And a great account of the Peugeot 404s in the Safaris. And should I let you know the details of my 404s?

So the launch discussion is ended, but my initial question has few replies!
Has anyone any more COLOR photos of the EAS cars and details of any prep work done. And yes I have communicated with Sochaux, and they have a big fat nothing to offer. I have press release photos from the era (top copy) in B&W but I would like any other material available.

Just seen this.

My photos show that in 1963 the two 404s that finished were pale blue while the 403/7 was sort of beige/ pale yellow. The 1966 winner was cream. All standard colours.

In 1965 the team of 404s that took the team prize was the 'B' team made up of privateers. Only two of the 'A' team, the official importers' cars finished.

Great information- thanks!
I grew up in Africa in the 60s and can remember the 404 had a great reputation as a tough and comfortable car.
I am wring an article on Triumph rally history for my club magazine and would like to make use of some of the material in this thread- I will certainly credit the source.

The Peugeot 404 was still being built in Argentina in the 1980s.

The 404 Register is now up to 2366 cars (about 14% of total production), with 4444 other 404 body styles also registered.

 

The 404 was in production in northern Africa until 1988 and the last one built from a CKD kit was done in Kenya in 1991.

Was it not also produced in South Africa?  With many components manufactured in the country it was more than assembling CKD kits.

... in fact they differed quite a bit from the French ones - the shape of the upper part of the front fenders (wings) for example. They also had 1.8 engines and floor shifters. The only French made 404 with the 1.8 was a batch of 3400 station wagons for Canada and the USA. This engine had twin carbs.

No, hang on a sec...

The 'twin carburettors' would be of the same style as used on some models of the 2-litre 504, I'd imagine. Two single-draft Solexes sitting side by side, ie. one further from the head than the other.

No, hang on a sec...

That's right, it was a 504 1.8 engine.  Made the wagon go pretty well with 87 HP and good torque.
