Here's a few more electrical engineering-related papers on F1 (access, though, is only granted to IEEE members or through an university IP):

Formula 1 onboard camera shot detector using motion activity areas (2012)

Multi-modal extraction of highlights from TV Formula 1 programs (2002)

Time-frequency signal analysis of the acoustic emission of Formula 1 engines (1998)

There is a LOT more of content if you look up in Google - just do "formula 1" site:ieeexplore.ieee.org and you'll get over 20 results.

Rather ancient technology. I raced a most excellent solar car with this in 2007, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the race, in which it came second . Check out quarter elliptic for ancienter examples. Yawn.
