I was thinking about this tonight. When was the last time someone from Northern England raced in Formula One? Im probably missing someone really obvious, but I cant think of any, recently anyway.

Rather less recently, Brian Redman, from Colne, east Lancashire.

Not in Formula 1, but there's a young lad from East Herrington in Sunderland who's been doing well in karts, Paul Hardy who's 15

Force India invited him to have a look around their factory, his dad is finding it hard to keep up the cost so the Racing Steps Foundation are going to support him if he can keep his form up

Here's the story

Cliff Allison was from Cumbria, and Tony Brooks from Ashton-under-Lyne or thereabouts. So Justin would seem to be the only one of the past 35 years!

Its cos all't teams ah based down south. Maybe Manor GP is the start of a shift North for F1... whippets and flat caps in't pit (not down't pit). Tetleys and sunday dinner with yorkshire pudding in't McLaren Brand Centre. I can see it now!

Not exactly recent, but there was also Trevor Taylor from Sheffield who owned and raced for Ace Garage in Rotherham.

I've found a couple more. Guy Edwards is from Macclesfield and Peter Walker was from Leeds.

But on the other hand, the North has a near monopoly on motorcyclists. Haslam, McElnea, Whitham, Foggy, Hodgson, Hacking, Toseland, Duke... 'Tis a class thing most probably.

'Course Hailwood, Read and Sheene were Southerners, and pretty quick on a motorbike.

Plus, the North isn't exactly bursting with national level race tracks apart from Croft, which, being from Leeds, does always sadden me.
I remember about 10 years ago, when CART was still in existence, there was rumour that Manchester was looing at hosting a street race for them.

Should've had it here, although they'd get lost around the city centre loop....

I know you're being facetious, but Mansell is not from the North.

It depends who you ask. Who put you in charge of making the rules? I would certainly consider him to be northern.

Oulton Park, yes.

Cadwell Park is in Lincolnshire and as such is in the East of England rather than the North.

That's the ultimate in pedantry and would make the aforementioned Croft 'in the East' too; Cadwell is, I think, farther north than Oulton - just.

I would have put Cadwell in the North. Snetterton is in the East.

Considering Cadwell is just below the Humber estuary I'd claim it for the North.

LOL the tightest, miserable git with a weird accent Ive ever met is from affluent rural surrey, went to private (public if you will) boarding school and worked in London all his life. And why I worked for him for 2.5 years is beyond me! Lets face it, etonian english is much more 'funny' than your stereotypical Northerner.

Andrew 'Shov' Shovlin is from Liverpool. Race Engineer to Jenson Button for last 6 years or so, race engineer to Michael Schumacher next year.

http://www.jamesalle...er-at-mercedes/

With Smedley teaming up with Massa again thats two title protagonists race engineered by Northerners in 2010.

Guy Smith tested an F1 car, can't remember who with. He's from Beverley, East Yorkshire.
