Hi!
I've been trying for some time to get hold of any technical information about the 1927 Salmson 8 cylinder, but unfortunately I have found surprisingly little!
Apparently there is some reference to the engine in the book The Romance of Engines, where it is compared to the W196 Mercedes. But that is about all I've been able to find!

I would be very grateful for any information about this car and its very interesting engine; especially photographs!

Thanks,
Jonas

Perhaps the Vintage Sports Car Club can help
http://www.vscc.co.uk/vsccweb/
Their librarian is in the office on Wednesdays IIRC. If they do not respond to a non-member, I will be pleased to ask on your behalf.

PS Please excuse the use of your city's flag as my avatar. We were there last year for a few days.

Chris Draper's book The Salmson Story (1974) has a 13-page chapter on these, with a longitudinal section and a scrap view of the desmodromic valve operation (nothing like the Mercedes system, by the way) plus a photo of the engine

Is that the sort that Steen Pedersen is restoring?

There's a piece on it in The Light Car & Cyclecar Magazine,
Vol XXXI No.794
February 24. 1928

according to someone who sold that issue on Ebay in June

Allan,
Thank you for your references! I shall try to locate at least the book. The magazine I have no idea of how to find..

Roger,
Thank you for the advice! I will give it a try!
And I do not have any problem whatsoever with your avatar! On the contrary! If ever you return to Lund, please let me know and we could meet!

There probably weren't many examples built of the 8 cyl Salmson and racing success might not have been overwhelming, but still I am surprised of how little mentioning this little jewel of engine has gotten in the motorsport history documentation.

Thanks,
Jonas

Draper thinks only three complete engines were made

Another reference (in Draper) is The Autocar of 28 February 1928

Draper's book is quite expensive if you can find one (Abebooks has one at £70 at present), cf. £5.25 new in 1974

Apparently the bore and stroke was 50mm by 70mm
