Hi Mark,
If you are logged in with a digital sub on the digital page (autosport.com/digital) you should see it there.
Hope this helps.

David

So ...As PLUS members is it possible to download our trial editions...or no?
I am logged in and I see no download icon on either the autosport.com/digital page or the actual 3D issue.
I even went to the vast and confusing http://www.3dissue.com/help.htm page.
Even more flummoxed now

I have no time to read it now and want to assess the possibility of purchase later.
Thanks for any attention on this David

Same question here - I'm a plus member and see no download. Do we have to be paid up subscribers already to get the download?

You have to be a subsciber to the mag to be able to download. I wasn't able to before I subscribed.

Having said that though, I have tried accessing the digital trial version on my iphone and got the dreaded blue cube. So I suppose the digital platform uses some sort of flash but the PDF file itself should be readable on the iPad without flash. But that means one won't be able to download the PDF version straight from iPhone/iPad?

One of the reasons for the PDF version is iDevice compatibility, but it may balk a bit at the hefty 60 MB file. Downloading via a PC to an app is a good solution, but we may also introduce a second, smaller PDF at some point. Compressing the near gigabyte (per issue) of press-ready PDFs isn't easy though without losing readability.

I still question the wisdom in making the PDF version so easily available to download, without the requirement for a username or password or other gubbins. What's to stop someone from sending the URL or the file itself to their mates for free? I doubt morales will stop most from doing so?

There will be controls to kerb link sharing, once this free trial period ends, but they are not currently in place so we can assess the scaling required and the best solution to cope with the traffic level. Future PDFs are also set to have measures so we can trace the source of any being shared illegally. Anyone caught breaching the terms of access is likely to face a ban.

Any purchased subscriptions don't expire until March 9th 2011 to cover this free trial period.

Question for the Autosport team, just had a think about this today.

The trial perod includes the 4th Feb and 11th Feb editions, is there any possibility of the issues from Jan 2010 being available as it would be nice to have a complete 2010 set?

Unfortunately due to a rights issue we are only able to offer this from Feb 4 issue onwards.

For years I was considering to subscribe to Autosport printed magazine, but...

... I was not friend of delays for me being outside of UK and frankly it was hell of expensive!

But now it is dream come true for me and I am happy :) Autosport guys, just tell me how much I have to pay in order to keep it going and I will pay! :D

Thanks for this. Another step to make the world little bit smaller...

Has there been any thought on releasing the digital version the day before? I would assume it would be ready, as there would be at least a day of printing and distribution of the paper copy.

Thanks

Great, enjoyed both of these issues, which is good timing as the international newsagents I use here in Vancouver stopped supply Autocar and Autosport a few weeks ago.

Quick question: Once the link sharing comes in, will you still be able to save the PDF to your machine. it would be great to have an archive over the year.

Do you intend keeping the PDF going? Thats good for me as I can scan it on my Iphone on my commute

Just need to update my Plus membership now.

Thanks for this :)

There has. Invariably there are reasons why we'll have to wait until Thursday, but if the opportunity arises we may be able to make it available at some stage on Wednesday. As a general rule though, it will be available on Thursday.

Yes to both.

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback so far. Do feel free to keep asking any questions you have or putting forward any other comments or suggestions.

Hello David,

first of all, i would like to thank Autosport so much for introducing the digital Version of the Autosport Magazine. Now i am able to read the Magazine, because i am from Germany and it was nearly impossible to me getting the print-Issues over here.

But what i would like to ask you:
Is there any way to pay monthly instead of a yearly Fee? Maybe with a monthly securring option? That would be great. I am really looking forward to subscribe to this Feature.

Cheers

Yes, me too - £112 is too much to pay for a magazine subscription all in one go. I noticed on the Haymarket subs website "Payment: Direct Debit - 13 issues @ 33.28 Delivery: (GBR) UNITED KINGDOM " is available.

I want monthly! :-)

Hi Ruud,
It's my understanding that the Kindle can only view content purchased from Amazon, so you wouldn't be able to view the pdf of the Autosport digital edition on a kindle as we have no plans to sell this through Amazon.

