Hi all,

My pet project for the last few years has been to collect every piece of information I can find on the World Superbike series in what I consider to be its golden era, 1990 to 1999. I've finally got all the timesheets available and compiled complete and (hopefully) accurate entry lists for every race. Now that this is done, I'm aiming to make profiles outlining the careers of as many riders as possible. Being a stickler for accuracy, this includes the local wildcard riders, some of whom never even qualified for their only race. I'm also trying to find a picture of every single one of them, in each race they entered. This isn't much of a problem since I have all the races and qualifying sessions on tape. What I'm really looking for is the following:

Birth and/or death dates
Birth places
Races entered outside World Superbikes
Portrait photos
Any other racing photos

For as many riders as possible. It's a huge amount to ask (344 riders entered the series between '95 and '99!) but I figured if there was anywhere on the internet I could find obscure information, it was here. ;) I've attached a list of the aforementioned 344 riders. Any information or photos would be greatly appreciated, particularly for the less familiar names.

Riders spreadsheet: 1995 to 1999

The point of all this is for the website I've set up to put together all this information. I'll give full copyright details for the photos provided, wherever possible, and will only use the information anyone provides with their permission.

Sounds like a ridiculous task, I know, but hopefully some of you lads can help me out. :)

You can find photographs of nearly all Austrian riders in the Worls Superbike Championship on my website (www.motorsportstatistik.com). Maybe this helps in your research.

Hi, I have several photo's from Superbike rounds I attended , especially Canada 1990 and Austria 1990.
At the moment I don't know how to scan these into my computer. I used to take portait photo's as well as action shots.

I would think I can help you out some more with this, but at the moment I can’t get the file download to work. Is it still working properly? Maybe I chose a bad time to try?

Looks like it's broken, maybe Mediafire is down.

Try this one: WSB Rider Checklist 1994 - 1999

Also, to Helmut: May I use your rider photos on my site? I'll give the proper copyright on them and add a link to your website as well.

OK, I’ve looked through the list and already found some info in my records that you don’t have. The last three are included because the place of birth contradicts what you have. John Reynolds is there because in his autobiography he admits that he changed his age by two years at some point. I’m not sure which is right for Ray Stringer:

rider - nat - dob - birthplace
Alan Carter - GBR - 19/08/1964 - Halifax, ENG
Alex Vieira - FRA - 14/12/1956 - Vila Nova de Ouren, POR
Dean Ashton - GBR - 24/04/1967 -
Helmut Bradl - GER - 17/11/1969 -
Ian Simpson - GBR - 21/08/1970 -
Jeffry de Vries - NED - 04/09/1964 -
John Reynolds - GBR - 27/06/1963 - Nottingham, ENG
Malcolm Campbell - AUS - 1953 -
Martin Wimmer - GER - 11/10/1957 - Munich, GER
Mike Hale - USA - 14/12/1972 -
Peter Graves - GBR - 06/06/1966 -
Ray Stringer - GBR - 17/11/1962 -
- or - 17/11/1963 -
Rich Oliver - USA - 04/08/1961 -
Takahiro Sohwa - JPN - 21/09/1965 -
Terry Rymer - GBR - 28/02/1967 - Folkestone, ENG
Tom Kipp - USA - 17/11/1968 - Willoughby, Ohio, USA
Virginio Ferrari - ITA - 19/10/1952 - Pellegrino Parmense, ITA

Brian Morrison - GBR - - Kirkcaldy, SCO
Carl Fogarty - GBR - - Blackburn, ENG
Jamie Whitham - GBR - - Huddersfield, ENG

Good stuff, thanks. I did a quick search on Ray Stringer and the only date of birth I found was 1963, on the JPS Norton website, so I'll stick with that unless a better source says otherwise.

I would think someone here would know the date of birth for Mark Farmer. Motorsport Memorial gives the year as 1963, as well as the details of his unfortunate early death: http://www.motorspor...php?db=b&n=2163

OK, I now have some new/updated info on various AMA riders. I checked more than one source on Edwards and it looks like you have his DOB slightly wrong. Also, Crevier with different place of birth to your list, and Corser included only for the additional NSW info. Unfortunately, conflicting year data for Mike and Mike, but an old AMA media guide might be most reliable - it has 72 for Hale and 65 for Smith:

