Looking at Q1 and the difference between MSC and ROS, there was never going to be any point in sending Michael out in Q3. Good decision, tyres saved for the race. A good start should see them have a quiet race to 7th and 8th, safety cars permitting.

I really hope not, just look at Rosberg's start from Monza

he is 0.2 slower over a lap than massa and has 2 new super softs.
6 is achievable

1:46.043 for Michael in Q2. 1:46.013 for Nico in Q3.
Michael had a chance today to beat him. Now he starts on the dirty side, I don't know, I don't think he'll make a good start, the straight line is a bit to short i think...

he set a time throught the pitlane

No I'm pretty sure that's not it, as they all didn't set a time it goes on their Q2 times for those three drivers I believe and as he was faster in Q2 he starts 8th ahead of them.
Also as he didn't set a time I believe that also gives him freedom of tire choice i.e. not limited to those he was in parc ferme on as he aborted his lap.

but he has a better set of tyres in the first stint. This should allow him to go 2 laps longer than nico in case he can't get a better start

Does not matter as he didn't set a time. He can choose what tyres to start on.

if the super softs are really that bad on the first stint (last 10 laps) he can gamble on a short first stint on the harder tyre then pit and and have 2 brand new sets of super softs waiting

he was P8 in Monza as well, making up 4 places to exit turn 1 in P4
OTOH the main straight is really short here, so gaining 1 or 2 positions after the 1st corner would be great !

Didn't Michael went out of the pits? And then just went back in? Where you got info that michael didn't go out?

That would be pretty hard as the first corner isn't that slow, it's not much of heavy breaking there which would allow to gain places

I think MS made a mistake in not running. He could have qualified ahead of Nico and maybe even Massa. Track position is crucial here and he cannot make up too many places from the dirty side of the grid as the run down to first corner is not too far. Now he has two new sets of SS right? So maybe start on softs?

Can anyone let me know if MS has two sets of new SS left and Nico just one? Everywhere I read, it says one set for both.

MS - Two sets of 'fresh' super softs. One was not used and the other one was used on his outlap before the red flag and again on his outlap in Q3, so that set is almost fresh.

I think not setting a time is a good move. They will wait for tomorrow to see the weather forecast. If rain is expected, he will start on supersoft. If forecast is for dry conditions, he will start on the harder tyre (the soft) as safety car is highly possible.

New team around him, it seems to be working. Lets hope for a good race.

No use wasting a set of options for a possible 1 place gain on the grid, that he has a good chance of making good at the start anyway.

Schumacher knows what it takes. At the top of page 338 on this thread there is an article from 1998 make reference to such commitment, from jogging on the Fiorano circuit at midnight on his own to late night meetings etc.

I also once read of Schumacher picking up pizzas late at night in his Ferrari 456 GT for him and his engineers to prove his commitment to the team.

If he was the default no.1 driver it is because he worked his bollocks off. Aside from Prost and Senna, nobody has ever been as commited as Schumacher. Its so sad that people have forgotten this and just point to 1994 and 1997 finales. To be in F1 for 20 years and at the top of your game is seriously impressive.

These kind of statements 1 year / 6 months ago had no merit but it has changed and I believe NR is increasely feeling pressure from MS on the track but also from MS commitment within the team.

Sigh. On the BBC Martin Brundle just said Lewis Hamilton fans will be asking why has Lewis been penalised when Michael got away with what he got away with at Monza.

Let it go BBC chaps, let it go...

Nice overtake from Schumi, but he's lost 10 seconds to Nico. He's in big trouble with the Findias now. Bah.

Agreed, its looking very good, he's taken 6 seconds out of Nico in about 3 laps! I wonder if Nico lost a bit of speed when he lost those bits of underfloor on the turn 10 kerbing?

Anyway, nice pace from Michael now  Such a shame he got dumped into all that traffic on lap 11.
