I think he did well enough, despite the big gap to Nico - constant improvements throughout Q and just a nick behind Hamilton.

It's hard to compete with such a perfect lap and, if I'm not mistaken, this is Michael's best starting position in China.

This is Michael's worst track, in terms of record, and probably Nico's best. He really flies here.

He will still finish ahead of Nico though.Hopefully hopefully in a good points scoring position.

Hrmmm. Pretty good qualifying from Michael, and his first front row start of his comeback. All very exciting!!

But but but... Nico just destroyed him everyone there, didn't he?

Still, it was an incredible lap from Nico, he'll struggle to do a whole race of those tomorrow. It will be interesting to see if Mercedes can pull away or get swallowed up when they can't use DRS on the long straights.

Corrected.;) Nico seemed like he was in a class of his own on that lap. Schumacher marginally behind Hamilton with the rest of them also just a little bit behind, Nico's lap was stunningly fast to be that far ahead of everybody else.

Its true, Michaels time compared to Lewis' was pretty good, and Michael has been within around 0.1s of Nico all weekend and sometimes quicker.

I'm very curious to see if they have similar race pace tomorrow, Nico said he made some setup changes before Q3, if they've gone different ways on set up only one of them will work in the race!

Nothing to be ashamed of for Michael. Yes he's 0.5s behind, but that's the very first time it happened this season in qualifying, be it Q1, Q2 or Q3, he was always at worst just a tenth slower than Rosberg, and here it was the same right up to Q2. It was just a phenomenal effort from Rosberg, which you've got to respect and admire, but it's not like Schumacher's been underperforming and struggling massively like he did last year in quali, it was just a massive effort from Rosberg, and in pretty special conditions, Rosberg being the only one to really improve his time from Q2 while the track tempature was dropping.

Let's hope for a good race this time. :drunk:

The difference of NR time to Michael and Lewis makes me think about different setups and race strategies. We'll see tomorrow.

Well done, Michael! Starting on the front row would at the very least mean it could be a good first few minutes of the race tomorrow (unless someone manages to ram into him from behind again, that is) Schumacher leading into the first corner of a race with his teammate behind him for the first time in years -what I wouldn't give to see that. Just hope he gets a good start, though.

Start will be interesting, and we will see if Nico will concentrate on blocking Michael, and let Kamui and Kimi to take advantage of it, or vice versa, he gets busy with charging Kimi, and Michael gets through. (Assuming they all will start in their usual manner). Nico is under stress due to his first pole position, but perhaps that will not be a huge detriment. It's all such novelty again, strange faces at the pointy arrow, but two "older" gentlemen. :)

It's going to be a great race tomorrow and no doubt Schumi has his best shot at winning a race since his return to F1.
Whether either Merc wins will come down to whether Kamui and Kimi hold up the McLarens. If the McLarens get the jump on those two at the start then I wont hold out much hope for a win for either Rosberg or our beloved Schumi as the McLaren has race pace.

Ideally the McLarens will get held up and Michael will be ruthless and take Nico at the start or the first corner and it will be a cruise to the finish Michael! :)

Given he was never going to beat Nico's great lap, second is literally as good as it can get.

For all the Nico fans, we might be in a good position to compare his racecraft and skill to MS, BUT IF ONLY, I reiterate IF ONLY, both of them doesn't involve in an accident with another driver or between themselves.

Having said that I can already see MS zoom past Nico on turn one. The whole grid will reorder themselves on turn 1 for sure.

BTW: there is Kamui very close to both with his hysterics so Merc drivers watch out!

If he makes a good start, then even with a bad car he'll be able to finish high up. I think this is his chance.

I don't see him winning, sadly, but P3 is definitely in his grasp at least.

I'll be laughing so hard if he outperforms Nico again though.

I think he'll try to be careful, in his interview with either Sky or the BBC he said that he just wants to score a good amount of points so I think he'll be a tad cautious, I hope he'll be a tad cautious.

Not to indulge in stereotypes, bigotry etc., but thats like hoping for a cautious Kamikaze pilot. I like Kamui but that's because he rarely races against drivers I really support. :D

In the first part of his career, it would have been strange/bad to see Schumacher half a second behind his teammate. It still is now to be honest, but nevertheless a decent lap by Michael. I think he will be better tomorrow, his racecraft is good compared to Rosberg.

Rosberg will start for the first time from pole position so he may end to having to defend, instead of attacking which he used to do. That I believe could open a door for Schumacher to sneak into first place at Turn 1. Rosberg will be quite busy watching over fast starting Raikkonen, which may give a chance to Koba and Schumacher to attack.

One of you can give me a link with the time per lap of the FP3? The PDF on FIA's website link is broken. Brawn has said that they have been testing high fuel runnings and I would like to see them. Thank you!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think Schumacher's ever had a collision with his own team-mate, has he?

Really good qualifying by Schumacher. Outshone by Rosberg, but 2nd place on the grid is very good, and as always the points come on Sunday, not Saturday. Let's hope the tyres hold up and that Mercedes' degradation does not haunt both Schumi and Rosberg.

Maybe MS decided to stick with his setup, thinking about the race. It will be lottery tomorrow, who knows what is wrong and what is right? Also team maybe want to widen their tyre window. One of them will be more luckier.
Or it was Nico and his engineer decision to change something, don't know if they need permission to do it. We don't know what exactly happen.

Only time that comes to mind is Abu Dhabi 2010, when Rosberg and Schuey tangled ever so slightly, causing the latter to spin and Liuzzi to run into him.

Nervous for tomorrow. I know i will probs be disappointed as usual ( going off past results) come the end of the race. However having Schumacher start on the front row for the first time in nearly 6 years makes me very happy.

I dont think qualifying nearly 6 tenths slower than your teammate can be considered really good qualifying, its a chasm in F1 terms

I am really anxious too. I don't think i will be able to sleep much actually. I really want Schumy to have a proper trouble-free for starters. He deserves at least that his start of the season has been as good as possible. Also, when we see him up there we expect him to win it we are still used to those days and let's not write them off for tomorrow, although the tyre behaviour probably needs a lot more work. I really hope the W03 delivers in terms of race pace sooner or later, if Schumy becomes a regular podium contender it will feel like a time travel. Tonight i feel i am once again the kid waiting for Schumy to go out tomorrow and show them who is the best. I know lots of things are different, i am not daydreaming but this romantic feeling is really one of the most beautiful essences of being a fan of a legend who comes back from retirement.

Same here, I've followed F1 rabidly since 1997 but having MSC on the front row brings back memories of waking up as a middle schooler in the late 90s at 7 am hoping to see him take the fight to Mclaren. It's like a time machine to my childhood!

If McLaren doesn't win I want Michael or Kimi to take it. More so Kimi for the simple fact that he drove for McLaren, and Schumacher broke my heart many a time lol, it would be good to see either of them win it though, but still, it would be alot better for a McLaren driver to come through with the goods.

@monaco, 2000 still stings!

I think if we had Sunday warm up session, then MS could go for qualifying without having to worry about race set up too much.

And generallly I think qualifying needs to be kept separate from the race, but because you can't touch the car after qualifying, these cars are not really being pushed by everyone the same way on qualifying day, unless you have a car that can do everything reasonable well, but not everyone has that.

I kinda wish the FIA gave Sunday warm up another life again, we don't need to create more lottery, we need less of it because we have fast drivers and teams.
