After watching a recent episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks I flicked onto the Red button debate that followed, where the question was: which is better, The Velvet Underground, or London Underground?

Couldn't help myself thinking of motor racing soundalikees.

So my question is: who's better, Jochen Mass, or Felipe Massa?

It's meant to be the silliest thread.

In fact, it's intended to be the polar opposite of the sort of threads I've encountered elsewhere, where people endlessly debate who's the better driver based on the point they turn into the apex of a corner. How people can endlessly debate something that the driver themselves does (largely) by the seat of their pants I'll never know.

It's just a bit of fun in the off season, with a thread chosen to get people talking about vastly different eras in a jokey way.

Having said that, it does look like a VERY stupid thread, so fair point. My fault for trying to emulate Phill Jupitus I suppose.

 It is very easy to be misunderstood with only a brief post, I know from experience!

Obviously Massa is better as he's got one more 'A' than Mass.

Ah but better at what? If it's about driver coaching, ocean racing, inverting historic Ferraris, amusing one liners, and generally being good company, my money is definitely on Jochen.See also Simon Taylor's "lunch with" in the current Motor Sport.

Yes, he's not as young as he used to be, but he's still the big bear of a man he ever was.

In all seriousness, I'm going for Jochen because he was (at least moderately) succesful in quite a wide variety of series and in several types of cars. Oh, and he was somehow tutoring the youngsters in the Mercedes-Benz junior sportscar driver program... and we know what one of them became and how he's connected to Felipe.

Gerhard Berger was slightly better than Georges Berger.

I would venture that Massa's the better sailor, given the fact Jochen famously sunk his own boat. U-boat genes no doubt.

As myself a newcomer too, I am a bit surprised how Mansell4PM managed to ¨make¨ 24 posts ( and counting...) from a silly nonsense thread.
I am still watching and learning. Should I learn from examples like this? You ( other members) tell me!
But I wish to start a thread wich could open some useful discusion for everybody here give or get some knowledge instead of just adding posted (numbered) silly answers...
Regards to all. Kein

Personally, I am not in favour of "nonsense" threads having been bitten by one in the past! I do however agree with a bit of light-hearted banter from time to time, which prevents the forum from becoming a rivet counter's dirge, and only reflects what you hear at most circuits, if you've spent any time in the pits!
Don't forget that the odd "nonsense" thread has not only been contributed to, but actually been started by some of our most esteemed contributors on more than one occasion!

Not famously at all, but just wrong.

In the early 1970s Mike Hailwood, on a whim, bought a scruffy old 128-foot top-sail schooner, and promptly lost interest in it. Jochen Mass, a proper sailor since his teens, took it over and had it restored to perfection with a lot of effort, time and expenditure. He then sailed it for some 20 years, including several trans-Atlantic sorties. In the 1990s, while he was away racing, he needed it to be taken to the north German coast, and contracted a professional captain and crew to take it there. The professional wrecked it on a sandbank, and it was a total loss. Jochen was desperately saddened by the destruction of his old friend, and has photographs of the boat, in full sail and after the wreck, on the walls of his house in France. He says there's a dockside restaurant in Bremerhaven whose bar and tables are made out of wood from the wreck of his schooner.

Ghinzani's feeble U-boat genes joke does him little credit, but I doubt Jochen will lose any sleep over it. He is a remarkable character and a very nice man - see "Lunch With...." in the current issue of Motor Sport. He tells this and many other stories.....

Nein! Kapitän zur See Mass wasn't on board the boat at the time, the deed was done by an employee.

I was lucky enough to meet Jochen at this year's FOS at Goodwood, and what really impressed me about him was his sheer unbridled enthusiasm for the machinery, the people and the event. Top Herr!

I think you can put your coat back on, 'Herman the German' was exactly what Jochen was known as at McLaren when he was partnering Emerson in 1975, but maybe you knew that.

I think, on balance, this thread WAS a mistake. Some have had a bit of fun with it though.

I would suggest though that speculating who's going to have the quickest F1 car next year is equally silly before testing starts. After all, who would have predicted this time last year that Brawn (nee Honda) would end up with both 2009 championships? I know the rules shook things up, but .......

This thread isn't something I would have started during the F1 season (when there are things worth discussing), just something to fill people's time in the off-season. It was deliberately chosen as well to run and run, as they never (to my knowledge at least) raced each other, so how can their be a right answer to this? The magazine has occasionally run some 'unusual' articles during past winters, after all.

If a moderator is reading this and you want to close it down, feel free.

Or does anyone have anything amusing to add yet?

I get the distinct impression that a few people, naming no names of course, aren't treating this thought provoking thread with the seriousness it deserves.

I don't feel quite so stupid with that knowledge.
