Hailwood, Minter? My dad took a snap at the time to record these great names together with my own but the photo has done what most of these things tend to, ie disappear.

Perhaps it could be fun to fill in the blanks. Here is what I am sure of (not a lot I know but it leaves lots of space for the rest of you :D )

BMCRC 350 Champions

1980 Keith Huewen
1981 Mike Capon

I seem to remember the 1971 350 winner was Bob Bentley

he was my nextdoor neighbour and responsible long with Alan Lee for me getting into racing

If it helps i was 500cc Bemsee Champ in 1976 i think Barry Woodlands was 350 Champion but have no idea about the other classes

Bernie Frost was runner up in the 500cc and came close to beating me but i had him off at Riches ? could have been Russell's?Snet which helped my cause no end especially since he damaged a shock in the crash and i damaged one in a later race and Bernie gave me the good shock he was left with.

These forums are great,

Hi all, I can add one more, I won the 250 championship in 1972 on a Barton Engineering TD1C. I remember how thrilled I was to win a trophy with Hailwoods name on it in only my second season of racing. Other names that spring to mind are Alan Dunscombe on the Camp Ducati, John Riley, Mike Shoesmith, Guiseppe Gorozzo, Geoff Went, there are more that I've forgotten they will come back to me!

Also remember the 3rd place trophies , an ashtray!

Wow an ashtray, i won a national at Snetterton and received £10 and a very small rose bush which died a week later,.

Also won the Bemsee Ben Ball 500 race at Brands reverse circuit and got a beautiful goblet about 5 inches tall and saw them in Tesco's a week later for half of the race entry fee, he he.

But the worst one i NEVER got was the Mallory champion trophy. The award ceremony was at the last meeting of the year at Mallory and when i stepped up to collect the trophy i was handed a really expensive trophy about 2 foot tall but the person handing it to me whispered in my ear "This isn't the real one Bill, Phil Mellor hasn't handed the real back yet from last year, we will get it shortly and get it to you, give us this one back in a few minutes"..

I saw Phil Mellor about 30 minutes later and spoke to him about the trophy and he said , "let me guess they told you i hadn't handed the trophy back, that is what they told me to and i haven't received it yet, i don't think it exists."

Never did get it.

It will probably turn up with the crank Derek Chatterton still owes me.

Please understand i am typing this chuckling.

Wow, the Harley! I contacted Ted Pratt as I was desperate to ride the XR750, they were unavailable at the time but he said I could have a go on the two stroke, and I knew the mechanic really well as he was local to me. So I entered what i think it was a top national or international meeting at Brands, never having even practiced on it, and to be honest the handling was pretty horrendous, each time you shut the throttle the whole bike shook, worse than a patter. The performance wasn't too bad, but no better than a Yam, it just didn't instill any confidence whatsoever, so this was a one one off, It could have been sorted out but would only have on par with the competition so there seemed no point. I did write to the factory to try and buy an XR, but they would only sell me one of these! Really glad to see the photo, thanks very much.

Ahh...Keith Huewen. my racing hero.

A real racer, a hard case without doubt and a potential winner who never really had the machinery he deserved in the British Suzuki team, overshadowed by Barry in '83 and hamstrung in his best potential years '84/85 by a **** private RS500 which almost did him in financially IIRC due to gearbox and brake failures.

I remember Motorcycle news misquoting Keith as him saying  he was quicker than Barry and deserved better machinery, he actually was quicker at that point in time and probably did deserve the best machines.

Keith told me just after the bad quote that he never did say that but by then the damage was done with Suzuki, obviously Barry was highly thought of in that camp.

Who knows how far Keith could have gone had he retained a full works ride for the next few seasons, all the way possibly.

Hi Mike

I believe Steve Coker won the 350 open championship in the mid-eighties, but don't remember the exact year, as I had disappeared off the scene by then.

I was trying to win the 1300 proddie championship in 81, started off well at the beginning of the season but my Honda started twisting cranks from June onwards and I didn't have a very helpful bank manager!!!

Interesting reading this thread, as mentioned elsewhere on social media I am putting together a searchable club history database that will provide photos and programs with some results going back to early 50's. Also stories and photos of notable events of the club. It won't be a quick process I am currently working on 1978 programs.
