I don't see this as a source of concern and given the constantly shrinking ability of these mags to produce anything new to say it is hardly surprising.

Latest edition landed yesterday folks!!!!! How's that for expediency? A great issue, "Lunch with Richard Attwood" bringing back so many memories of his F1 and sportscar drives, and informing me of his early FJ career, which I knew little about, I had forgotten that 2nd place at Monaco in the BRM also, a great drive  The cover price has to be worth it for this article alone, but then there is a great piece on Ronnie, which gave me a lump in my throat reading it, he was such a lovely guy. I was so fortunate to watch him from his early days racing in Britain in the 1 Litre Techno & March F3 cars, and then to watch his amazing speed in the 72, what an absolute star he was! These are the only two articles that I have read so far, but at this rate, with a nice sunny day and no further "lists" being issued by the "Clerk of Works" , I will finish it in the next few hours.

As regards the declining sales of many magazines. There are of course many "marque" magazines on the book shelves these days, MG, Jaguar, BMW, Classic Ford, Retro Ford etc, quite apart from those for steam engines, tractors, lorries and a new one I saw for old vans. I wonder what their circulation is as you can see them in most newsagents? Perhaps enthusiasts are switching from the general classics to specific interests? I don't buy Classic Car or C&SC these days other when going on holiday but I do get all three MG magazines.
Also what about Practical Classics, is it not the market leader in classic magazines?

Difficult to tell, Gregor. The clue's in "practical", which is its focus - it's primarily a "technique" publication rather than a "connoisseur/history" one. So it's only really competing with Classics Monthly, which doesn't report its figures to ABC. In my experience as a retailer, it probably outsells Classics Monthly 2:1.

I Know Motorsport and Autocourse cover F1 and span the decades but does anyone know the history of specialist Formula 1 magazines.

Motor Racing magazine seems to cover the period 1950's and 1960's but I dont think was a specialist. The first i can recall was the great Grand Prix International magazine covering the period 1979-1986. Then there seems a big gap until the early 1990's when there seemed to be a rash of them, F1 News came along in 1992-2002, there as Chequered Flag I recall and then F1 Racing and last Formula One magazine. Of these only F1 RACING survives.

So what happened between 1986 and 1992. Was there no specialist formula one magazine around in that period. I am particularly interested as it covers the peak senna years and seems odd there was no specialist mag covering the sport at that time.

Any views

There was Prix Editions, which I think was Australian, that seemed to fill the GPI-shaped gap for a while. Even to the extent of covering something only tangentially related to F1; does anyone remember GPI covering powerboat racing in the last few issues? Prix Editions covered the bikes.

Those were the exact words I was thinking of after reading Josef's post! They also covered CART to some extent, couldn't touch GPI, though - more of a glamour mag.

Has anyone (in the UK) received their subscription copy for this month yet? Normally mine would arrive just before the end of the month preceding, but I realise I've not yet seen the new issue.

Before I phone up the subscriptions people I thought I'd check if it was just me!

So did mine and I too thought the 10yr CD option was worthwhile.

My only gripe in this issue is the pointless two pages of Social Diary photographs from The Revival. There was less space devoted to pictures of the racing from the meeting.

I was getting worried that my magazine didn't arrive before October until I came home from my girlfriend's house and it was there on the floor yesterday.

I am tempted to buy a two year subscription on top of my current one year subscription and maybe get the 1980 Motorsport archives.

Is it possible to buy a two year subscription on top of my current subscription I got for Christmas from last year?

I agree - but like it or not Goodwood seems to have become part of The Season- which certainly explains the number of braying hoorays last time I visited. But not a problem - and preferable to the pissed up Geordies who one occasionally encounters at Croft..

So ..this month's..excellent Roebuck ; ditto Simon Taylor's lunch with Johnny Herbert

Nowt about motorbikes and watches so far too.

Total agreement with David Lawson's and Stephen W's posts. Two pages wasted in an otherwise excellent issue. Simon Taylor's lunch interviews are regularly amongst the best articles in the magazine.

I'm interested to see that nowadays the latest issue appears on my local (independent) newsagent's shelves a day or two before mine arrives in the post.

That really annoys me; surely as a subscriber my copy should be thudding on the doormat before any copies appear in newsagents - next thing you know they will be on sale in EBAY before we see them!!!

Yes. It is possible to extend a current subscription. I topped up my subscription at Goodwood and took the 1960s DVD. And they didn't check my account!

They sent me two copies of the 1950s DVD and continue to send letters suggesting I renew my previous subscription which I had cancelled in favour of a two year subscription. It makes me think that whoever is running their admin dept hasn't got a bloody clue what is going on and I hate to think that they could cause the mag to go under just when it's improved so much

I'd like to say how much I enjoyed Chris Witty's article on Gunnar Nilsson. A real tribute illustrated by Chris's personal reminiscences; so much better than the bland quotes we often get. I hope this article is the first of many.

Quite agree - I remember seeing Gunnar blitz everyone at F3 Cadwell;in same year he crashed in front of us at Silverstone, climbed out of the car and cadged a John Player Special from me.And CW writes so well I think - as you say he was there and knew GN as a mate.Doubt if in 30 years time we will be getting too many recollections of my best friend Kimi..

I too found the article fascinating, and it contained many nuggets of information about Gunnar's background and his route into F1 which I had not previously been aware of.
