This is the race history of Maserati 200SI, chassis number #2427. Any corrections, additions, eye-pokes etc. are very wellcome. While I do have a lot of contemporaray pictures (some privided by Archie Means´sone) I am of course looking for additional ones (for which I would of course gladly pay). Please note that I have omitted three races in July 57 which the John Fitch website credits to #2427 while in fact Fitch raced a 150S and a 300S on these occasions (these latter facts and other information were brought to my knowledge by John de Boer and Willem Oosthoek). No, it was owned by Vincent Andrus or the Andrus family.

Although Fitch raced it for him, chassis # 2457 was actually owned by Vincent Andrus, a curator with the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.

The second owner of the car was J.J. Packo of Fort Lauderdale. He really went by J.J. and his first name was Joe, not John. He was born in Ohio of Hungarian ancestry. J.J. stopped racing after Boca Raton 1959 when his first child was born. He worked for NASA at the time and later became the inventor and patent holder of Cryo-Chem, the self-sealing refrigerants. He died in 2000.

There are two period photos of the car in the upcoming Birdcage book.

Today I received my copy of the new birdcage book by Willem Oosthoek. As Jerry Entin had announced in post #4 there are two pictures of #2427 in it: one is a colour picture of Fitch racing it in September 1957 in Watkins Glen. The car is painted red since it was repainted in white/blue only for the Bahamas races in Deecmber. The other picture shows Dan Gurney racing #2427 in Cuba in February 1960. This came really as a surprise to me, but as Willem pointed out to me today the car was loaned by owner J.J. Packo to his friend Lucky Casner, the team owner ofthe Camoradi racing team who had Dan Gurney racing it when the anticipated new birdcage did not materialize in time. There is also a very nice picture of Gurney racing #2427 in Tom Burnside´s "American Racing".

BTW: The book is fantastic with lots of unpublished colour pictures!
