I flat out refuse to believe Jock Clear as Michael's engineer. If it were true then Ross Brawn is the greatest negotiator in history..

According to Croftyf1 (BBC F1 Commentator)

CroftyF1: Now Jock is the assistant engineer. Peter Bonnington steps up to become Michael's race engineer

Would be most strange for Jock to go from his promoted role overarching race engineering to an assistant race engineer. We have clearly not got the story here at all.

Oh I see! So he has been promoted! But what happened to Mark Slade is a question the journalists should ask the Mercedes team!

maxinefilby: Feeling very nervous for Bono this weekend, his first race as Senior Race Engineer #F1 Fingers crossed they do ok!

Maybe Bonnigton was promoted and he just needed some help for this weekend. Hence Jock.

But why the engineer change?

Since he isn't with Willy anymore, things aren't running to well for him eh ?...

Now today at Spa, he has done a "Jos Verstappen" (P1 on a Friday with a lesser car than the rest)....

That's all he is going to get.

Well, that is what we thought, but I have read no official comments about that from anybody. MS usually bonded with his race engineers, that might be one of his problems. He must be demanding in that area.

Why this have to happen on this race? Maybe bigger team get Slade? But, it is not probably. Lets hope Bono and Clear did a good job.

New engineer, instantly 15s faster than the field. Knew it wasn't Michael that was the problem. He is back to his old self, like the way he used to haul in championships in those inferior Ferraris (2002, 2004)! :smoking:

Inferior doesn't even cover those. Those cars supposedly were only able to drive backwards until Schu drove them.

Michael Schumacher gets new race engineer at Mercedes

Michael Schumacher's race engineer at Mercedes has changed, with his former assistant race engineer Peter Bonnington taking over the role from Mark Slade.

Slade was formerly Kimi Raikkonen's race engineer at McLaren, and was recruited from Renault, where he worked with Vitaly Petrov, for this season. He has taken up what a team spokesperson described as "a factory-based role within race engineering" because he has "decided to stop travelling".

Bonnington assumes the role with immediate effect having worked with Schumacher since the seven-time world champion came back to Formula 1 at the start of last year.

Jock Clear, who was Nico Rosberg's race engineer last year and for the first three races of of this season before new recruit Tony Ross joined from Williams, has stepped in as Schumacher's performance engineer for the final eight races of the season while a permanent replacement is found.

The team said that the move had been made with immediate effect in order for Bonnington and Schumacher to develop their relationship ahead of the 2012 season.

http://www.autosport...rt.php/id/93956
Sounds fishy to me. Did they know that Slade decided to stop traveling in 2011 ,when they hire him?? I just know that MS have two assistant engineers right now. This is the biggest joke I read today.

I'm certain Clear is professional enough not to allow bad blood, if it is still circulating, to deter him from his duties and he'll also want to make it as easy & comfortable for Bonnington as possible.

It's a shame that Slade decided to resign from his role because he possessed bundles of experience, working with Mika & Kimi, and the relationship between him and Schumi seemed to be good. Also despite the history between Jock & Schumacher, I am in fact quite happy that Clear is carrying on until the end of the season. His experience of working with exceptional drivers, Barrichello & Villeneuve, will come good when working with the meticulous nature of Michael.

Jock is a hugely experienced and talented race engineer though. It would look AMAZING on his CV if Michael scored success with him on the car.

I suppose Stepney proved that sometimes bitterness can overcome professionalism, but I tend to think better of these guys. Achieving Schumies first win since his comeback would be really special for all of them and actually we really don't know how well Clear and he get on these days at all.

I am suprised. Very suprised. J. Clear should be by now working for some other outfit, like Virgin or whomever, but IMO he should not be anywhere close to Schumacher, or to his car.

Jock said last year he is professional enough to have a working relationship with Schumacher. He may dislike Michael, but I doubt he'll act like a kid and be uncooperative as that'll just damage his reputation.

Perhaps not, but in this job one would expect that a person goes over and beyond what's expected. Is he? Perhaps he is, but I am a believer on chemistry and that aspect for people on the outside is not so clear, and I would not expect insiders to say "it's no good".

Exactly. All eyes will be on him this weekend. If he can't be professional, he is finished at Mercedes, within F1 and his reputation will suffer massively.

That aside, I think they've buried the hatchet and are professional about things. Let's also be honest, there's more chance of Clear being booted out of the team than Schumacher and everyone knows this.

I'm just not impressed with the Mercedes' team. I mean they didn't come with any upgrade in SPA. They shouldn't have a break, they should work hard, they should put some effort for Michael, ti give him some sort of a present for his anniversary. I mean I know the factory had to be closed for two weeks but for sure that's not the only place where they can come together. In the interview after the Hungarian GP, Michael said that it's a shame that the factory has to be closed as he wanted to work on the car. But Brawn wants to rest for 2 weeks? I mean, if you live in a sport, if you're a professional, you know what to do, you need to work hard and denial to things you like, if you want to succeed. It's simple...I know there are limits, you need to have a break, you need to turn yourself off. But not 2 weeks in a row, that's not what you do in sports...If you're in sport seriously and professionally you have the schedule over the week and you probably take 1 day off in the week. And I'm sure they have 1 day off in a whole week. I know there are ups and downs in your career, every sport is a game of inches and so it is in life too and you need to fight for every inch. Sometimes the score tables aren't that important if you look at the other side, the most important is that you give everything you got and that you fight and so you can win it for yourself. But I'm not seeing Mercedes giving everything they got, I'm not seeing them to fight for every inch.

Dissapointing. Well, thats motor racing.

Lets see what Michael can do in the race tomorrow, if he can have a clean first couple of laps I'm hoping we can see him race towards the points. It should still be fun to watch.

Not the 20th anniversary we were hoping for though. Any chance this threads resident trolls can give it a rest on this one?
