There’s been some discussion in this thread about Autosport incorrectly describing Vitaly Petrov as Russia’s first F1 driver, as Prince Igor Troubetskoy holds this distinction. The first Russian Grand Prix driver would appear to have been ‘Sergey Dimitriewich’ who drove for Renault in the 1908 Grand Prix, finishing eighth.

‘Sergey Dimitriewich’ was apparently a pseudonym used by Count Alexander Vetchinin (or Vetchinine), a wealthy St Petersburg socialite. He also used the pseudonym 'Dimitri'. He was killed practising for an event near Moscow in June 1909. He has an entry in 'Motorsport Memorial':

Another race in Russia - 1909

Have I got all this right?

Is it correct to describe Igor Troubotsky as a Russian? His ancestry was certainly Russian but at the time he raced he would have held a passport from another country, probably France.

It's similar to Jean Alesi who is considered French rather than Sicilian or Italian.

Petrov is the first Russian F1 driver, though not the first Russian Grand Prix driver... (Formula One or F1 series was run first time in 1950) :)

That's also not 100% correct: There was also a Russian F1 championship in the 70s/80s. So he also isn't the first Russian F1 driver :drunk:

Although the Soviet F1 series was F1 by name only - I'm fairly certain it wasn't run to Formula One rules.

The rules and regulations were the same than in 'real' Formula 1 (except 1969-72) but the machinery, of course, wasn't the same

So let me get this straight, you can drive in a race called a Grand Prix and not be a Grand Prix driver and you can drive in an F1 race and not be an F1 driver.

So I guess this new bloke must be the first then. :drunk:

I heard that that's not true. Dimitriewich and Vetchinin must be different people. I read elsewhere that on pictures Dimitriewich looks older and fatter than Vetchinin.

According to this Russian site http://www.samouprav.../history_en.php , it is the same person. There are also other articles on Russian automotive (but not only) history. In Russian but a translating app did a decent job for me.

Wasn't he teamed up with the first Saudi driver, Sheikh It-Allaboutt?
