During the mid fifties Sir Stirling Moss ran a two tone sliding window Standard 8 as his everyday car.

The car was fitted with a Standard 10 engine and wire wheels amongst other mods.

Does anybody have, or know where I can find a colour photo of this car? I have plenty of black and white ones!

Sir Stirling thinks it was cream over a Renault Metallic Green. Can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks

Not much joy?

Well, if you're any good at Photoshopping, you might be able to start with this example:

Just change the country, the attitude, the colour, the background. Oh, and it needs to have the wind-up window feature deleted!

I remember that the Autocar did a feature in whcih Stirling drove copy from the opening of the Motor Show to Praed Street with John Cooper (Autocar version), using his Standard, and I seem to recall pictures. Perhaps old copies of the magazine from the period might help you.

Alas and indeed alack, all the period mags have black and white pics.

I was hoping the car might appear in someone's sweeping paddock shot.

There are some great shots of the car in the book "Goodwood Remembered" but again in black and white.

You are generally right, of course, but somehow in my 72 year old brain I can see a picture of pale green Standard belonging to S Moss. Not much help I realise but even back then the Autocar had a colour cover, and possibly a few glossy pages inside?

Best of luck with your search, have you tried contacting Stirling himself, he is a very approachable sort.

Regards,

Bauble

There is a small piece about the car in the Octane magazine special eddition on Moss currently on sale where Moss describes the spec in some detail. No mention of the colour unfortunately, and the photo is B&W

The piece is from the scrapbook by Porter Press. You could always try contacting Phillip Porter to see if he has any more photos from the research.

As Moss was such a fan of gadgets, it's always possible he favoured colour film?

I'll try Phillip. Thanks for the tip.

I'm just surprised no one has a colour picture of the car in their collection.

In 1954 Stirling,s Commer Transorter,JaguarMk V11, Standard 8.and Vespa scooter were all painted the same colour, maybe this will help.

I contacted Pete Kenna and got the following:-

Thanks for your email. Sorry, I do not have any information on Stirling Moss' Standard 8, I had enough trouble finding photographs of the van! and in fact when I made the van I was told by a friend of Mr. Moss that Mr. Moss has said that the van never existed so I actually phoned Stirling Moss and sent him a faxed picture of the van to remind him. Later on I sent him a finished model.

Sorry I cannot help.

All the best.

Pete Kenna

That would be great to see those! Not a Standard 8 but still in the family!

Probably stating the obvious but if all vehicles were the same colour then the Standard 8 would have been the same as the Vanguard van. As I recall this was a mid metallic green. Pete Kenna should be able to confirm the actual colour used.

IIRC TCC , carried a photo of the Standard some years ago , cant be sure but I think it was a colour shot, and it was green.

It would be great to see these slides - I have details of a green and white coupe owned by Sir Stirling Moss, and a black and white photo of it.
Is the numberplate clear?

My cars, my career doesn't have a picture but it says "It [SFM 777] was two-tone green and cream ...". But that wasn't the car he raced at Oulton Park as All my races has a picture of him racing at Oulton Park confirming it's a different car.

The Octane 80th birthday tribute has a picture of SFM 777 without racing numbers. The roof, door and window pillars, and about 2" below the windows are lighter than the lower body, so presumably the cream bit.

I remember the car at Oulton, don't recall it being two tone. same race Jo Bonnier drove his 1900 Alfa which impressed me more. Thinks...there was a Zephyr as well, anybody got a programme showing the entry list?

For what its worth I have used a colour pic of the paddock at the 1955 Daily Herald International meeting Oulton Park that clearly shows a three quarter rear shot albeit with the roof cut off of the Moss transporter signed with MOBILE WORKSHOP, A ROOTES GROUP PRODUCT and STIRLING MOSS across its rear doors and a CAUTION LEFT HAND DRIVE in red on the bottom r/hand corner of the r/hand door, registration LTM 777 which is dark green (can't tell if it is metallic or not given the 1950s film stock colour) with cream side flashes and wheel arches on P135 of the forthcoming Sports Car Racing in Camera 1950-59.

Without checking I think you might be referring to the support race at the 1956 Gold Cup meeting where Brooks won in Rob Walker's 300SL from Bueb in an XK140 (I think the Bolton/Walshaw '56 Le Mans car) with Wharton 3rd. Can't recall anything about DKWs but a look at the stats will presumably provide the answer.

No, I remember that race very well, Brooks was out of sight of Bueb after the first lap. The race I am referring to was an early example of Touring Cars and the participants used their own road cars (ostensibly)

Without my '50s Autosports which are elsewhere I could only recall the '56 race that featured Brooks, Bueb and Wharton (who was I am sure driving a Zephyr) so apologies for that.
