It's always a good idea to try "Search" first. Here's the earlier John Hine thread.

I did search first and came up with a load of irrelevancies. Thanks tho' Giraffe, happily one of our members had a telephone number for John in the UK and I spoke to him this AM and eliminated him as driver. I am trying to find the definitive history of a B23 and from the looks of things the only candidate for the drive at Magny-Cours on 1st May 1973 is J-P Beltoise. I have asked his site without meaningful response

Allen Brown (OldRacingCars.com) had a research project underway on Chevron sportscars from the B16 Spyder/B19 onwards, but I've lost the link he gave me. You could ask him for info, John?

I had a quick look in that week's Motoring News but there's no Magny-Cours report. I know it wasn't a round of the European 2 Litre Championship - what was the meeting?

You might have tried this site already but, if not, these guys might be of help to you. http://209.85.229.13...KmY...Ff=2&t=22

French Championship. John Hine was 6th in a B23 and JPB was 7th, we know that the car was at thae meeting but so were several other B23 and no entrants are given. The entrant was Ember Racing, unfortunately there were a fair number of drivers over the season 0f 73 and no one of them can remember who did what except Tony Goodwin who was NOT at Magny-Cours. I had put a query on Autodiva just before you suggested it John

In UK programmes an E L Hine appears quite often eg Boxing Day Brands 1959 driving a Cooper FJ entered by John Hine Cars. Can anyone confirm that E L Hine and John Hine are one and the same ?

Yes. "With regard to the Hines, both father and son were E.L. Hine but both were always known as John and their business was John Hine Autos" , from an ex-racer friend of his whom I met in Ted Walker's tent at Classic Silverstone earlier this year while looking at photos. He had just spoken to John Hine before sending me the information. John Senior did not race and Chevron John is 75 this year.

On 12 July 1959 at the Brands Hatch BRSCC meeting a Moorland FJ #131 was entered by John Hine Cars Limited with E L Hine as driver. It would be interesting to find out if John Hine owned the car or was just driving it for Les Redmond. I think this was the first of the two Moorland FJ cars with the second one plus the gigs and parts being sold to Graham Warner of The Chequered Flag around August 1959 - it morphed into the Gemini MK1 and formed the basis for the Gemini Mk2. What happened to Hine's first Moorland .....?

Hello, my father was manager of Ember Racing (De Selingcourt, Hine, Quick, Howling) who bought a B21 from Red Rose and a new B23. That B23 was loaned to J-P B who won a race in class in 1973. Have some pictures of the 21 & 23 in ERL livery, Steve

Just looked up some paperwork: Have a letter 25/4/73 from Motor Race Consultants "to confirm acceptance of your entry at Magny Cours for both Ember Racing Chevrons. Nominated drivers are John Miles and Jean-Pierre Beltoise. ... practice is on Monday 30 April ..... the event is on Tuesday 1 May."

Have another document "13eme Circuit de Vitesse du Nivernaise: Sport Prototypes Groupe 5/7 - liste des engages"

No Concurrent Pilote Voiture
1 Ember Racing Jean Pierre Beltoise Chevron B23
2 P.H.Archambeaud Gerrard Larrouse Lola T292
3 Ecuire Vic Elford Vic Elford March BMW 73 S
4 Dart Racing John Miles GRD 73 S
5 Equipe Gallia Jean-Louis Lafosse Lola T282
6 Barclays I. T. Lola Guy Edwards Lola T292
7 Ember Racing John Hine Chevron B23 (sic - should be the B21)
...
...
16 Cafe Cote D'Ivorie Marie-Claude Beaumont Lola T290
...
...
18 MRSK Bell Ian Harrower Chevron B23

So Ember Racing's B23 car number 1 in your photo was definitely driven by J-P B

hope this helps, Steve

Hi Steve

Id be very interested to see those pictures. I've done somework on the Chevron B19s (http://www.oldracing...chevron/b19.htm) and I'm pretty sure the B21 bought from Red Rose was actually an uprated B19 chassis 71-32. Howlings bought two cars (the ex-Burton B21 being the other) but the ex-Burton car was moved on quite quickly leaving the team with the B19/21 until the new B23 was delivered.

Does your father have any recollection of what happened to the two cars? The B23 was advertised by Quick until 1975 but I'd be very interested in any information on what happened to the B19/21.

Hi there

I'm researching the History of a Lotus Eleven and have come across a photo on Revs showing John driving what looks to be the same car in 1959 in the Anerley Trophy at Crystal Palace.

I would post a link or photo but it seems I'm incapable but if you type John Hine into Revs search it's the only photo of him driving an Eleven.

Does anyone have contact details for John so I can ask him his recollections of the car.

Thanks

Jon Adams

I did talk to John when I was looking for the Chevron for Bill's 90th in 2011, sadly his memory appeared to have failed. He denied ever having driven for Ember Racing.

Hi there

I've been in contact with the BRDC and they have very helpfully agreed to forward on a letter and photo to John, so see what happens.

However if anyone knows John and is able to ask direct that would be much better.

Thanks all

Jon Adams

Going off-topic in that I cannot answer any of the questions asked in this thread....John Hine...when he was racing a Dolomite in the BSCC 74/75 time....he very kindly gave me a lift out of Mallory park after racing there. I was a student at the time, had no car, so used to train / bus / walk or hitch to circuits to marshal....when leaving afterwards, I usually kept my marshal's armband on....on this occasion John stopped and gave me a lift.

I haven't seen this for a long time, probably not since watching it live on television, August Bank Holiday 1971. Wilson Fittipaldi pushes John off line with disastrous consequences. Is that John Miles just ahead?
