Emerson didn't win ! Denny Hulme chose the good tyres. Before the start it looked like rain but finally it didn't. Hulme's McLaren M19A won from Fittipaldi and Schenken.

Brian Redman was fourth and first of the F5000 class. It was the first ever race of his brand new Chevron B24. It was also the first ever F1 race of the young Aussie Vern Schuppan.

The two Swede Peterson ad Wisell collided on first lap. Peterson broke his thumb in the accident. The day before Peterson and Schenken had won the 1000 km of Nurburgring sportscars race.
