Hmm..Great!
Buy wonderfull computer - 1000 euros
Buy wonderfull internet connection - 20-50 euros / month
Buy wonderfull wheel - 50 -500 euros
Buy wonderful game itself - 20-30 euros
Buy useless 50 euros per year to pay game you already have bought.
Poorman's Special computer at 600 CAN dollars
Entry level "broadband" (yeah sure!) I need anyway.
My old red MOMO wheel is still alive after 6+ years
The game itself I downloaded for free after I paid a whopping 5$ for a month's trial.
Paying 15$ a month isn't any more than my roommate pays for World of Borecraft. I pay it so I can find people to race with/against at about any hour of the day. And mostly competent racers they are.
I played GPL for a long time. I know how very cool it is to race on ANY track in existence. But I also know that for me to play those league races I craved, THERE ACTUALLY WAS SOMEONE PAYING. It wasn't me, more like one or two guys in the league who volunteered their money : paying for the League's Forum hosting. Paying for the Ventrilo/TeamSpeak servers. Paying for the league's practice/race server. -- You think this is FREE? Well no. Actually it was a few hundreds each year.
Dunno what's your beef with iRacing... Did you, like, create a mod that no one ever played because they went to iR?
For the record : I can't see the day I'll be able to afford even getting into any of the 'D-License' seasons. I'm sort of contemplating a career in Slowstice at Laguna and Lime Rock. Yet I still think it's gonna be worth my 15 bucks a month (on a monthly basis, can't pay for 6, 12months at a time) no matter.

What happens if your connexion drops? Do you get penalty points for the eventual crash?
How slow a connexion can you use for the sim to work properly?
In my experience of online racing when you disconnect your car disappears before the crash usually.
