Yes, indeed.  Practice shot, although I am slightly confused by the number of spectators around Gerard's in the background for a practice session.  Was it that well attended?

Yet another thumping F5000 shunt...

Given how long ago it was, I am somewhat baffled as to how well I can remember it - strange what the mind retains for no apparent reason. I have vivid recollections of a beautiful sunny morning which was followed by a bitterly cold afternoon.  I started the day at the hairpin and, via a trip to the paddock, watched the racing from the outside of Gerard's.

Richard Scott had been sacked by McKechnie and his Durex sponsorhip  was "transferred" to the John Turner Lola T330 with black Durex letters applied - all very odd. The T400 was driven by Bob Evans, despite the constant rumours of it being down to be raced by Keijo Rosberg.  The car was still decked out in full Durex livery, however.

What I remember most though - apart from the afternoon cold -  was the difference in sound of the three V6 entries i.e. Jones (RAM March), Purley (Lec Chevron) and Walkinshaw (Hermetite March).

What did Leech hit or was there a component failure?

Who`s that in the background ?

Could it be Dennis Leech, Chevron B24 - 6th September 1975?

Leech crashed during the race.  Are you sure it's a practice shot?

Isn't the picture taken at Mallory Park?

Yes, but its Mallory Allen, isn't it? I used to stand under that tree when it rained, regularly... Its the October 12th 75 meeting I think, not Sept. My prog notes that Leech qualified last, and crashed on the warm-up lap -that explains the biggish crowd there.

Evans ran no. 1 as the champion, Scott no. 46 in Turner's car

The MN report on the 12th October event contains the following:

In all, 14 cars came to the grid, though the start was delayed while Dennis Leech's crashed Chevron was removed from the Stebbe Straight Armco, its rear suspension having broken on the warm-up lap.

Ah well, that will teach me to trust Alan Cox :)

When are they going to put a blue plaque on that tree Dan?

So let's try this instead: Mallory Park, 12 Oct 1975

This was the last time Leech's B24 was ever seen and I have speculated on my B24 page that it was wrecked and no longer exists.  Anyone recall how badly it was damaged?  Or anyone have a picture of the wreck?

I am quite perplexed by this.  I have absolutely no recollection of the crash and I watched the race from Gerard's. I give up.

Like Dan, I used to make occasional programme notes, so will check if I can find it.  All I remember is the cold and the closing laps - the race was hardly exciting.

Life is odd. Strange remembrances - not all the logical things. Where the hell was I on Monday?

And here we are discussing something from thirty eight years ago...

This is from a collection of historic New Zealand photos I'm currently uploading to The Roaring Season: www.theroaringseason.com

This is Sir Len Southward, in his beloved 1915 Stutz Indy 500 racer taking Ken Smith on his victory lap at Pukekohe. Smith had just won the 1976 New Zealand Grand Prix in his Lola T332. Len Southward has since passed away, although his Stutz sits in pride of place in the magnificent Southward Car Museum he created, just north of Wellington, in New Zealand. Ken Smith is still racing a Lola T332 in historic F5000!

Hi, I am producing a technical illustration of a 1974 Lola T332, similar to my others at www.race-car-technical-illustrations.co.uk . I have all I need except details of the wheels as no wheels without tyres available and the Lola archives closed for some time. Any help would be appreciated. Kind regards Roy
