Back in 1969/1970 while watching sports cars at Snetterton there was an entry for Ernest T Blackadder cant remember the car he was supposed to drive but i think it was the same as the Derek Buller Sinfield entry for George Silverwood. Ie Mercury /Lotus 23

Anyone know of this guy or his cars team etc.?

Ernie was a great enthusiast with a garage business in Falkirk. He owned a number of interesting racing cars including an Intercontinental Cooper that he ran at Ingliston. Yes, he also had the Costin. Sadly he died about a year ago.

In the very first Ingliston meeting on April 11th 1965 he was entered in the "Racing cars over 1200cc" event in a Porsche-VW but non started.
At the May meeting he had a Porsche S90 and came third in the GT's over 1200cc and won £8. At the August meeting he had a Cooper Climax 1500cc and at the October meeting he was entered in the F.Libre race in a Cooper 1500cc, presumably the same car.
After that he moved on to an Elan and at the April 66th race he came 4th in the sports cars over 1200cc race and won £4.

With Rowan Atkinson's interest in cars and racing could Ernest have been the inspiration for the name Edmund Blackadder, although I doubt whether there were any other comparable traits in their characters. Is this a coincidence or was it all part of a 'Cunning Plan' ??

Hi,

Ernest Blackadder is actually my grandfather, and he is alive and well, and still a fan of motor racing, watching however, not driving. I am sure he will be thrilled when I tell him I found a thread about his racing on the internet.

I would really appreciate that if you have any stories about seeing him race, photographs etc you could get in touch. His memory isn't quite as good as it used to be, and any memories like that would be great to share with him. I really do hope I hear from any of you soon.

A rather unusual surname- my Form Master in the 2nd year at Chorlton Grammar School in Manchester, back in the 60s, was called Blackadder- perhaps a relative? He was a Russian specialist and, one day, in the middle of morning registration, we were interrupted by the arrival of the Police, who asked him to accompany them....

Apologies for thread drift.   ;)

There's interesting, whom do you suppose Graham thought had died? There surely can't be two so named.

Ok you win. I killed off poor Ernie when I was actually thinking about another Scot from the same area who raced in the Ingliston days, Andrew Goodfellow.
I have dropped Jodie and Ernie a private note. How is Bill de Selincourt getting on, by the way ?

Graham

I went to Bill's 93rd last month, apart from the fact that he can no longer walk he is much the same, as he says he can think, see. hear, talk, eat and drink. Family are asking me to sort out his 95th!!

Couple of things we talked about (Big TV in the room for the start of Le Mans) were Brooklands, he must be the only living person to have lapped the Outer Circuit and I think the only man alive to have won a motor race pre war (Clapton in Gordano).

Another thing about Le Mans, he was in the target grandstand in 1955 and was knocked unconscious in the accident, things we didn't know.

Best

John
