Here's something I hope the fabulous TnF braintrust can elaborate on for me...

Roman Polanski made a movie called "Weekend of a Champion" in 1971 featuring Jackie Stewart.

Does anyone know where one might find this movie now? Was it ever available commercially? Anyone have a copy?

Would love to see it in its entirety, rather than little snippets on Youtube (JYS at breakfast is great!): http://www.youtube.c...feature=related

I've also seen it called "Afternoon with a Champion"..was that an alternate title?

Cheers,
Warwick

Someone on eBay is selling DVD-R copies, but I've never seen an "official" commercial copy. Is your VHS version a commercially available version? If so, maybe I just need to dig harder.

Great film, bought my DVD copy off Trademe (NZ ebay). Just love the scene of Jackie at the breakfast table in his underwear explaining cornering to Roman.

Cheers

On the 'net try an Italian company: f1dvdfans
I've got several 'bootleg' dvd's from them including Weekend Of A Champion and they're all fine.

I remember seeing this at the cinema when it was first released. Surprisingly, bearing in mind the dross it easy to get hold of, it doesn't seem to be on sale anywhere unless I'm looking in the wrong places.
Any ideas?

I think I'm correct in saying that it has not been released (officialy) on DVD, but was only available on VHS. As was mentioned in the previous thread noted above, it crops up from time to time on ebay.

Not so any more - from today the remastered film is available on DVD

I've never seen this, but it sounds interesting...

It was scheduled to be screened at an Australian Automobile Club film night once, obviously many years ago. I'm not sure if that was at their usual University of New South Wales venue or not, but I do recall I arrived late for the show and the projector was already rolling.

We were watching this murder mystery, which went on and on. One after another of these guests at some holiday venue were being found dead about the place with everyone trying to work out 'who dun it?'

I don't know if announcements were made at the beginning of the show, but at the end poor Mary Packard said to the assembled throng, "It seems that any movie with the word 'weekend' in the title would be good enough."

We had watched a B- (or more likely C-) grade flick called Murder Weekend if my memory serves. A complete and utter waste of a Saturday night!

Isn't that a wierd coincidence - I was just walking through Tesco's earlier today and spotted it in the DVD section. Twelve quid from them.

Apparently this movie has now been released in the U.S., though given Polanski's criminal record, I am reluctant to contribute money to him by paying to see it.

you're missing out by not seeing it. The scene where Jackie explains the art of cornering  (in his underpants!) is one not to be missed!!

I know exactly what you mean. Those lines by Stewart are still in my mind if I play racing games. The question is: are they still true? If I remember it correctly, Stewart said that before you turn in the corner, you have to have put the car 'at rest'. It must have quited down.

Better not vote for any mainstream political party then or watch/buy any film/video/dvd of assorted pop groups from the 1960s (and probably before) onwards or send your children to boarding school, any youth organisations, religious institutions or indeed any such establishments which have a constant throughput of children/adolescents, most of these are deliberately targeted by paedos for the guaranteed access. In many cases it is actually why they are working within them, not because of the job but for said access.

Not that I am condoning Mr. Polanski's actions of long ago but this was/is nothing new or original, it has been going on forever and will continue to do so alas.

Is this a reference to the March 701?

Certainly not!

I've not seen the film for a long time but I seem to remember it was whilst looking out of his Hotel room when F3's were out on circuit....or was that something totally different!!

Yes, that's the same film, Alan. They were looking out of the balcony at F3 practice and commenting on the various drivers: "This guy's quick", "He's hopeless" etc or words to that effect.

I think Helen was heard asking why Gerry Birrell wasn't there, with JYS responding that he'd moved on a bit from and it would have been something of a no-win situation for him (the implication was, I think, that if he won some folks might say he was pot-hunting, so win or lose it might not enhance his reputation).
