This annual thread has become one of my favorites and I find myself looking forward to it at the beginning of each year. Surprisingly, I actually know quite a lot more about what Doug posts today than was the case when I first joined TNF. Thanks Doug and to TNF.

The answers and expertise shown here never fail to impress me.

 - the answers are just great, and so helpful. Occasionally, before I post them here, I haven't a clue what my photos show...tsk tsk.

 Bill and wife Esther celebrating his win after the 1953 '500', run in the highest temperatures in race history.

1953....hmmmm......that would be due to the 'global warming' we get harangued/taxed/bludgeoned/warned about so much, would it ....?

Guess it hadn't been invented back then ;)

Sorry, I'm just an old cynic ...

... and who was neither mad (probably) nor Russian.;)

He very much disliked the nickname. I've run across a newspaper column where he talked with the columnist. The nickname came up and he stated how much he disliked it, blaming a newspaper reporter for creating it.

Walt Faulkner's widow recalled that she & Walt and Bill & Esther would get together for a meal after the midget races at Gilmore Stadium and that while Walt was serious about his racing, that Bill was constantly thinking of the next improvement to the set-up of his car and soon talk would turn to that.