Is there any set time that each new edition is added?

It seems to vary quite a bit week to week, and seems late today.

We regret to inform you that we are currently unable to offer UK subscribers to AUTOSPORT magazine free access to the Digital Edition.

This is due to circumstances beyond our control that we are working to resolve as soon as possible.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and hope that you continue to enjoy the magazine and your access to AUTOSPORT PLUS on autosport.com in the meantime.

Any estimated time on how long this will take?

The rule is to have the issue available by 09:00 UK time each Thursday, but where possible it is published a little earlier in the day. On the to do list is an RSS feed that will help you know when it is released.

Dank, as the message says, we are working on it. There's nothing more I can add at this stage.

Second successive week, and once again magazine subscribers are told that the digital version of the magazine is not available for some reason that appears to be shrouded in mystery.

Is this going to be a regular occurrence?

I don't know the how difficult this would be, but, is there any chance of being able to provide any supplements in digital format also?

This week's 44 page Le Mans guide would have been handy in .pdf format.

Anyone else has issues viewing the pages in the viewer, when they're not zoomed in?

I've noticed this already in past issues, but this week's one seems to be the worst: i'm on page 16 and i couldn't see at least 6 pages, cover included.

I know you can zoom in, but i find it quite frustrating....

I was going to post about this too. I often have problems when certain pages appear as blank white sheets, even when the whole magazine has finished loading. Sometimes, the zoomed in pages take a while to load too.

Also, as soon as you type in a page number to skip to instead of just using the direction arrows either side of the numbers, you then afterwards have to click the arrows several times for each page to get it to change, which is really annoying. And the corners don't always turn when you click them the first time either.

I don't really like GP Week itself, but I find the online magazine software that they use much less glitchy than whatever Autosport is doing.

I know thats all a bit critical so I just want to add that I really do enjoy having the digital service as having a paper subscription isn't practical when I'm at uni, and buying magazines individually was costing me a fortune

You will be able to soon, yes - though we haven't decided which issue to start individual digi mag sales with yet. Probably 7th or 14th October issues.

There are a couple of provisos though.

1) You'll need to pay using PayPal (which from our perspective is the best payment method for micropayments of below £5 per transaction), which means you'll need a PayPal account if you don't already have one

2) We've decided to price the product the same as the print mag, as we don't want to detract from print sales - so £3.20 per issue

Let me know if you have any thoughts on it.

Other news:

We're developing an Android app at the moment, which like the iPhone app will be £2.99
We're also developing an upgrade of the iPhone app to suit the iPhone 4 - this will be available for download very soon.
Finally, we're also looking at improving the digimag service on the iPad, which at the moment isn't as good as it could be.

Any questions please do let me have 'em

Best wishes

Jim

PS If you missed that issue, drop me a private email through the website with your log-in details so I know it's you, and I'll send you one in the post foc.

why are you afraid of detracting from print sales? a sale is a sale, surely?

your digital distribution costs must be tiny by comparison. why not price it so that your net profit remains the same?

Guessing here but...

Part of the issue with digital sales is that they are still subject to VAT. VAT is only relieved on sales of 'printed matter' and digital versions are not covered by that. So depending on fixed publication costs before printing and distribution (but after server space and bandwidth...) there might not be a lot in it anyway.

Eventually, people will also start to expect more from their digital magazines - have you seen the new iGizmo iPad app? Just a basic tech review magazine which is overall pretty shallow on detail but very high on embedded video and interactivity. It's surprisingly fun to use for something which delivers so little valuable content. I might expect to eventually see the AutosportTV video's or podcasts etc added to the digital mag.

Yeah, but I bet their online ad income doesn't hold a candle to its print income. (For now :))

Still not keen on laying our £110+ all in one go, and don't mind paying a bit more either...

My digital subscription has now lapsed, the cost is just too high for a digital subscription and it's gone up from what I paid last year.

However, the reason for this post is why can't I access the magazines I paid for last year?
