Please forgive the indulgence but I always enjoy the not yet nostalgia pics on the car side and so I thought maybe a bike version would be good. I spent last weekend at a very cold Phillip Island and MotoGP and the piccies can be found here

Enjoy.

Nice photos, Mo! Just curious - you might know the answer, on the side of the Rossi helmet above the Drudi logo, there's a small cartoon of a bike with another number (not 46) & a M*rlboro logo on the side of the fairing...any ideas?

That is a cartoon tribute to Rossi's first motoGP hero, Norick Abe. When Rossi first arrived in the paddock he was in awe of Abe and his first nickname "Rossifumi" was an homage to his hero. As you know, Abe died in a scooter accident in Japan two years ago and Rossi wears that decal as a tribute.

And Subh, please go ahead and link the story and the site, that would be cool. Thanks guys.

OK, link added - thanks.

Yes, the image of Abe is 1996 vintage, his second full year with the Roberts Yamaha team, when he took his first win in Suzuka.

In my travels this week I also went to the communications plaza at Yamaha HQ in Hamamatsu. We have a museum of sorts with displays and themes that change from time to time. I took a newer employee there to show him and much to my delight, the current display is all about the history of Yamaha in racing. As soon as I get to a decent connection, I will upload the pics. Very cool.
