BMW has announced that the Qadbak Investments company has agreed to purchase the Formula 1 team based in Hinwil.

The German company had revealed earlier this year that it will quit Formula 1 at the end of the season, and had been in talks with interested parties since then.

On Tuesday, BMW said it had signed the contract to sell the team to Qadbak, a Swiss-based foundation which represents the interests of certain Middle East and European-based families.

"A strong investor has therefore been found for the Hinwil-based team," BMW said in a statement.

"Qadbak's interest in the team will be represented by Lionel Fischer, a Swiss national. BMW wishes Qadbak and the Sauber Team every success for the 2010 season and beyond."

The sale of the team coincides with the FIA having announced the 13th entry for the 2010 championship went to the Lotus outfit, with BMW as a possible 14th entry in case a current team fails to race next year.

The FIA also said it would talk to the teams about the possibility of increasing the grid size to 28 cars to allow the Hinwil squad to race next year.

14 teams on the grid could be interesting.... attimes chaotic, but interesting

consistency would become a bit harder, even for the teams with fast cars

If we get 28 cars, Monaco Q1 will be interesting.

Will BMW continue making an engine for Sauber with this deal, or will Sauber need to find a replacement?

I can't see USF1 being there, perhaps not Toyota either I guess.

Anyway, good news. Hopefully Quick Nick gets to stay with the team.

I wonder if the Petronas cash will now go to this Malaysian Lotus thing...

IIRC just after BMW's withdrawal announcement Dr T were asked if they would supply engines to whoever bought the team and their reply was along the lines of no, its a complete withdrawal.

Well at least there will be no fear now of losing (in grid terms) Renault. It's OK though, Max and Bernie are rich enough that they don't need to worry about 600 jobs.

Is that the same QADBAK company that bought Notts county?

I'm pretty sure I'd read somewhere that they are pulling the pin on engines too.

Won't happen. Nobody will put a penny into an F1 team without the guarantee to race on sunday.

New to this board, so hi all.
Also, as far as I know, Qadbak is Qatari investment fund, which allegedly bougth Notts County, so my guess would be that money and sponsorship is not a very large problem, regarding possible departing of Petronas.

You know, if they get say Merc engines then this could be quite a potent team. Sounds like they have some backers with deep pockets, the Hinwil setup is top class, so I think Nick must be relieved and I suspect Kubica could even stick around now pending how the silly season plays out. BMW were the third big team as of 2008, they've had a rough 2009 but in 2010 could be strong again with these new owners.

"Qadbak Sauber" ... "Sauber Qadbak".

Doesn't matter how you say it, it doesn't really roll off the tongue, does it?

I'd say Petronas, being a Malaysian company, would like to go to Lotus, beinga Malaysian team.

They must agree in accepting this Qadbak team because Hinwill crew has already proved to be a competent one.

Will Qadbak keep all the resources(wind tunnels, Albert computer and etc) and personel?

I think there's a long queue for those engines already isn't there?

I'd be thinking Renault.

Well I would say backing from Qatar is awesome news in terms of keeping resources, they are flushed with cash and could easily supply a team like this with the resources they need.

renault will probably go to williams, leaving toyota engines available. usf1 will stick with cosworth. qadbak sauber will get toyota customer engines. that's what i reckon.

We could still only end up with 20 cars or so - Lotus has about 6 months to get ready so may run out of time, USGP may not get it together in time either, Toyota may pullout, as may Renault if the FIA hands down a substantial penalty/fine for crashgate.

Pessimistic I know but I think it is overly optimistic that we will have 28 cars on the grid next season...

Toyota engines would be the worst possible option and a reason for drivers not to stay with the team.

They seriously need to come up with a good name though, cos that does not roll off the tongue.

New paint schemes as well now! No more BMW white!

As for engines, well, with good backers with deep pockets I am sure they would be looked upon favourably by engine suppliers, maybe even skip a spot in the queue here or there;)

Anything but the Cosworth.

Those engines sound like they'll be overweight and underpowered.

Not the first time around, but I reckon Ferrari would want to sell some more of their engines, now that Merc is covering half the field and buying teams left and right :D

Quote from BMW

"We are pleased to confirm that the FIA has indicated that we may have a place in the 2010 Formula One World Championship," said a BMW statement.

"The team expects to line up on the grid for the first race of the 2010 season."

Brilliant! An assured 24 car grid, then.

What're they going to name it,though? Surely not Qadbak Racing or some such nonsense....? Qadbak-Cosworth sounds horrible,at any rate.

IIRC, Petronas (partly) own either Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional (Proton) or the Lotus Cars/Lotus Group company, so they're bound to link up with the new 'Lotus F1 Team'.

I don't see how they won't have another "defreezing" of the engines to get them on the same level since the merc power unit is obviously overpowered. Simply isn't fair. I also don't see how Renault would be kicked out for cheating in 1 race when mclaren ripped off another teams technical plans and designs (A far more grievous act of cheating) and still was allowed to race. Renault may decide to leave but if they are stopped from racing by the FIA its a total crock.

I think Peter Sauber's share has also been bought out so I don't think his name will form part of the new team's name...

No, Renault is horrible, look what they did to RBR. The ideal would be Mercedes but, as you said, is hard because everybody wants it.

They seriously need to come up with a good name though, cos that does not roll off the tongue.

Regargind the name I agree with you, but have to completely disagree about the colors. BMW's color scheme is the best in F1 imo, an elegant white with blue details. Simply tasteful.

Porsche, Audi, Skoda and owned by VW .

But it has said repeatedly that F1 isn't a sport it wants to be involved in.

Although the idea of an Audi F1 car would be awesome, I can't see that manufacturer getting involved unless it knew they could win, and that means £££.
