I am trying to find more information about 'Sam' Nordell. (On the right in the photograph) He was a Swedish/Canadian driver who drove a works Vauxhall (usually the car registered 4 FTM - one of three cars prepared by the factory) on a number of major international rallies during 1963. Unfortunately, he was killed during a recce for the 1964 Monte Carlo rally. I do have some background info, but any other detail would be very welcome, along with any other info about the cars driven on events. In 1962 the three cars were registered 2, 3 & 4 FTM. Following Nordell's accident two other cars were used on events such as the Monte, Tour de France and RAC by Peter Bolton and others but they were registered 653 KNM and ??? KNM.

1963 RAC Rally

#150 Sam Nordell/Bill Barlow, Vauxhall VX4/90.

From Michael Durnin’s Autosport report (22.11.63)
“…. an 18-mile stage along the mountains at Dovey. It was smooth, fast and very, very slippery. Surfaces ranged from tarmac to hard packed earth and gravel and included quite a lot of deep mud. Halfway through the stage, on a tightening right-hander, Sam Nordell and Bill Barlow lost heir VX4/90 at speed, shot off the road and went down 60 feet, rolling four times on the way. They were both quite unhurt but the car was very battered.”

Other VX4/90s on the entry list were:
#41 Peter Bolton/X
#66 Jim McInnes/Stuart Parker (retired)
#77 Geoff Allen/Saville Woolley.

Thank you for this 'nugget'. It appears that he also rolled on the Tulip as well. Maybe this is the reason that 4 FTM didn't come out for the 1964 season.

Hi, Andrew,

as you maybe knows he managed to finish 5th in class (Special Touring, 1301-1600cc) in the '63 Midnatssolen.

Other appareances in 1963, according to my database:

- Spa Sofia Liège: #22, Nordell / Bill Barlow, Vauxhall VX4/90, DNF
- Tour de France: #55, Nordell / Hugh Braithwaite, Vauxhall Victor, DNF (crash, 1st leg)

Carles.
