I was lucky to have been given the opportunity to restore his favorite racing car, Fiat 8VZ chassis 084, with which he won at Avus in 1955 and at many other events. It had nearly ceased to exist after a bad crash here in Los Angeles in 1959. We restored the chassis and then sent it back to Zagato where he supervised the recreation of the body to it's 1955 specification.
He was a true gentleman.
My condolences to his family.

Elio Zagato passed away Monday at the age of 88. A successful racing driver, designer, and responsible for some of the most beautiful GT cars of the '50s and '60s if not of all time.

In his thoughtful obituary in Omniauto.it, Giovanni Notaro notes that Elio was
a designer, a driver, and an industrialist. And a gentleman.