Al Salaverria - USA - 10/08/1969 - San Francisco, Calfornia, USA
Colin Edwards - USA - 27/02/1974 - Conroe, Texas, USA
David Sadowski - USA - 28/07/1963 - Bethesda, Maryland, USA
Doug Toland - USA - 02/09/1962 - Long Beach, California, USA
James Randolph - USA - 15/06/1970 - Marin, California, USA
Larry Pegram - USA - 05/09/1972 - Columbus, Ohio, USA
Mat Mladin - AUS - 10/03/1972 - Camden, New South Wales, AUS
Michael Barnes - USA - 21/10/1968 - Norwalk, Connecticut, USA
Miguel DuHamel - CAN - 26/05/1967 - Lasalle, Quebec, CAN
Mike Hale - USA - 14/12/1971 or 14/12/1972 - Dallas, Texas, USA
Mike Smith - USA - 28/11/1965 or 28/11/1966 - Canton, Georgia, USA
Pascal Picotte - CAN - 23/12/1969 - Granby, Quebec, CAN
Rich Oliver - USA - 04/08/1961 - Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
Steve Crevier - CAN - 18/06/1965 - Montreal, Quebec, CAN
Takahiro Sohwa - JPN - 21/09/1965 - Osaka, JPN
Troy Corser - AUS - 27/11/1971 - Wollongong, New South Wales, AUS

Thanks for your help everyone, the list is slowly filling up. Did we ever find confirmation of Bar Affendi/Effendi's name? I've got two sources, one lists him as Affendi Bar, and the other as Bar Effendi, though I don't trust the second one so much as there are rather a lot of spelling errors.

Incidentally, I had an email from Pentti Tolonen earlier today, he raced at Donington and Hockenheim in 1990. Always nice to hear from people involved in the series.

Great photo Gary, it's almost impossible to get pics of the privateers. Got any more photos of minor riders from that meeting, or any other WSB races for that matter?

Now there's someone I never thought I'd see a photo of! Have you got one of Jacques Guenette Jr.? I was never sure of his bike number, the source I have says #999 but I never believed that. A photo might just convince me!

Wonderful stuff, thanks a bunch Gary. I've just had a quick look through my photos and the riders I do have pictures of from Mosport 90 are Roche, James, Mertens, Phillis, Merkel, Monti and Falappa. Not as many as I'd thought, though I have got two very small photos of Cornwell and Picotte. Still, anything you've got is greatly appreciated!

Thanks very much Gary, photos from the early 90s are hard to come by and you've helped me out a lot. You can send them in a PM if you like, I'll get them later today. We can discuss the other rounds you were at as well. :)

Got some identification issues here. Looking through the timesheets there are a couple of riders with just an initial for a first name, and I was wondering if anyone could help get the names of them.

Simon Cheung (MAL) - 1991, Shah Alam
Gerald Suetsch (GER) - 1991, Hockenheim
Thomas Stocker (GER) - 1991, Hockenheim
Andreas Moeller (GER) - 1992, Hockenheim
Marc Deville (BEL) - 1992, Spa
T. Mackenhauer - 1992, Mugello
Karel Caesar (CZK) - 1993, Brno
Tomáš Katz (CZK) - 1993, Brno
Jon Steinar Vivelid (NOR) - 1993, Anderstorp
Julian Recuenco Bernal (ESP) - 1993, Monza

All of these riders DNQ'd at the races they entered, except Cheung who scored 21st and 17th. I don't know their nationalities either so the names and which races they entered are all I have to go on, I presume they'd be listed in the the race programmes but I've not got any of them.

This seems correct, I've just read a few articles about Belgian races from 1991 which list him in company with people like Eddy Baud'huin, Michel Simeon and Richard Hubin, all of whom also entered for Spa 1992.

In case it matters to your profiles, Al Salaverria is making a return to professional and club racing this year. He's been riding a Ducati 1098R owned by the same guy that ran some of his AMA efforts. I guess he plans to run the west coast AMA events as well as going after the AFM Formula Pacific title. That will be tough though, as he missed the first round when the gearbox went out on the Friday prior to the race.

I’ve looked at some Pro Superbike information I have and one of your names is also listed there as Gerald Sütsch. Also mentioned: Andreas Moller/Möller, and Thomas Stocker is shown as aged 23 in 1992.

