Alright, David, help me out here. I really seem to recall their going to Australia and NZ in the late seventies; perhaps Australia only for F-5000?. I thought, without going back and trying to dig out the appropriate old magazine, that they were there one winter. Did they maybe take Atlantic (Pacific?) cars instead? What am I thinking about?

I said Australia and New Zealand because I figured that if I said Tasman, somebody would bark at me for that. I guess that I just cannot win.

Tom

We all lost when the Tasman came to an end...

You don't have to feel bad about it at all.

It embarrasses me to say, Tom, but I really don't remember. If they raced in FP in NZ, it would have been a bit later. And I have only a vague feeling they might have done the Australian F5000 races one season. Ray?

I can't check at the moment, David...

But I'm pretty sure you're right. One season in Australia only, it was '78 so there was no NZ races for them.

Could you be thinking 1978 Rothmans Series for the Tropicana F5000 cars?

Winter in the USA..... but Summer here "Down Under"......

Thanks for the link, Wirra. The 1978 Surfers Paradise results bring back memories of the colourful Tropicana Racing Team. I even recall that John Briggs was listed as John David Briggs to avoid confusion with Australian John Briggs who drove the ex-Jon Davison Matich in the same race.

If that was the reason on that occasion, why had he been listed John David Briggs in earlier American and European races? :)

I sit corrected, David.
Well, then it was lucky he had a penchant for using his middle name before he came to Australia as without it things may have gotten confusing for the race announcers :drunk: .

It seems that 78 had the biggest and best quality fields.
1979 would have been interesting but the results will not open.

'79 had a wider range of cars...

The McCormack McLaren should have been on-stream with its IMC heads. It was up in the leading bunch for a couple of laps at Sandown but then a cooling system problem surfaced. The Brabham was still around, IIRC (Bond driving?), but there were fewer imported cars.

The history of Don Breidenbach's T332 is not crystal clear. It apparently ran in the 1978 Tasman series until returning to the US. It was rebodied again for the CanAm series, at one stage rebodied and registered as a Frissbee. Eventually the chassis (now called Lola again) was destroyed in an accident which claimed the life of its driver Ray Allen. The chassis might be #HU50, very uncertain though.

Aha! I was not imagining it (sigh of relief!). The Briggs/Tropicana team DID rebody its son of Can Am T-333s back to T-332 spec and went down under. However, just to Australia.

Thanks to those above who dug out the info.

Yep, the unique BT43/1 was driven by Colin Bond (at Sandown Park by Kevin Bartlett).

BTW In 1979 the littleknown and rare 'Gardos' competed in the series, which was in fact a 'remodeled' Mac M18.

The only race appearance of the Chaparral Formula A car. It was disowned by Chaparral and run by their engine man, Franz Weiss. It did a flip on the main straight and was destroyed on the first lap (driver not hurt).

Thanks for the info, that's definitely him. The car looks a little odd because the shot was taken at the top of the uphill right hander and the cars were all at the top of their suspension travel. I think I still have the program somewhere, but haven't been able to find it.

Frans Weis also raced that unique Chapparal (with the famous 66 startnumber!) in the preceeding round at Brainerd.

I thought that is when the rot set in and it became run what ya brung. old F1 cars, RT1s with BDAs are not 5000s. In 78 there was entrys of over 20 5000s in 79 struggling for 15 Formula Libre

As early Surtees seem to be the order of the day, here's one not driven by a Mike. It's Trevor Taylor's works TS5A in bits it the paddock between heats having suffered terminal engine failure at Oulton Park in March, 1970.

Stan Redmond is bringing his newly restored T332cs ex Tropicanna/ Briggs F5000 to PI and the AGP at the end of the month.

It is in Tropicana livery

It ran yesterday, unfortunately in the rain. It sounds awesome with the new engine.

I just managed to find a 'gate' through search machine Altavista. No illegal stuff on purpose from my side, obviously the security doesn't work for the full 100%.

Hats off for all your fantastic work Allen, I am a very frequent visitor from far away Holland.

That's a lovely photo Giraffe - it rather sums up what was right with high level motor racing in the early 70s : Top driver, small team, very exciting but technically accessible (and loud) car, no fancy transporter/awning/motorhome compund, easy access for the paying public, mechanics in grubby overalls getting their hands oily and so forth. It's all very real and easy to relate to. It also highlights whats wrong with it today!
Even some fairly humble club racing teams can now seem more aloof than this.

I scanned this race program for the thread on the Trans Am championship, but it was a combined Trans Am/Formula 5000 weekend, so it fits in this thread also. You can read or download the program from this link:

Thanks Dale...

Of course this car never had those heads 'in period', nor was it intended to get them. But seeing as we don't have a McLaren M23 around anywhere it's a good thing that we can see them in use.

Oh, yeah, with the alloy engine the car was known as the 'ML6'.
