The 07/08 cars were real nice looking cars IMO. All sorts of appendages, such level of detail. Still, F1 needs to hark back to its pre-98 era of wide tracks/thinner tyres. I'm not a fan of these huge front wings, long cars and high rear wings, they're not bad, but F1 can do better than that.
I just always think to myself, F1 cars lost something from the beginning of the 98 season onwards

God why do they always insist on, modelling the early season car, the scale f60 looks so under developed and horrible compared to the final spec f60, which imo was a thing of beauty! I have Raikkonen's Spanish edition f2008 on my desk, got it not long ago, very impressed.
Yeah, that's why I didn't buy R29. That nose was/is hideous without that black skirt

Absolutely no clue where to start... what particular brands out there that are relatively affordable (i.e under $60)?

I've always wandered what these models are like in wind tunnels.

I buy minichamps models from here Diecast Ledgends It depends what scale you get (ie 1:43 around 50$ 1:18 around 100$ ) If you are getting it delivered to a US addres it will cost around 10$ shipping.

I would recommend them. They have excellent customer service. Most of my collection of 29 1/43 F1 cars came from them. My collection goes from Scheckter's '77 Wolf to a few from last ear.
Minichamps produce all the cars from each year in 1/43 except the Ferraris, and their models are of outstanding quality.

Type in Minichamps Formula 1 on the search and be amazed at the diversity of models offered from the current cars to the earlier legends.
I'm building up a collection with/for my 9 year old son.
Pride of place is his Jenson Button Honda RA107 Earthcar, he got to sit in the real thing at Silverstone 2008, have the framed picture with his ticket for Woodcote B.
Memories and memorabilia I hope he will treasure.
I have lots of info if anyone needs help!
Best Wishes to you all!!
2 weeks to Bahrain and the opener for 2010
Which will be this years must have models?

Minichamps models are much better than the freezerwheel versions!
But nowaday's only certain teams are made by certain brands.
The difference between a similair team car from Minichamps and freezerwheels is very easily to see.
McLaren was made by both and so was Jaguar F1, for a while, the difference was Huge and the price diffence was nought!

They make very expensive and incredibly accurate F1 handmade models at 1/8. They tend to cost a few grand each, which is why many people might not have heard of them.

You should all check out the Amalgam car models....They make very expensive and incredibly accurate F1 handmade models at 1/8.
Now, that is a 'proper' model maker - they are incredible
- Just shy of £3,000.00....

My current favourite though is this 1/18th MP4/2b made by Solido from France and part of it's Alain Prost collection. It's a super model and really captures the swoopy lines of the car well and the best bit is it was only £25 which for the detail in it is a real bargain compared to a Minichamps or Mattel!
Nice memories for me as well as I was 15 years old and at Brands Hatch (sitting at Clearways) for the European GP on the day that Alain won his first WC in this car.

And the wheels don't even go around. Something that I always tease him about. The workshop where they used to be made is just around the corner of my house.

Minichamps did have a go at bigger scale models which were very good value at issue.
They did do a Lotus Senna (portugese GP?) not so very long ago.
