"Basically to understand the new tyres," he said of the point of the test. "To get the basics right, we can obviously do cambers, pressures, and you can understand the tyres. Yes ideally you have the new car, but ideally you want to keep the new car in the windtunnel as long as possible.

"So it is this compromise, or this strategy in order to perform the best and we chose a different way than the others. Let's say how it pays out."

The German was happy with how the new rear tyres performed, and said they were more fun than last year's rubber.

"The rear end tyre is certainly better, a real comparison is not possible because we only had new tyres on. They are definitely more consistent and more fun to drive."

I know its only testing but when I saw the gap was 0.5s I just thought - thats a familar amount...

But they were a second faster than Button so they will obviously fight for 2nd and 3rd behind the obvious winner after todays times - Kimi.

Or, test times mean shit ..... :lol:


After watching Kimi go around - - I am now more confident for MS's 2012, Kimi's handling of the EBD'less car (and whatever other changes the new aero's have offered besides the new tyres) was more like older style driving and very nice to clearly hear throttle on and throttle off again ...

... looks like more old style driver effort involved rather than driver's and mapping EBD management and that's a good thing for everybody in my books regardless of who comes out on top.

After watching Kimi go around - - I am now more confident for MS's 2012, Kimi's handling of the EBD'less car (and whatever other changes the new aero's have offered besides the new tyres) was more like older style driving and very nice to clearly hear throttle on and throttle off again ...

... looks like more old style driver effort involved rather than driver's and mapping EBD management and that's a good thing for everybody in my books regardless of who comes out on top.

Same here. I saw the gap and thought damn! :well:
But since this is 2011 car with that diffuser I'm temporary optimistic :D

this particular test in not that irrelevant as most others. They drove the same car on the same day and both were doing equal tests which is getting to know the new tires. Of course, the track changes from morning to afternoon and etc but still I'm kind of worried that nothing will change regarding gaps.

Don't worry, it's his strategy - he was on race set-up and saving tyres. Or something ;).

I never over used that "excuse". That might play a role in the gap but still, I think, most of it is coming of Michael's lost of speed.

Yes lets make the most of it. We have 2-3 weeks before we see if Mercedes is sill the 4th quickest team.

It's probably been mentioned elsewhere but I can't see it, what exhaust & diffuser is the Mercedes running this week? Is it a 2011 EBD or is it a 2011 car but with a 2012 exhaust similar to that which was run at the young driver test at the end of last year.

Last years car with the EBD. If the new car is reasonable it should generate similar levels of grip.

Grip* is only a small part of it, it's the whole car's characteristics that Shumacher is hoping will be different - as I said, I'm hopeful after watching Kimi blast around.

*of course a high grip car with bad character is always preferable to a slow car with good ones ...

Team used 2011 car , but no off throttle blowing I think. They used 2012 engine map maybe.
Also Nico 1:21.170 and 1:20.219 stints were with soft tyres(according Autosport live). MS, 1:20.794 also soft tyres.

09:57 Rosberg is using soft tyres for this run.
09:59 Rosberg improves his time to 1m21.170s but remains 1.5s down on Raikkonen.
10:23 Rosberg sets out again on what appear to be fresh Pirellis.
10:24 Rosberg improves to a 1m20.219s, which puts him just 0.5s behind Raikkonen.
10:27 Rosberg goes by with a 1m21.133s, making good use of his new soft tyres.

AMuS:
15:33 With soft tires can improve Schumacher: 1:20.794 min, the three other cars with the silver colored medium-rubber on the road.

wow we really really have some muppets in here. I'm sure they will be able to tell us exactly what each driver's program was and how they must have beebn exactly the same to make any comparison about TESTING TIMES....

I think that's true. Iirc they have Jerez data from the W02 before with the 2011 tyres so running without EBD would harm them. A little testing without the EBD to get the feeling back for both drivers will remain an option, although the real testing without EBD will probably be done as soon as the W03 rolls out, combined with the data about the tyres they are now learning about.

I mean they can't compare with last year tests, they used completely different exhaust back then(middle side exhaust). Now on the car they have the last exhaust they have from the end of the year. Somebody say that no car is doing off throttle sounds, and this is why I thought they don't blow off throttle. They blow diffuser ,but not off throttle. Maybe.

But they have loads of data about the 2011 tyres on similar surfaces and tracks as this one, the second best thing to running the 2012 tyres on a 2012 car is running the 2012 tyres on a known configuration. That way the difference between the tyres is more predictable, IMHO, and they can extrapolate more precise data for the sim, I assume.

edit: On further thoughts, if they would not want to use the EBD, they could simply revert to the Abu Dhabi periscope configuration, but they haven't.

According to Auto Motor Und Sport Schumi's first 1:18.622 lap was on the soft tyres and and the even faster lap of 1:18.561 was on hard compound tyres.

Google translate:

71 laps in the morning. Very good. Times are encouraging too, but still, I want to see new car doing lap after lap without a problem.

According to Auto Motor Und Sport Schumi's first 1:18.622 lap was on the soft tyres and and the even faster lap of 1:18.561


And just to keep balance I will stick with those super fast times still having no foundation in testing - we have no idea what they are testing, they may be illegal parts or parameters and being tested for clarification.

As usual you allow your bias to impinge on your ability to be constructive & logical.

Nice set of assumptions there.

As already pointed out, it's testing and very little counts. Even less so for the MERC as it's effectively last year's car on this years tyres. But still you appear with your agenda.