1992 Pro Superbike entry list data:
Thomas Stocker, Marushin-Steuck-Mo-Racing-Team, Suzuki
Gerald Sütsch, Roadrunner Racing Team, Kawasaki
Andreas Möller, Team Mo-Yamaha-Wegner, Yamaha

It took a while but I've now got what I think is a comprehensive list of everyone who entered a race in the 1990s. There are 741 names so naturally a lot of them are without details. Here's the latest version of the spreadsheet, if anyone can help out with birth dates etc. it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the additions so far!

It looks like you’ve been busy.

Well, I’ve checked some sources and have some data to add. Some of this is from a 1989 Eurolantic event programme, where it gives home town instead of place of birth. Sometimes they mean the same thing:

rider - nat - dob - place
Johan van Vaerenbergh - BEL - 07/09/1963 - (Home town: Keerbergen, BEL)
Juan Garriga - ESP - 29/03/1963 - Barcelona, ESP
Kevin Magee - AUS - 16/07/1962 - Horsham, Victoria, AUS
Michael Galinski - GER - 10/02/1959 - (Home town: Dinslaken, GER)
Mike Baldwin - USA - 15/01/1955 - Pasadena, California, USA
Patrick Igoa - FRA - 08/03/1959 - Anglet, FRA
Paul Iddon - GBR - 27/09/1957 - ?
Peter Rubatto - GER - 04/11/1955 - (Home town: Meckenbeuren, GER)
Raymond Roche - FRA - 21/02/1957 - Ollioules, FRA
Rob McElnea - GBR - 12/12/1959 - Scunthorpe, ENG
Roger Burnett - GBR - 02/03/1960 - Brigg, ENG
Ron Haslam - GBR - 22/06/1956 - Langley Mill, Notts, ENG
Tim Bourne - GBR - 24/10/1960 - (Home town: Ashford, Kent, ENG)
Trevor Nation - GBR - 10/03/1959 - West Newton, ENG

Ernst Gschwender - Home town: Munich

Ray Stringer's dob is 17/11/62

I also have a decent sized picture of Jon Cornwell from the WSB round in the early 1990's if that's any use

Thanks for those, nice to know Simon Cheung's full name at last.

I think the unknown B. Recuenco could be Spanish rider Julian Recuenco Bernal but I'm not sure on that. Any ideas?

I don't know if it's any help but I have some photos from the early 90's WSB

I might have a Malcolm (wally) Campbell pic from donington 89 if I can find it, and a Roger Burnett Durex Suzuki from 1990. Possibly a Steve Hislop from 89
Terry Rymer in loctite yamaha 91 and Pepsi Galp yamaha 93, along with his Pepsi Galp team mate who rode the odd race in 93 Pedro Baptista from Portugal
Also have some Robert Holden rc30 pics from 1990 although these are from the TT but he rode a few WSB rounds
I'll have a search for any others from that era

If you IM me your email if you are interested I'll forward them on

Regards

Colin

Regards

Colin

If anyone's interested, I managed to fill in all the gaps in my records regarding riders' names. Here are the ones I was missing:

Simon Cheung (MAL) - 1991, Shah Alam
Gerald Suetsch (GER) - 1991, Hockenheim
Thomas Stocker (GER) - 1991, Hockenheim
Andreas Moeller (GER) - 1992, Hockenheim
Marc Deville (BEL) - 1992, Spa
Thomas Mackenhauer (SWE) - 1992, Mugello
Karel Caesar (CZK) - 1993, Brno
Tomáš Katz (CZK) - 1993, Brno
Jon Steinar Vivelid (NOR) - 1993, Anderstorp
Julian Recuenco Bernal (ESP) - 1993, Monza

While expanding my records to include the first two years of the series, I came across a couple of gaps:

1989

Paul Ricard - Greek entry Satis Skourtas only competed in practice, what was his entry number?

Hockenheim - Missing first names for the following riders:
U. Caluori (SUI)
T. de Klerk (???)
M. Grein (GER)
H. Holder (GER)
W. Friedl (GER)

Any ideas?

Who hasn't heard of Martin Grein?

I believe his Daddy funded his European racing seasons to keep him away from the family business - lovely lad, but not a great pilot.

Lot of stories but, unfortunately, most of them actionable

Hi everyone,

I'm putting together some statistics regarding podium finishers in WSBK races, but I am missing birth dates for two riders: Yukiya Oshima and Yves Brisson. Oshima is listed in the Sugo 1988 program as being 23 years old, which would place his birth date in 1964 or 1965, and I have no information on the Canadian Yves Brisson.

Does anyone here know when these two riders were born?
