Alonso sees Schumacher as main threat

http://www.autosport...rt.php/id/88893

"There will be five world champions on the track and the most dangerous champion for me is always Michael," Alonso told reporters during Ferrari's winter retreat at Madonna di Campiglio on Thursday.

"Now in January if I have to choose one name I have to say Michael. He is seven-time champion, he has nothing to prove. He had a difficult season but he is still a champion.

"He is still super class and if the car is right he will be a contender," the Spaniard added.

Apparently losing the championship was a bigger blow to Alonso than one could imagine. :|

Ah, well, I wouldn't mind seeing an epic 3-way battle to the title between Schumacher, Alonso and Hamilton. That would be fun.

Dang .. I like Alonso's Zorro look !

MSC has to still deal with Nico but here's to a competitive MGP W02

Can't wait for Feb 1st. We are almost there.

Schumi needs to worry about Rosberg first.... I think Alonso's comments are just mindgames directed at his most obvious rivals, Vettel and Hamilton.

The way 2010 season went I'll be disappointed if i don't see a 6-way championship battle.

I just read it. It doesn't say anything different from what has already been published. MS struggled with using his front tires. Not because they were narrow but because the car itself lacked front end grip. He was as fast or faster than Nico in the fast corners but suffered with the balance in the slow ones. There is a common theme though. He hasn't lost his speed but perhaps his unique way of braking and accelerating didn't work well for him in this car. There is a short interview with Nico. Nothing special there either. It's the usual " We are on equal footing" " I hope for a better 2011" " I hate the name Britney" .. yada yada. How the hell does he look good in all the pics ? (Do not comment about a 'bromance')

The one thing that did catch my eye was a mention of how the MGP W02 has already exceeded the team's downforce level targets. Another member posted this in the W02 thread and I can confirm that the article says so.

I disagree, Rosberg spoke of how understeer is a big problem for him also and the only time that Nakajima was able to be quicker than him was when the car had excessive understeer, thats somehting i've not heard before

Schumi needs to worry about Rosberg first.... I think Alonso's comments are just mindgames directed at his most obvious rivals, Vettel and Hamilton.

He also mentions Massa has another potential rival

I believe this to be true. It is a personal opinion but I am of teh opinion that Schuey will look very good once again if the tyre/weight balance allows him to drive how he wants to.
Enough to win races- yes. Enough to win a championship again- I doubt it.

I haven't seen this man guy for quite a while; it would be enlightening to hear from him how Schumacher will suck this year as well due to his non-existing talent.

All this praise from Alonso, happy faces from Brawn etc etc is so disturbing :drunk: :)

Don't be confused. It's the old tradition of naming some outsiders as your main contenders to play mindgames with the real challengers. Teams and drivers do it all the time. So put the breaks on the circle-jerk at least until Schummi wins a race.

The most impressive thing is that by the end of the season Michael will be older than Jacques Laffite in Brands Hatch 1986 and Mario Andretti in Las Vegas 1982. In my reckoning he will be the oldest driver after Graham Hill, who was 46 in 1975, when he retired from racing.

Graham Hill at that age was long overdue to retire from racing, he could not qualify for his last two Monaco GPs, although Monaco was always the crown jewel in GrahamĀ“s career, having won it five times.

Let us hope that MichaelĀ“s fate in his 40s will be more benevolent.

Yeah, let's ignore the facts of him not driving competitive machinery in the last three years and the other fact that he was 7th in his second to last Monaco GP. :rotfl:  :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I think he will be not the only one driver who will say MS is his biggest threat. Or he expect Ferrari and MGP to have equal strong cars.

Lets get real Schumi never did anything special in the Mercedes, it wasnt that big a donkey, Kubica for instance in the Renault stood out much more than him in a comparable car, then there's Rosberg to consider who was consistently quicker than him. For Schumi to be a threat he needs the best car because in the present field of drivers he can hold his own but not much more, even in that case the driver to be feared would more than likely be Rosberg.

Exactly.. he dismisses Hamilton and Vettel who are his main rivals. as much as I'd love to see Schumi grab another WDC I don't think the car or team are currently up to it. so yes, mind games by alonso.

I even believe that Mercedes payed Alonse to say that stuff, ... to make Schumacher feel more confident, or at least some of his fans, that he is "still in the game" so to speak, after such an non-excistent 2010 season for slow-Schumacher.

:rotfl: hahahahaha :rotfl: dude, get a grip on yourself! He mentioned hamilton indirect and also claimed mclaren would be strong. Perhaps if you didnt have your head sofar up hammys backside you wouldv noticed this.

Alonso has raced Schumacher more and harder than the others so perhaps he oughta know who is the main threat and who not. For the record, Schumacher is a 7 times world champ 90+ race win driver. Hammy is a one time champ with a few wins. Get some perspective.

There's a huge amount of respect between Schumacher and Alonso. They've raced competitively against each other since 2003 and know the strengths of each other. Alonso knows what a formidable opponent Schumacher is/was and doesn't take him lightly.

There are many quotes from Alonso about Schumacher

"For me, the championship has more value when racing with Schumacher"

"I am not among those to criticise Schumacher, I know how good he is"

"He is a 7 time champion, he is special"

"He is one of the best of all time"

Perhaps he does genuinely see Schumacher as a threat.

Actually, Alonso was right, Schumacher is the most dangerous. Almost killed Barrichello. Will crash on purpose when feels so.

That was 6 years ago and Schumi has just turned 42, i hailed his return but he's not winning any more WDC's judging by last years performance

I'm not sure why this has caused such a flutter around here, hadn't paid any attention to it until I read about it on Allen's blog. I think everybody's used to the meaningless stuff that gets said pre-season,and in Alonso's case we've had random remarks such as the Renault prediction from 2009.

It was Alonso,it happened at a Ferrari event, and it concerned a man that many still consider to be part of the Ferrari family: Schumacher. Enough said.

Thanks for the links, Ivan.

Forgive me to say it, but Michael is indeed getting old. He would have pulverized the competition in earlier days, his driving in Kerpen was modest, to say the least. Contrast that with Fernando Alonso ice carting in Madonna di Campiglio.

Shame is they didn't invite Michael to carting with Alonso there, we to see who is better on carting. I wouldn't go to much into results from Madonna di Campiglio races. They were not serious. About Michael carting, what I see he didn't finish the race, don't know what was the reason(accident or cart problem). But, still this is fun for him.
