As far as I'm concerned the "171" club is a band of road rally competitors who did events on the old OS 1" Map No.171, stretching to 172 and 183.

We used that often! Kent and the Marshes???Are you sure it was 171? 179/182 rings a bell?

171 is the 1:50,000 metric maps that were issued in 1974..ish, the 1" maps were immediately preceding this, so I gues Georgina is enquiring rallying in the brecon beacons etc.

The 171 Club would seem to have been a 1970s club for bikers in Manchester:

171 was South East London with bits of Kent (rarely used for rallies even then). 172 was the main Kent map. 173 was the east tip including Thanet. 179 was Bournemouth! 182 Sussex but the Levels was on 183.
