I'm researching a Mustang with a J.W. Automotive Engineering VIN tag and need some help, please.

From some hints up to now I took that J.W.A. used its own VIN tags probably on a few GT40, maybe a Cobra 427 and a few other cars. Does anybody have some information why exactly and where those VIN tags were used. I assume probably for racing?
If somebody has a picture of such a tag, that might help as well to check the authentic origin of this Mustang tag.
Thanks in advance.

Never heard of a John Wyer Stang ! The GT40 had JW dataplate, and they also built Mirage... but could you say more about a JW Cobra and an hypothetic JW Stang.... you know racing cars dataplate are a big s.... ! ;)

Bonjour J.F.:)
At this moment only hints and a curious owner (with something to research, but wants to stay anonymous), no facts.

This is the J.W. tag from the 66 Mustang (VIN erased by myself). Does it look like a real J.W. A.E. tag? Need something to compare to.

It is a Fastback and located in France, could have been used around Le Mans. I checked your Le Mans thread and the other Mustang competition one, but can't find anything related. Could have been a press car as well or a VIP car.
If anybody has more information about the usage of J.W. tags, pls. let me know.

Edit: Well, ok, it is online somewhere already, so here is a pic.

The famous JW GT40 "1075" (twice Le Mans winner) has a tag marked "Ford Advanced Vehicles Ltd Chassis No GT40P 1075".

But is it according to the VIN, a true Shelby or a Shelby lookalike ?

In fact, it's look like a 66 shelby BUT with a 65 GT350 R frond under the bumper !

The VIN indicates a regular A-code Mustang, nevertheless it seems to have many if not all Shelby parts in the right place, as if sb. had a reason. Anyway the tag is the thing that I'd like to know more about. Will check your GT40 thread.

Also, by 1967, I understand J.W. Automotive Engineering was a partnership of John Wyer and John Willment. Could this have been a road car prepared by Willment?

J.W.A.E actually stood for "John Willment Automotive Engineering" and it was Willment who purchased the Ford GT40 project & cars, equipment etc. to continue the Le Mans programme. As to the Mustang, it is a bit of a mystery, but the Willment chassis plate is the genuine article - Willment's did apply plates to some cars they built or modified.

Thank you, I will keep the owner informed, but since he is a prof. restorer in France, he may have found some more insight meanwhile as well. I'll check back with him. As far as I know the car is and was not for sale since 2009 (he had just bought it around Aug. 2009).

Gosh this is spooky. I have just come home from seeing my Dad now eighty eight and not in good health. Whats all this got to do with JW Automotive???. Well my Dad, Phil Rowley was the truckie for JW back in the late 60's early 70's and apart from him bringing 917's back home from time to time one thing I do remember is him talking about driving the Mustang with great delight when he was sent off to collect parts from up and down the country. I will get back down next week to see him and he is now totaly deaf so I have to write everything down but I will ask him about the car for you. Good luck and if there is a chance of some pic's I can show him as well.

Picking this up again 3 years after, are there any pics of Mustangs/Shelby Mustangs at J.W. Automotive available (press visit or any spy?) or earlier at Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough. Several Shelbys were sold to FAV in 65/66 on paper. Could they have been stored somewhere else? I find it strange that none was pictured there.

Alan Mann once told me, he sold some for them at the London Racing Car Show 66.

I doubt wether this is a VIN plate. I am sure the car carries a Ford VIN no.  It may well be a ID plate for a car modified by them.

I believe they did do preperation work for others apart from their main program.
